Everyone in the truck..... - Redlobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I consider it Microsoft's fault for not giving me a secure OS and for crap like rootkits and trojans and viruses and worms and spyware and EULA agreements, DRM, Windows Media Player, Macro viruses, etc. Although, kudos to Bill Gates for giving money for Disease charity.
- Zeuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm going to paste a nice sticker on the window at the local Sony store that points to the article, DIGG and a small blurb for everyone to see.
Most consumers are ignorant about these things, time to educate and warn the public.
What's also fascinating with this is the exploitation of Windows flaws. I wonder what would happen if this disc was played on any other OS? - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4http://digg.com/music/DRM_Crippled_CD:_A_bizarre_tale_in_4_parts
Sony is really in the new right now for F*cking up their customers! - bacon_skoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Sony can pull this on a CD, think what they can do with Blu-ray...they'll own your ass!!!
And report it throught the broadband connection too.
This now replaces that story about the wicked queen giving snow white the red apple. - forumgirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is entirely ethically appropriate, and perhaps even morally imperative, for this CD to be actively and aggressively distributed via P2P networks.
This should be done solely as a means of depriving the band and the label of revenue - not because of any overarching "information-wants-to-be-free" protest, but because organizations who engage in this sort of customer hostility should be bankrupted.
Yes, the band as well, and even if they "didn't know it was happening. Honest!" I'm tired of bands/sublabels feigning ignorance when confronted with public outcry over DRM situations like this. If they weren't such whores to begin with, they never would have ended up signing with a label who clearly is out to manipulate and deceive the record-buying public.
All of them should pay. And they should pay through failure. - theGrue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is why I love how Exact Audio Copy disables AutoPlay when it runs. Start EAC first -> No AutoPlay -> No malicious software installs. Computer is happy. :)
- Manneroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First I read how sony is pissing off iTunes, http://digg.com/music/DRM_Crippled_CD:_A_bizarre_tale_in_4_parts, and now this???
- underburn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Excuse the languange... But I ***** hate you sony.
- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, just wow. I do belive its time to boycott Sony products in general. I don't think I'll buy any sony related products weither it be ps2/games, PS3, camreas, software, songs etc.
- tachyon2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I checked the EULA and saw no mention of the fact that I was agreeing to have software put on my system that I couldn't uninstall."
- gab00n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Screw sony, i'll never buy anything from them if they use such cheap tactics.
- jpturner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Time for us all to start reading the EULA - this is very bad news, I hope this blows-up in Sony's face. Most people I know love Media Player, iTunes, Napster and Rhapsody - little do they realize that the EULA agreement limits what they can do with the music they pay for - or should I say pay and pay and pay for.
- PHPGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No more Sony products for me... This guy did a great service. Not only did it take a great deal of skill to figure out all this, but he took the time to list repeatable, provable steps for showing what Sony is doing. Very nice.
- ELWOOD_BLUES, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is lot legal. Is somebody going to sue? Do it and call the news people. They will eat it up!!!
Class action now!!!
Attica! Attica! - spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this is against the law. Somebody get the EFF! where's my lawyer?
- J_Omega, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow. just, wow.
Isn't this against the law??
Buy the CD, install on a PC you don't care about, sue. - TimmyK., on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't see how they can legally do this without letting you know exactly what they are installing on your PC, and giving you the ability to remove it whenever you want. I think there should be a huge class action against Sony, and everyone else who would do this. So in order to "protect" their copyrights they think they have the right to damage your property? Since when do they have the right to put anything accept the music files from the CD on your PC?

Have fun. - MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The funny thing is, if you pirate these CDs you get more than if you pay for them.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great article.
This guy obviously knows what he is doing so I am curious to why he even let the music player software on the CD run. - Ribald_Jester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully actions like this will put Sony (and other "media" companies) out of business. I for one will avoid Sony products from now on, and I will pass this information along to all my friends.
- jOOs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone digg this this needs to be known by everyone
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's get some more diggs on this one and the other DRM story. I want to see these on Diggnation! Let's get the word out!
- NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It was explicity said in the product what was being installed. But they never mentioned that it could not be removed or it would be cloaked so ouch.
- HyperHacker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't seem to digg this. It says an unknown error occurred.
[edit] Looks like it went through anyway. O_o - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm glad I found this. Sony has gone WAY too far.
To answer some questions raised above:
Yes, this is illegal. A software vendor cannot alter a computer without the agreement of the user. They are supposed to explicitly say what is being installed. If Sony was going to install a program that
1) Could not be removed
2) Cloaked itself from the OS
they had to explcitly say so. They did not say ANYTHING like this in the EULA.
Expect things like this to get much worse with BluRay. If ANYBODY buys a BluRay, and even worse installs a BluRay on their computer after reading this you are either criminally stupid or are completely insane. - Live4Soccer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not shocked at all...it was just a matter of time before the Record Companies started this garbage....Another temporary stop gap measure to try to hang on to their dying business model....
Three Cheers to Sysinternals for this find!!!
Digg+ - ConradB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony = Jerk Boys.
Take 'em down and put 'em out .. time to say bye bye.
If you're a Sony Artist, or distributed Movie - you all suck. Bunch of losers! - corebreach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Come on people, digg this if you haven't already. This is a problem that needs to be brought to the attention of the tech masses!
- kirakun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Major Grrrrrr.... dood.
- derbykid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am glad that i have been stealing music for years so i am safe. IF they are trying to get us to buy music then they are doing a "great job" :-)
- islandkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem is not with sony. Many companies will gladly take advantage of these vulnerabilities. The problem is with the security of the OS you are using. An OS should not allow software to be installed that you have not authorized to be installed. Primarily, no OS should give software access to write to important system configuration files and especially not allow any software to patch system files! That is completely obsured! What has driven you to run such an insecure OS! I would advise you to research your options, as there are many stable and secure OS's out there.
- Serendipity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My trust level for Sony is now zero--nada!
- antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.digg.com/security/SONY_ROOT-KIT_-_REMOVAL_INSTRUCTIONS
Some instcutions I've compiled from the email I got back from Sony when I wanted help removeing the DRM (I don't really have it, just wanted to see how they'd respond) - and red tape you have to go through is thick. - Stark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it will be interesting to see how this factors into the blue-ray and 3rd gen console development. I'm sure MS and Hitachi will use this news to their advantage.
- Netweb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's OUR computer Sony
WE LET YOU play your audio products on our machine
You tried a 'rootkit' on US
Now Sony will get our ROOTKIT
No sales Sony = Bankrupt Sony - ManiacFive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0blu ray is going to be unbearable. DRM'D up to the ass and dialing home at every oppourtunity.
Sony are losing it! How can they possibly think this is a good idea.
Probably because they figure once the averagae person installs 12 of these ***** without realising and their system starts going ***** up, they'll just blame windows - Quintessence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As if I did not hate Sony enough. (Go Nintendo!)
Why do they make it even less appealing to but CDs? Not only are they overpriced but now they cannot even be used for what the legitimate owner wants. I expect piracy to only increase because of this. Way to go Sony!
Anyway, I refuse to buy any copyright CDs for the time being, and if I ever do I will be safe, hopefully, because I have auto-run off. - terafunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sony is sucking more by the day, but they sure as heck aren't the only ones doing this sort of thing--only the biggest. FOR SHAME!!!
- MrZaiko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This kind of drew the line for me.
The diff between blue ray and HD-DVD is that blueray is more COPY PROTECTED, that's ***** it!!
they are only being innovative In HOW TO ***** PEOPLE UP - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bluray can lick my balls
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did you guys expect more from Sony (or any other record company)?
My rant here - http://delicategeniusblog.com/?p=68
-dg - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MS Windows doesn't have root, they only have administrator. Root is a unix thing.
- oliyoung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jebus, talk about shooting yourself in the foot .. +digg

"I closed the player and expected $sys$DRMServer’s CPU usage to drop to zero, but was dismayed to see that it was still consuming between one and two percent. It appears I was paying an unknown CPU penalty for just having the process active on my system."
This is what really got to me. I mean, 1% - 2% of CPU usage continuously?!? Thats just not ok. - karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is really low. I have been avoiding the RIAA like the plague the past couple of years though. http://www.magnetbox.com/riaa/ Go Indie labels!
- Presentlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rootkits...I suppose that is the best way for Sony to enforce their DRM. It is much more difficult to crack. Still, DRM is a rip. My view of Sony has been lowered a notch, not that I respected them much to begin with.
- jborg91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No. Freakin. Way. This is so far over the line I can't believe it. Sony has just lost any trust I ever had in their company and any possibility I will ever buy one of their products again. If they will do this, what else might be lurking around the corner? I for one won't be taking any chances.
- imdigginthis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The market has been dragging Sony kicking and screaming behind the MP3 locomotive. They are becoming the tail of the dog in market that is crying for innovative products. DRM is going to bury their company!
