- roarkmeister, on 10/08/2009, -1/+172HORRAY! With an all Democrat congress, we can start to heal the damage and right the wrongs of the bush years! Right, senators? Or we could just... not... and...
*****. - Ninh, on 10/08/2009, -1/+95Different party, same treason?
- algaeturd, on 10/09/2009, -3/+84The government NEVER returns power to the people. It doesn't happen. The government takes MORE power from the people...it's not in the business of giving it back.
So for anyone who thought this would be overturned eventually, brush up on your history and you'll see this consistent pattern of people slowly LOSING freedom and privacy. I don't care what party you're talking about...once they obtain new power, they never return it.
It certainly doesn't justify renewing any of this ***** but you have to look at government through the scope of history. Thinking that anyone would vote this down is just unrealistic. It's sad that things are that way but people TAKE power back from the government... it is not given to them. - InetRoadkill, on 10/09/2009, -0/+68Makes you want to throw up, doesn't it?
What they're saying is that the constitution is no longer the supreme law of the land because it's a security liability.
~~To protect your freedom, we must destroy your freedoms before the terrorists do it.~~
It doesn't matter which party is in control anymore. They are all cowards and *****. - ParadiscaCorbas, on 10/08/2009, -1/+61Argh.
Why, guys? Why are you letting this affront to freedom continue? - reeds1999, on 10/08/2009, -1/+54FTA: 'Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wisconsin, countered there was no evidence that adding limited privacy protections for Americans would hinder any investigation. Instead, he said, his colleagues were sanctioning “fishing expeditions.”'
So true! Defeat this monstrosity. - NYYBronxBombers, on 10/09/2009, -3/+54Thanks Democrats! I will be taking my vote to a 3rd party for all local, state, and federal elections.
- inactive, on 10/09/2009, -11/+61Don't blame me, I voted Libertarian.
- AlterLite, on 10/09/2009, -0/+43Interesting, more Republicans voted AGAINST the bill than Democrats...
- NorthMass, on 10/09/2009, -1/+35Al Franken supported this? So much for him being a genuine liberal like Feingold, he seemed good on the bailouts and FISA, but this just shows that Feingold is the only true liberal left in the Senate, just like DeMint is the only true conservative.
"Voting to send the package to the Senate floor were:
Democrats (9)
Benjamin Cardin, Maryland
Dianne Feinstein, California
Al Franken, Minnesota
Edward Kaufman, Delaware
Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota
Herb Kohl, Wisconsin
Patrick Leahy, Vermont
Charles Schumer, New York
Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island
Republicans (2)
John Cornyn, Texas
Jon Kyl, Arizona"
Let this be a wake up call to the Diggers who think the Democrats are any better than the Republicans. - pinchduck, on 10/09/2009, -3/+33Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...
- inactive, on 10/09/2009, -0/+28Don't vote Republican or Democrat, they are ruining our country. They've promised education reform, the bedrock of our workforce, but have we seen it? They promise so much but never deliver and now what?
- isgk, on 10/09/2009, -1/+28This is the ***** we are talking about !!!
1) Allowed the government to deport people based on secret evidence
2) Made it illegal to support any organization labeled as a terrorist group by the government (including via normal legal means... i.e. a bake sale)
3) Rolled back the FBI restrictions from two years before preventing them from opening up an investigation of individuals giving material support to terrorists based purely on items that are protected under the first ammendment (i.e. go into Mosques undercover, based solely on word of mouth)
4) Freeze all assets of foreign or US citizen tought to be part of a terrorist group, without having to tell the evidence
5) Expanded the federal secret courts power (you know that stuff Clinton now says "sure we made a statement we believed we had the power to do that, but we never would use it...)
6) Allowed the FBI to open up a case on individuals who they believed to just be only associates of a suspected terrorist, better watch out who you know
7)Gutted habeous corpus
8) Established the secret court "Alien Terrorist Removal Court"
Wait... that stuff was actually from the 1996 "Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act" or basically the predessor to the Patriot Act.
Here is President Bill Clinton's words as he signed the bill
"I first transmitted antiterrorism legislation to the Congress in February 1995. Most of the proposals in that legislation, the "Omnibus Counterterrorism Act of 1995," were aimed at fighting international terrorism. After the tragedy in Oklahoma City, I asked Federal law enforcement agencies to reassess their needs and determine which tools would help them meet the new challenge of domestic terrorism. They produced, and I transmitted to the Congress, the "Antiterrorism Amendments Act of 1995" in May 1995.
Together, these two proposals took a comprehensive approach to fighting terrorism both at home and abroad. I am pleased that the Congress included most of the provisions of these proposals in this legislation. As a result, our law enforcement officials will have tough new tools to stop terrorists before they strike and to bring them to justice if they do."
So I ask you why you think the Dems (or Repubs) having signed up for this in 1996 would be against it now that they have power... When they didn't have control they used it as their rallying call to whip up support for them (and in fact in a similar bizarro twist during the 90's the Repubs campaigned against it as an abuse of power). As soon as they get back in control, it's back to the same stuff...
Repub/Dem it's two sides of the same coin on this issue and only the idiot sheep think the Dem members of congress & president actually would go against pretty much what they signed up for the last time they were in power. - devlindark, on 10/09/2009, -1/+27This ***** ***** Obama I feel for it all hook line and sinker, I mean really I did, and I defended him in debates most heated ones
defended that he was going to all that he said on Iraq, Afghanistan, all of it and what do we have now, ***** ***** *****
this guy hasn't done a ***** thing since he got there but continue on with all of the ***** policies and practices that Bush put in place that everyone bitched about, cried about, shed tears about, have thousands and thousands of websites about how bad everything was.
Only in this administration could we see where we have a majority across the board yet we can't get ***** done. and the things we do
are things we spoke out against. Sad to say this but here is a one term president if ever. Yeah he's only been in office 11 months but man oh man how he has let us down,
- spyd3rweb, on 10/09/2009, -1/+23Try to take away the DoHS's new found powers and they will just threaten the people with more terror attacks.
- inactive, on 10/09/2009, -1/+23Our government ***** sucks ass.
- idbjoshm, on 10/09/2009, -2/+24Ron Paul is right! It doesn't matter if you vote Republican or Democrat, its the same *****!
- starlon2, on 10/09/2009, -0/+21Yeah, ***** the Constitution! It's just a piece of paper!
That said, it's going to take some judicial review to get rid of this ***** I'm afraid. - changedmind, on 10/09/2009, -7/+28Ka-ching! Change you can believe in!
- AManWithNoName, on 10/09/2009, -1/+22WHAT.
THE.
*****.
I'm sending as many angry emails to my state's Senators as I can. - snapcase, on 10/09/2009, -0/+19So glad we have Legislators that actually try to honor their Oath of Office to uphold the Constitution... aren't you?
- Giever, on 10/09/2009, -2/+21Y'know, I've got this rock here that keeps lions away, if you're interested.
- seanayb, on 10/09/2009, -0/+18EMERGENCY POWERS =/= PERMANENT LAWS
CONGRESS: YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG - frcc, on 10/09/2009, -11/+29It's a bunch of neocons masquerading as a two party system.
- Propethic, on 10/09/2009, -0/+18http://educate-yourself.org/cn/patriotact20012006s ...
Why is anyone surprised? - frcc, on 10/09/2009, -1/+19Benjamin Franklin warned of sacrificing liberty for safety. I guess people aren't interested in history or the lessons it teaches.
- samsmartjr, on 10/09/2009, -0/+18I haven't.
- Nerys, on 10/09/2009, -0/+16thats just it they are not cowards. They are traitors and criminals.
- RyeBrye, on 10/09/2009, -5/+19Change we can believe in.
- NorthMass, on 10/09/2009, -2/+15It just shows that both parties are the same, whichever party is out of power opposes some government expansion but not enough to actually stop the government from expanding.
- jakobrowning, on 10/09/2009, -0/+13So we got a new president, and what's come of it?
A war that we've decided to go ahead and stay in.
A prison that we just can't seem to close.
And a Patriot Act that just got renewed again?!
What The *****?! What happened to all that change? - SkittlesUSA, on 10/09/2009, -3/+15Sorry digg- this is what you get with big government. You can't expect to give the government power outside the Constitution to redistribute wealth, act as a charity organization, and do whatever it wants as long as it is in the "general welfare" (elementary and inaccurate interpretation of the constitution by the way) and expect this ***** not to happen.
You get what you ask for. - brainboy7777, on 10/09/2009, -0/+11Telecoms. Duh.
- tgc1, on 10/09/2009, -0/+11They don't read the legislation they pass into law. What makes you think they'll read your letter?
- aychseven, on 10/09/2009, -0/+11don't blame me. i voted against most of the people elected in my state. i've also written many letters to our politicians and signed petitions etc. i can't exactly participate in protests etc considering i live overseas.
- emmeron, on 10/09/2009, -0/+10I like Ron Paul, but he's not really more than 90% libertarian. He's really old school conservative ... I admit, in this political arena, that looks very similar. By comparison, to scale, they're overlapping dots with miles between what the rest of DC is.
Browne is really great though -- an excellent speaker to boot. - allisonV12, on 10/09/2009, -2/+12Patriot *****
Does it apply to the financial terrorists holding America hostage
Or did the American government surrender to their threats and pay a ransom? - TobiasParker, on 10/09/2009, -1/+11Ditto.
- javaroast, on 10/09/2009, -0/+10Russ is the best. The only Senator to vote against the original bill for the Patriot Act.
http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_li ... - odkin, on 10/09/2009, -9/+19And because Democrats are in charge, Diggers forget their 8 years of raging about looming martial law.
- Khast, on 10/09/2009, -1/+9uh-huh....as if we really were on every "terrorist" group's hit list. You know, as much as our government wants to justify security, I applaud them. They will have to destroy the ENTIRE ***** WORLD to get rid of terrorism.
Terrorism has been around since man first existed...whether you believe in creation, or evolution.
And Terrorism will be around until mankind is completely extinct. - Giever, on 10/09/2009, -0/+8You are too, y'know.
(As am I.) - Nelagster, on 10/09/2009, -0/+8He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security.
-Benjamin Franklin - TobiasParker, on 10/09/2009, -1/+8Don't know who is running yet.
- errik03, on 10/09/2009, -2/+9CHANGE AND HOPE
- tgc1, on 10/09/2009, -0/+7There has yet to be a government in all the world, through any part of history who hasn't.
- Elranzer, on 10/09/2009, -0/+7The only way government returns power to the people is when the government is overthrow in a revolution and a new government is started. This has happened several times in France already.
Even Thomas Jefferson has suggested this, and has foreseen the United States growing too large in government than what the founding fathers ave originally envisioned. - NorthMass, on 10/09/2009, -4/+10Bob Barr was the candidate this year, I initially supported him but he acted juvenile and his past-record was too much to handle. Badnarik and Browne were true awesome libertarians, as is Ron Paul.
- sndream, on 10/09/2009, -0/+6Yes we can't.
- vvaduva, on 10/09/2009, -1/+7I second your comment - the same morons complaining now on Digg about this have voted for the Democrats and for Obama, who is ready to sign this into law.
Bend over and stop whining suckers...take it like the real liberals you are! -
