- AMadeUpName, on 10/11/2007, -20/+295I have seen this story run on digg at least 3 times and once before that on /.
It seems to pop up every 6 months or so. - geekchic, on 10/11/2007, -10/+263Seen it before, but this is one of those "dupes" which is not a dupe, but "another chance to enjoy".
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/24/2007, -11/+221I intentionally leave my network open. I block all the common filesharing ports for any computer not on the allowed list (mine, basically) so i dont have to worry about some idiot flagging my router.
I do, however, mine passwords and user names...actually, anything sent by POST or GET gets logged. I have passwords to a ton of sites, some of them good sites. I also have a neighbor thats an -amateur- developer (web), hes not bad, but his code is kinda weak... Every now and then i'll mess with him and break up his ftp traffic...
Am I a cruel ***** for doing this, maybe... but you're on my ***** ... you think you're smart ... I'm smarter. Between some good linux tools, and a couple good windows ones, you can pretty much intercept anything coming or going across your network (by the way, my setup is wireless router -> nic1 on my pc -> nic2 on my pc -> router -> internet.) So all the wireless stuff comes through my computer...none of the hacked router firmwares are nearly malicious enough for my tastes.
What amazes me, is I dont even really know what im doing. Im a nerd, but im a php nerd, the networking stuff is just something i never wanted to really learn...but with all the tools out there, you dont need to know anything to get all kinds of data.
*BTW ... I draw the line at sensitive stuff. I have exceptions for anything going to or from .gov addresses, a huge list of bank domain names, and If something comes through with CC info or really personal stuff, i delete it. I might be a little sadistic, but im not a true bastard. - dorianh49, on 10/11/2007, -19/+199im in ur wifiz flippin ur pitchurz
- Scheissenegger, on 10/11/2007, -17/+167Or hack in your neighbors wifi and let him browse upside down:
http://www.profit42.com/index.php/2006/08/02/92/ (WEP crack)
http://www.profit42.com/index.php/2006/08/20/cracking-wpa/ (WPA crack)
http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pete/upside-down-ternet.html (Link to this article) - Spuy767, on 10/11/2007, -5/+132I've been doing this for years instead of securing my network. I love to think how many marriages I've ruined by redirecting all traffic to meatspin.com.
- allywilson, on 10/11/2007, -3/+127I'd rather have a photo of them with the laptop upside down
- mwsherman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+92Where's the goatse script?
- isntreal, on 10/11/2007, -5/+94Its funny when nerds try to acknowledge the girl in the room (or on the board.)
- vroxx, on 10/11/2007, -15/+102Want to really stick it to them??? Call the police, because apparently now its a felony punishable by five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9722006-7.html - Phlosten, on 10/11/2007, -12/+80Heh, sensational!
- retral, on 10/11/2007, -16/+84So if someone leaves their door unlocked and you go in and steal their computer, money and jewelry.. it's not stealing?
- AlpineR, on 10/11/2007, -15/+75@roosterjm2k2 saying "you think you're smart ... I'm smarter."
Wow, you're having a nerdy chest-thumping contest over wifi? Unless you've turned on encryption then nobody is challenging your brilliance by accessing your openly broadcast network connection.
Many laptops semi-automatically use whichever wifi station gives the strongest signal. I have my own router and leave it wide open. Sometimes my DSL connection blacks out and I like to still have Internet access through my neighbors'. So I share the favor. Unfortunately none of the other 5+ networks I see are open anymore. Lots of leeches but not enough altruists.
The linked hack is cool. But unless you came up with the idea and wrote the code yourself then it doesn't show that you're smarter than anyone -- you're just a script kiddie.
And there's a difference between having a little fun and being a jerk. You snoop on your neighbors traffic? That's kind of like putting a bowl of M&Ms on your desk at work. M&Ms that you secretly did... unpleasant things to. Sure, you never guaranteed anybody that they're clean and it's their own fault for eating them. But the bad karma should have you spending your next life as a pigeon. - Bahimiron, on 10/11/2007, -2/+61Set up a webcam pointed at your neighbor's window, then redirect them to that feed.
Other than the part where you go to jail, that would be good for a chuckle. - RyeBrye, on 10/11/2007, -15/+71This story is on digg every 6 months.
- underthelinux, on 10/11/2007, -2/+56print to their printers. That's always fun.
"Jim Halpert: Before I left, I took a box of Dwight's stationary with me. So to mess with him, I send him a fax every morning and make him think it's himself faxing him.
Dwight Schrute: [Reading a fax from Jim] "Dear Dwight, at approximatley 9:30 this morning, someone will contaminate the coffee. Sincerley, Future Dwight." Oh my God. " - Flanker, on 10/11/2007, -6/+54Seriously though . . . I wonder what the submitter was thinking when Digg asked him if his submission was a duplicate of the exact same story submitted with the exact same title and dugg to the front page with over 6000 diggs the last time.
"Heh . . . no one will remember and I'll get another front-page story!"
http://digg.com/security/So_neighbors_steal_your_wi_fi_net_access_kill_the_connection_or_have_fun - EmileVictor, on 10/11/2007, -40/+88As most people run Windows, can someone share a windows alternative for this? As much as I'd like to, I do not run linux.
- fluxion, on 10/11/2007, -6/+53use free wireless, be prepared to get screwed around with. that's my motto. you get what you pay for, no?
- vulapine, on 10/11/2007, -10/+53It's ok when I steal music, but you better not touch my bandwidth.
- eean, on 10/11/2007, -1/+43If the RIAA polluted P2P with reverse music and music videos, more power to them. That'd be funny. :)
- masonreloaded, on 10/11/2007, -6/+45Ho hum, another day, another argument on Digg about what is and isn't stealing... :)
- madhighlandcow, on 10/11/2007, -8/+46@robdowns: You, sir, are a muppet.
moo. - BobTurtle, on 10/11/2007, -9/+43@spuy767
WILL YOU SHUT THE ***** UP ABOUT MEATSPIN.COM ALREADY!?
This is your second comment stating how "hilarious" you are for directing to meatspin.com. We get it, you're super edgy and you love to watch the the meatspin gif so much that you set it as both your desktop background and browser's homepage. Now let it go, it's getting old. - skyfire1, on 10/11/2007, -1/+35I'm glad my neighbors don't know about digg. Satellite internet is expensive as hell.
- Rooster99, on 10/11/2007, -7/+40@AlpineR
Actually, its fair enough what he's doing. Using your analogy, lets say I brought a bowl of M&M's to work. MY M&M's. No-one else's. MINE! Now lets say that you notice people stealing your M&M's. See where Im going with this?? Sure, this guy might seem like an ***** for stealing passwords, but the people they are stolen from are pretty much stealing his internet. If they hadent stolen his internet, then no passwords would be taken. They should know the risk, and they should know better.
When I moved into my new place, I had a look at my housemates wireless router logs and...lets just say that it appeared the entire street was jacking his connection. The thing was that nobody knew exactly where the connection was. During a trip to the letterbox, I heard these kids bitching about the fact that some ***** had put secuirty on the router, and they couldnt get the net on their PSP's any more. They got quite the serving from me that day. I know it seems really petty to go off at someone for stealing your internet, but in this day and age, you dont want people looking up stuff like kiddie porn on your connection. Because at the end of the day, its your connection and you have to be responsible for who has access to it. I know theres no way to prove that I personally looked at kiddie porn, but most judges are pretty stupid when it comes to tech. They would probably see it as "your connection, your responsibility".
If you dont believe me then look up that poor substitute teacher thats getting ***** for having malware and spyware on the school computer, and inadvertently showing porn pop-ups to the children. We all know there wasent much she can do. We know she's innocent. But so far it looks like the rest of the world is seeing her as guilty because they dont understand tech. - mardigrasnut, on 11/05/2007, -3/+35I want a photo of the neighbor shaking his laptop wondering what is going on.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33...or so you told your wife...
- Pozer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+33why not re-direct them to a website with a picture of their house with the heading, "you are here".
Furthermore it should have some kind of ticker underneath that says Penalty for falsely using bandwidth and let it go up 1 dollar every second. - TubaTechno, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29This just makes me want to open my wireless network so I can do this.....
- quisph, on 10/11/2007, -5/+32You would have to, if you wanted to use Linux! *ducking*
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -5/+30Unsecured WiFi is broadcasted like a radio station, beaming radio waves in all directions and into other people's houses. Thus it is being given away freely.
If someone puts their goods on the public sidewalk in front of their house it's not stealing. If someone puts their goods inside my house and I use them it is not stealing. - thomas, on 10/11/2007, -2/+26When I was in college and broke I "borrowed" internet access from one of my neighbors. It was very slow and I had to sit on the toilet to get a signal.
- Dolomite, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28Great idea, but is it really stealing if you are giving your bandwidth away for free?
- Ratking, on 10/11/2007, -15/+39Seriously old story.
Did you check the ad for the "New iMac G5"? - Spyscience, on 10/11/2007, -3/+26oh man, did you actually go for the 80's "computer geeks don't get chicks" stance? .
- iherbivore, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24How about some subliminal overlays? Like 'give your neighbor your money', or 'kill all the rabbits'. That would be cool.
- Greyarea, on 10/11/2007, -12/+34Yes it is.
- Andechs, on 10/11/2007, -4/+25@EmileVictor
the software used in the article runs on windows as well as linux
http://www.wirelessdefence.org/Contents/WirelessWin32Tools.htm - masonreloaded, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Yeah, that would be awesome - give them a google satellite shot of their home... with the text: "We are watching you..." Freak them out...
- deathweaver108, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19If you don't like seeing it again digg it down for being a dup.
The functionality is there. I dislike seeing cry about dups more than I dislike the dup itself - operand, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19@retral: Some insurance companies will NOT pick up the tab if a car is unlocked and its stolen - its justified because you are an idiot for not locking it. Same with WIFI - if you want to share, prepare that not all people are friendly.
Also - a better analogy is allowing people to use your car or house freely. Some people will not do a thing to it while others will damage for fun. - Fredtheviking, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19But it still awesome.
- heffeque, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Good thing is that that script works for blocking P2P too :-P
- j4son, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17oh man, did you just use the word 'kooze'?
- violentvinyl, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16@retral (#6864649)
That's a fabulous analogy, will you please run for office so we can let you decide policy on things like this?
Seriously, using someone elses WAP without preventing them from accessing it hardly equates to stealing it from them. If I walk into your cubicle while you're in the bathroom, use your Red Swingline Stapler, and then put it back where I found it, did I steal it?
Furthermore, in the interest of progressive thinking, are we not really all better off if we all leave our WAPs open to the public and figure out a way to defer the costs (ads, low monthly fees for those who don't have their own access points, etc.) and use secure connections (VPN, SSL, etc.)? - skinwill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12 - Geek squad how may we help you?
- my interweb is blurry
- what? - pzarker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12After looking at the amount of bad comments by BobTurtle, I would say he is the one trying to come off as an *****, no?
- NikhilPK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Heh, didn't they try doing something like this before? I remember when kazaa was big, there were a bunch of files of popular songs at the time on the network that played the first few seconds of the song before making extremely irritating scratching noises.
- tugger, on 10/11/2007, -7/+18Thats because they don't spend every weekend reinstalling windows...
