this site is a bit better. - porplem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I always just Google tasks when I need to know about them and that seems to work just fine.
- JAWS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no offense, but the processlibrary.com does appear better.
e.g. svchost on tasklist.org has about 8 entries. Most of which indicated that the svchost.exe is spyware or worm added and NOT the microsoft file that it is.
On processlibrary.com (and any number of other sites) it indiacates that it is a microsoft service host process and that it MAY be used by a few viruses, but that it is low risk. - lydon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Working help desk, one of the most useful things to have is a quick search setup in firefox to a site like this to check user's processes when they call in with a weird problem. (I use processlibrary, but this site looks good too)
- Orwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i usually just google it
- skeeto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think a simple google search is better for hunting down processes. You get more sites likes this, some better, some worse, to choose from and base a decision on. You can also flip the search over to Google Groups/Usenet to see if there are any discussions for the REAL suspicious ones.
- mixon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I normaly use http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
- mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Come on, that site is one big advertisement for Integrity Scanner. Not to mention it's not nearly as comprehensive as other ones listed in these comments.
- gnatinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0windows is good, if you know how to fortify it against constant assault
- george@CASE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had some inconsistencies with this site and with other sites' info, with tasklist.org oftentimes calling valid processes spyware or worm-related.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great list. I could find almost any task I have running on the list
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's missing some tasks like pg2.exe.
- ignun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found that well over half of what PC Integrity Scanner listed as viruses or spyware were actualy valid processes. I installed the program on an XP machine that had just had a clean install so there was nothing on it but XP and McAfee and according to this I had about 10-15 viruses or spyware processes,
- yaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very nice. Now I dont have to freakout whenever I see a process I dont know.
- Riffz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Type any process into google and you can find out what it is, and there is multiple sites like this. However I find the trusty ntfilemon app is the best for finding out whats going on in your system anyways.
- singleton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0googleing the process name always works for me too and several common processes are missing from that list
- htsolutions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a good tool that would be helpful for finding what processes are running adware/spyware/malware. It would follow along with an article that I wrote on removing spyware. It's located here http://www.homtechsol.com/Technology-Articles/spyware-adware/Removal.html
Article is a good rule of thumb to follow when you are removing malisious software.
Enjoy - PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@generalleoff: Hey, thanks for that link. I really digg it, hehe.
- CryingWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dugg this one but I have to agree with jaws on this one. Alot of my processes from Microsoft are virus trojan etc... If someone didn't take the time to investigate further and just erased said files he/she may be in for a restore.
- AuntySpam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys all realize that not only is this nothing but one enormous affiliate site, for "PC Integrity Scanner", which is sold through a site which only went up not even a *month* ago (http://www.pcintegrityscanner.com") (check each of the entries - they *all* recommend PC Integrity Scanner), but the *entire* contents of both the task lists and the "attach lists are nothing but rip-offs from other sites! Whomever put up this affiliate site simply copied and pasted from lists such at this:
http://www.pvcc.edu/helpdesk/viruses/viruses/mimail.htm
http://www.pvcc.edu/helpdesk/viruses/viruses/alcarys.htm
(It appears that many, if not all, entries came from the Piedmont Virginia Community College helpdesk pages. Interesting. Perhaps even more interesting, many of the specific pages cribbed from PVCC are no longer online (but they show up cached in Google). Curiouser and curiouser.)
In any event, you can take *any* line for *any* of those definitions on tasklist.org, and put it in quotes into Google, and what you're going to find is that they are word for word copies from lists of academic online lists of viruses and attachments.
Kissy kissy,
Aunty Spam
http://www.aunty-spam.com - ph3rny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its kinda unreliable...
there are many missing or incorrect ones
though i think its worth digging - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0PG2 = PeerGuardian 2 (Not spyware, adware, malicious)
- D4RKfantasy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Always raining down on front pagers.... Some of you guys suck man, seriously. Do you ***** call CNN and tell them to read off Fox news becuase you like it more? All of you idoits should just let the people be. Quite being dupe nazis
