Sony should make more commercials making fun of Nigeria until then.
- Smokeydabear, on 10/28/2009, -1/+13There was a good thing on NPR or This American Life about a group of guys who track down the scammers and end up ***** their lives up. I don't remember exactly how they got in contact with the guys but they would have them meeting in certain places forcing the scammers to stay in areas for months at a time thinking they were going to get some cash or something. It was pretty neat.
- jejones, on 10/28/2009, -0/+12It goes back well before the Internet. Back when I was a more serious SWLer, I'd see warnings in _Passport to World Band Radio_ that if I sent a QSL request to a Nigerian station, I'd be likely to receive mail from scammers. Email just makes it easier and cheaper to target everyone, not just people who put their return address on an envelope they want to get back with a QSL card.

http://www.419eater.com/html/joyce_ozioma.htm - mksmothers, on 10/28/2009, -0/+10Most emails are web-based and originate from internet cafes. Nigeria, like most African countries is a pitt of corruption and incompetence.
- kingmanic, on 10/28/2009, -0/+9I don't think we'd be missing much if we simply sealed off the Nigerian network from the rest of the world. I think it would be a net economic gain.
- Rogor, on 10/28/2009, -0/+9Its not just Nigerians in Nigeria doing this, much of it is done by Nigerians in London, Spain, France, Amsterdam, Thailand, Malaysia and the US. Talk about having a global monopoly on crime, Its very rare to hear about anyone involved in the crime who isnt originally from Nigeria.
- kingmanic, on 10/28/2009, -0/+7I don't think going to their home turf is a wise move. You may be better just wasting their time as a lot of other people like to do.

- borez, on 10/28/2009, -1/+8I have no idea what the guy in that song was saying. I heard 419 in there somewhere, but the rest was just complete gobbledygook.
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 10/28/2009, -1/+7If all is fair in love and war, then there certainly shouldn't be any problem if I decide to go to Nigeria and kill a few scammers.
- richi, on 10/28/2009, -1/+6Talk about irony: a spammy comment to an article about spammers...
- Rogor, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5I remember everyone in our suburb got a paper letter version of the scam from Nigeria almost 30 years ago.
- richi, on 10/28/2009, -0/+5Yep, seems deeply ingrained in the culture. Although, as Amir says, we shouldn't tar all Nigerians with the same brush ;-)
- Th3Wh1teRabb1t, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4I wonder if one of the spammers that have shown up on digg comments in the last while will show up here and post. That would be classic.
- yavor01126, on 10/28/2009, -0/+4I think kingmanic has a point! +1
- UselessTrivia, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3Wasn't the biggest of the "nigerian email scam" rings busted up when they arrested some dudes in Texas?

- inactive, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3I wish Fela Kuti was still alive to make a song about this. :(
- Rogor, on 10/28/2009, -0/+3Great story about Nigerians operating out of London, its worth noting at the end of the scambait the Nigerians organized a DDOS attack which took down the pranksters website, these guys arent as foolish as the photos of them on 419eater appear to be.
- Rogor, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Yep, people dont realise the scams have migrated to the all over the West with the African immigration exodus, in Asia they are relatively confined to Thailand which is interconnected with their heroin smuggling which is tied up with the same groups of people.
- debaser7673, on 10/28/2009, -1/+3great another diseas from africa
- apharmds, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2This one's great. The guy actually convinces the Nigerian that he is a sentient robot head. http://forum.419eater.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17 ...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QSL - executex, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Yes, if they made laws forcing internet cafe owners to have government approved software that keeps track of all the computers and knowing what they do, and the government being able to trace these emails, would be easy enough to catch them in the act. Or even if that's too hard, aggressive advertising claiming the government will go after these people would help.
