- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9OK, you people are idiots.
SONY DID NOT DO THIS!
THIS IS A FOX DVD, NOT SONY.
STOP BLAMING SONY FOR FOX'S MISTAKE!
I mean, I'm as pissed off at Sony as the next guy, but I draw the line at blaming Sony for a rootkit on a Fox DVD that Sony had nothing to do with.
To sum up:
THIS IS FOX, NOT SONY! FOX FOX FOX FOX FOX! - EyeDye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5To Disable CD autoplay, completely, in Windows XP Pro
1) Click Start, Run and enter GPEDIT.MSC
2) Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System.
3) Locate the entry for Turn autoplay off and modify it as you desire. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"I despise root kits I can see it now soon we'll have Root Sweeper or RootAware....."
Or Blacklight? http://www.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/index.shtml
Or RootKitRevealer? http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html - truk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Can anyone verify if this is actually a Sony DVD? The digg title says so, but not the article, and according to amazon.com its a 20th century fox movie
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Truk
You are correct. This is a 20th Century Fox film. Not a Sony film. Fox is owned by Rupert Murdoch. Now, the question is, will the anti-Sony fanboiz cop to their mistake and now boycott Fox with as much vigor as they have Sony. - hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4http://digg.com/security/Sony_BMG_not_to_blame_for_Mr._and_Mrs._Smith_DVD_rootkit
FOX DISTRIBUTED THIS MOVIE, DIGG THE ABOVE STORY!
SONY IS NOT TO BLAME FOR THIS! - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you know, one of the first things i though of was, "gee, i better go to www.imdb.com and check to see if this movie really is produced by sony." sure enough, someone else chimes in and saves me the trouble.
THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WHY SLASHDOT PISSES ON DIGG!
get your f'ing facts straight people! otherwise, you make digg (and yourself) look REALLY, REALLY LAME! - gsmithEIDW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Remember that interview with the guy from SonyBMG after the original rootkit issue? I have never read anything so arrogant and that still rings in my ears. It seems that they intend to dogmatically continue to push this stuff. Their argument is that other competitors will start to do the same and we'll be left with no choice. Their long term plan for the future is bleak - music cds that only play a finite number of times - subscription based everything and users posessing nothing.
Sony have really turned a lot of people against them with their recent policies. Let us not forget the other incidents of unethical things they have done in the past couple of years such as the company actiing on their behalf that was aledged to have paid grafiti artists to draw pictures of PSP in deprived areas. Even the grafiti artists saw the error of their ways and defaced their own drawings.
All large businesses are greedy. Dont think for a moment that Microsoft or other comparable companies wouldn't do similar tactics. But normally these plans happen gradually or as part of industry agreements. Sony appear to be going solo on this and for that they are quite likely to be burnt as result. I predict it is only a matter of time before Sony's tactics draw scorn from the mainstream as well as those with particular interests in technology, digital rights and multimedia. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5WTF is wrong with these freakin people??? All it does is punishes the honest people. For ***** sake, the honest people that drop the $$ on their malware infected crap get screwed over, while pirates have a nice clean version.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Do the right thing and report this as INACCURATE, people. The F-Secure article is not at fault, the idiot who submitted this to Digg and blamed it on Sony is at fault.
- EyeDye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2INACCURATE + DUPE!
Digg here instead...
http://digg.com/movies/New_DVD_copy_protection_found_on_German_DVDs - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@guspaz
Done. Thanks for the mental prod. - ThadBoyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...Not only is the movie not distributed by Sony, but the Sony-BMG comment in the article doesn't even make sense, as BMG is the music division.
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Better hold that shift key down when loading cd/dvd's onto your system people.
- Diggburst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"wow...this was the last sony movie I watched before I just started ignoring everything they put out...luckly I run Linux so no problem there.."
Maybe you just started to ignore looking at what you watch? Last sony movie?
You should double check your OS it might be windows the way you pay attention. - rebrad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry, this DVD is distributed by Kinowelt Home in Germany and I'm sure they want to be Sony someday so they figured that they should do as $ony does. Now if they can only duplicate $ony's DRM scheme on blu-ray that only takes up 25 GB of space on a 50 GB disc. Talk about bloat, you'd think even $ony could make a more efficient DRM package. I know I don't have the space on my system to run blu-ray. I can't afford 25 GB of space just to play one of their lousy shows.

- cl0ck_werk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this really really sucks, i like to rent movies and watch them on my home computer, cause my TV is small and my computer chair is comfy, now i have to worry about if the disk has a rootkit or not.
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wow, mob mentality, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Never underestimate the destructive power of stupid people in large groups. - ApplePenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm surprised the grammar nazis haven't caught the extra apostrophe in this headline yet...
- archonon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Idiots. This DVD is not released by Sony. Get your facts correct before yelling here to ban Sony. You are just make yourself look stupid and Digg too.
Typical Digg n00bs. This one thing why I'll go to Slashdot. - tom6a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay, so we see that it is Fox, not Sony. A couple months ago when we had the Sony fiasco with rootkits on music CD's, Matt Vea wrote a great article about root kits. It's well written and well researched.
The "r00t" of Digital Evil
http://www.omninerd.com/2005/11/22/articles/43 - FishyJoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The next thing? Blu-ray
- hellb0y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what will be the next thing...
- unexplainedmilk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The balls of some people.
I hope the world really does end in 2012 with these DRM systems coming out now days.
Democratic Recession Movement - lx805, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NO dig. Grossly inaccurate title. Did any of you 700 or so diggers actually *read* the article before clicking "digg it"?
- BigEagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Spy Sweeper from Webroot Software (http://www.webroot.com/) detects and removes rootkits.
- MossFly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So that's why Blue Ray discs have so much storage space on them. its not for HD. its for as much crappy DRM as they fit. :P
- lx805, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Correcting my previous post... the "teaser" is grossly inaccurate. The title is just inflammatory.
- F1R3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol.. sony should make sure noone else uses a rootkit because they will get blamed for it!
Blue ray though will ofcourse be "protection-centric", so noone will have to use rootkits anymore because you'll already be screwed. - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2To try to make people aware of the correct company at fault here (Who we really should be blaming), I've submitted a correction:
http://digg.com/security/Sony_BMG_not_to_blame_for_Mr._and_Mrs._Smith_DVD_rootkit - NJank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Report Problem: Inaccurate
- Xipher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's the way of the future people. Quit whining and just get used to it.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'll add 20th Century Fox to my list of evil companies.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Only way they will learn is for them to go out of business.
It would be sweet if NO one bought a PS3. That sure would be a nice kick in the balls for that arrogant ***** company. - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0And from that last comment, I guess the answer is, "No." Sigh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"I'm so fed up with Sony. I'm tempted to sell my PSP just because I despise them so much."
Sell it to me! I'll give ya $50. That'll REALLY teach 'em! - aliendave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0OH- Nr.! Ich wünsche nicht ein rootkit!
- foetus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Who'd have ever thought we'd be rooting for Microsoft to take down an "evil" organization! (Xbox 360 vs. PS3)... It's like hoping that your skin cancer will kill your herpes!
- Yorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0German hackers are among some of the best in the world, IMHO. I highly doubt they'll have any trouble removing it. Some of them are well-known rootkit coders themselves!
- po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"I'm so fed up with Sony. I'm tempted to sell my PSP just because I despise them so much."
Me too. Plus it's 2.01
Fony Suck - nature, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The Digg "crew" makes me ashamed to be on the intermaweb
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0BTW, I know ppl are saying that Fox is the one to blame...but I dont care how they treat their customers either...
Fox and Sony can buttf**k each other all the want, but I draw the line when they start trying to ass rape the customers...esp when the customer is me! - dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The PS3 isn't dead.. 99% of people who'll buy it haven't heard of this, and probobaly don't know what a rootkit is..
Anyway, I agree with whoever said that it's just screwing people who bought the DVD.. A downloaded version is far safer, as you can't (easily) put rootkits in AVI files.. But then again, most people wouldn't know about this
And finaly, why only in the german version (Aparantly)..
- Ben - replica, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@tom6a
IT WAS SONY. THIS IS IN GERMANY.
SONY SUCKS. - n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"If I knew how to use Linux, i'd be using that right now........ :("
Gurkinjar, go download Ubuntu, it's easier to install than XP. - Stevor1984, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I despise root kits I can see it now soon we'll have Root Sweeper or RootAware.....
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Fox is just as bad.
Their DVDs are really starting to suck. I got the Beavis and Butthead DVDs for xmas and you have to sit through about 10 mins of crap just to get to the menus. Damn things won't let you skip all the crap.
If it wasn't for the Simpsons, I wouldn't buy any of their ***** either. - EyeDye, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1New DVD copy protection found on German DVDs
