- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29ME was the worst OS ever conceived by man.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17This is really getting ridiculous. A company has no right to install a trojan on my machine, whether or not what the wordy EULA says.

What I HATE is people shoving something down my throat. Ubuntu's disk won't even run in my laptop, tried it. Even if I didn't, just because Ubuntu isn't taking it up the ass from these things now doesn't mean you can look down on everyone not using it.
Just because I have Windows on my laptop does not justify referring to me, or anyone else who uses it, as an idiot. One reason why Ubuntu is getting so popular is because the community is friendly and open, whereas most Linux communities before talked crap to Windows users. Thats a good attempt at throwing Ubuntu back, though. - radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Windows Me

"In Vista, it should be much more difficult for unauthorized programs (like Viruses and Trojans) to affect the core of the OS and secretly harm your system." - joeysafe, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Vista for me so far has been great at stopping unauthorized changes. It has a new feature that requires user approval for anything that requires root (oh wait it's not Linux...) Administrator permissions. It can be turned off, but I find it nice.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well, not to say ME was even functional, but I felt like Mac OS before 10x was horrible. My most long term experiences were with System 7 and OS 9. I've always liked Apple computers, I've been using them for around 18 years now, as well as each version of Windows (including some Windows server versions) as well as test driving many Linux distros and maintaining an Ubuntu machine (previously . But after all that experience, I have to say the stability due to the cooperative multitasking was just so horrifically crippling that I couldn't stand to live with it. Then again, I couldn't live with ME either...
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Just when we need Sysinternals most, what happens?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's not the point. The point is that vendors who are supposedly trustworthy (like Sony) now have the ability to COVERTLY install this malware on your PC. How are you going to prevent that when you install it yourself because you trusted the company?
There needs to be a law passed about this kind of malicious activity by any company or organization--including the Bush administration. :p - mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Blocking rootkits is pretty simple. http://www.networkintrusion.co.uk/hips.htm
Detecting them after they get in, that's the problem here. - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"Windows ME: Like Y2K actually happened!"
- btstewart, on 08/26/2009, -0/+2I actually RTFA, and I have a question. Because this new rootkit infects the systems's kernel, does it require a reboot to actually start functioning?
- mastermechanic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2On the brightside you can prevent them
- m00kie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5attention lifelosers, nobody cares that you were dumb enough to get ME. What does it have anything to do with rootkits and the point of this article?
- Dallas70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately once you have a rootkit on your PC it's such a pain to remove that your best option would be to reinstall
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read what radiofrequency wrote.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Guess Mark Russinovich is still here to save the day.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2rootkits getting better at hiding? hm...that's funny, so is that pervert outside my bedroom window...hm
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3No edit time?
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Okay. Now it's MY turn to nitpick.
Is it just me, or do we see an article on "Rootkits getting better at hiding" at least once a week?
That's nice, but where's the Ways to BLOCK Rootkits articles?
And now, I'm not getting a Mac, and I can't run some apps on Ubuntu yet, so please STFU. - godares, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Fedora anyone?
- r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Am I the only one who's sceptical of BennyBoy. "ubuntu disc won't even run on my laptop". Did you even make a bootable cd? Did you have any idea what you're doing? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no. But, yes, the ubuntu community is extremely friendly, and I make a special effort when promoting ubuntu not to bash windows or its users.
- a10webb, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I've already experienced some hard to remove trojans, booting into safemode to run 5 different programs that each find 20-30 trojans that have installed DNS changers and booting back to check if they've reinstalled themselves elsewhere. if only i could game on my dual booted linux i wouldn't have to bother with winblow's lack of security.
- NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Yet another reason to switch to Linux, Folks!
- m00kie, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1^ who cares dude. get a mac and stop bitching about how you're too dumb to work with linux
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Well what are you going to do about it then? Just sitting around and complaining isn't going to fix anything.
- getrealnow, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3I hated ME so bad, when I was younger didnt even know about linux...oh the horror!
- thedonquixote, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3Mmm, a nice hot cup o Linux sounds good right now. Mmmm penguin blood.
- l0rdn1k0n, on 10/12/2007, -28/+8why don't these idiots just download kubuntu already? come on.
