- samanathon, on 09/05/2009, -0/+10"The worm can be tough to catch, as Mullenweg explains: "it registers a user, uses a security bug (fixed earlier in the year) to allow evaluated code to be executed through the permalink structure, makes itself an admin, then uses JavaScript to hide itself when you look at users page, attempts to clean up after itself, then goes quiet so you never notice while it inserts hidden spam and malware into your old posts. The vulnerability allowing the attack was discovered August 11, at which point WordPress encouraged users to upgrade to version 2.8.4."

Old versions of Wordpress have bugs and you should upgrade? Seriously?!?! Thanks for stating the obvious! - Mihai12345, on 09/06/2009, -1/+8And if you don't the worm will ***** up your theme and ***** and then be forced to reinstall anyway, in case it leaves behind more hidden crap. Choose your poison.
- sloppychris, on 09/06/2009, -0/+7A lot of upgrades are backwards compatible.
- TheVirus, on 09/06/2009, -0/+7Right, because that always works.
Windows has finished downloading updates. Click here to install them. - sloppychris, on 09/06/2009, -0/+6According to the report, the vulnerability was already fixed earlier in the year.
- phatbyte, on 09/06/2009, -0/+5Wordpress is the new PHP nuke.
- EnTaroTassadar, on 09/06/2009, -0/+4Damn, that's scary. Went ahead and updated immediately after reading this.
Anybody know if when this bot creates a new user, if an email is sent to the admin email account like it would for a normal registration? - donnikhan, on 09/06/2009, -1/+5But if I upgrade wordpress its going to ***** up my theme and plugins and *****
</not a coder> - TracerMan, on 09/06/2009, -0/+3I wanna know why they have a picture of Halo 3 promotional art as their background
- brodie7838, on 09/06/2009, -0/+2When isn't Word Press being exploited?
- TBBucs, on 09/06/2009, -1/+3Good day to be a Drupal user.

- mcwattersm, on 09/06/2009, -0/+2Sounds like a fun Monday for me.
- fuzzynyanko, on 09/06/2009, -0/+124 hours... it would suck to be on vacation without Internet access if you need to apply an update within 24 hours
- fuzzynyanko, on 09/06/2009, -0/+1I've actually come across a blog from a google link and got malware notices. Turns out, the blog owners REALLY appreciate it when you let them know. It's shocking because I looked at one once, and you can't tell that there's a problem on it from the outside.
- NidStyles, on 09/06/2009, -0/+1Go figure this right after Hakin9 releases the best of 2009 article issue with this vunerability in it..
- gunit99, on 09/06/2009, -1/+2Upgrading all my outdated WP sites now....annnd done. That was easy.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 09/06/2009, -0/+1Smashing Magazine was attacked and they took their server down before anything could be compromised really. The attacker did apparently change some html files but it could have been much much worse from what they said.
- RadiantSilver, on 09/07/2009, -0/+1Also, ***** everyone who dugg me down!!
- CenterWorld, on 09/21/2009, -0/+0Use protection system that PHPIDS or WSS
- slither83, on 09/06/2009, -1/+1Wordpress should make it easier to update the blog to a new version (and i'm not talking about "one-click" update here...). My experience with Wordpress is that they tend to make breaking changes to their APIs too often, sometimes even on small version releases. This creates a problem for people who depend on specific plugins, that aren't compatible with the new version. (and sometimes it can take a while for plugins to be updated to work on the newest minor release...) Just my 2 cents. I still think Wordpress is one of the best blogging/web app platform.
- confid3nt, on 09/06/2009, -4/+2Almost 24hrs after discovering the error, a new version of wp, aka wp 2.8.4 was released. And even if you're not read their homepage, your blog will remind you. An epic virus could be stopped just by a small update, as usual.
Buried because of ignorance. - macslut, on 09/06/2009, -3/+1A small update that will, in many cases significantly break functionality, and requires work arounds. I was putting off this update until I had time to do this on various sites, but now I guess I'll be working this labor day weekend.
♫I'm on my boat mother *****, yeah, on my boat...never though I'd be on a boat...updating Wordpress, protecting against worms 'n *****, on my mother ***** boat.♫ - RadiantSilver, on 09/06/2009, -3/+1How did this vague crap make the front page of Digg? Everyone knows that WordPress is targeted constantly. Buried. Absolutely no tangible information to be found here. *****!
- sonofabiscuit, on 09/06/2009, -8/+4***** TechCrunch!
- technogati, on 09/06/2009, -6/+1Really shocked news for me and all the professional users and bloggers of Wordpress.
