- quilldriver1, on 04/09/2009, -0/+24Convenient timing since only U.S. intelligence officials have seen the code.
- chesterogilvie, on 04/09/2009, -0/+20I've been expecting the push for internet regulation for a long time. Obviously we need to resist any type of restrictions as vigorously as possible. I have a feeling there will be an "incident" in the future and we can't over-react and start passing garbage legislation like we usually do. The free exchange of ideas is too important.
- seanstuart, on 04/09/2009, -0/+15This has become a familiar refrain since 9-11. "You must give us unchecked secret power and trust us to use it only against mean scary people who are most certainly guilty of terrorism." And so many people just swallow it. It's disturbing how many people in the USA think that Bush's secret warrantless wiretapping program should go completely uninvestigated, saying that he probably kept us safe, so it's none of our business. Freedom is risky. And fewer people are willing to take that risk as they fall into the doublethink of hating and distrusting government and at the same time wanting it to do whatever it wants with no oversight or check whatsoever.
- tehowe, on 04/09/2009, -2/+17The fair and balanced media has rediscovered botnets and hackers. What next, EMP? Surely this technology is well within reach of the turrists and foreign agencies. All computers henceforth must be stored in a secret cloud-top Colorado mountain complex with ninja assassin guards.
- frcc, on 04/09/2009, -1/+15***** power grab.
- angel.wardriver, on 04/09/2009, -0/+12"They could show us, but then they'd have to kill us." Groan.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+11They talked about this 10 years ago.
Subways, dams, the electric grid was all on the internet, they said they were working to fix it.
If they haven't yet, they should get off their asses and do it, stop ***** talking. - Elranzer, on 04/09/2009, -0/+10I guess the Conficker "scare" wasn't enough to terrorize the US citizens into handing over complete Internet privacy control to the government. It's last true bastion for Freedom of the Press, no wonder the government wants to regulate it.
- Trigonometron, on 04/09/2009, -0/+8Agree, why the surprise in the media? Did they forget all of the scare-stories about this already? Did they not watch Die Hard 4? Apparently the govt is full of people that have no accountability. If it took me 10 yrs to do a job, I'd be fired.
- LeepII, on 04/09/2009, -1/+9The AT&T whistle blower has already clearly stated that the NSA copies EVERYTHING that goes over the internet in the USA. So the question is, how did they supposedly miss this attack? This sounds like booga booga to me.
- FFandMMfan, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6How convenient, a reason to give power to those who want to spy on the public. This is just another plot by the government to control the flow of information and restrict our rights. I think I may need to trade in my tinfoil hat for a tinfoil helmet, bad things are on the horizon.
- ricoboy24, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7They tell us privatizing Water and Electricity would make things run more efficiently. Instead, the qualities remained almost the same, except the price's became so outrageous that it almost became a luxury to have. Now they want to privatize the Internet.
NO ONE OWNS THE INTERNET. IT OWNS YOU
The internet is one of the things i would fight for. Wouldn't you?
Don't let the Secret Superpowers obtain the internet with their threats of "Terrorist attacks".
"National Security" ***** phrase is so oxymoronic, who the ***** is our nation really securing us from, ourselves? - SparkKnot, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5true true
- RevLoki, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5This is funny, because as soon as my boss heard about this, he made me download the entire wikipedia database and xml set and set it up on WAMP on his laptop for him. "Just in case the grid goes down." This was after an hour long conversation involving me calling him insane and questioning the fact that he has 100k rounds of ammo, as well as me asking him repeatedly why he lets stuff like this rent space in his head.
Proof or STFU: http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/1571/prooforstfu2 ... - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6You know I'm no NSA fan... but anything that takes any amount of power away from the DHS is a good thing. Obama should have dissolved the DHS as soon as he took office. also the DHS has the same warrantless abilities as the DHS. wtf is the point of this stupid artice aside from saying "hey look Washington bureaucrats are having a pissing match."
- RevLoki, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5He'll be happy because then he'd be e-famous or some garbage.
- dirtpoorchris, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5As long as the internet never gets filtered and shut down the golden age will eventually come. People like to fix things and make them right. They just need to know about them first.
- nirvanix, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5Yes the world is full of big bad monsters, but the government will protect us! It might cost you a little somethin' though ;-)
- buckrogers1965, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4And these computers are on a publicly accessible network for what reason?
Any computer with any control over anything real should, such as a drug pump, or a pace maker, or a power plant should not be connected to the Internet. Ever.
Simple solution to security for these computers. Don't put them on the Internet.
There, I fixed it. For free. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5Clearly, this is Bush's fault.
- ricoboy24, on 04/10/2009, -0/+4I meant to say nationalized. I guess I was caught up in my own words.
But the internet was made by people for people. The companies only provide your connection. They don't control whats on the web. - TedTschopp, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Have you ever read an article in the news that was about your home town or about a piece of science or technology that you work on? How often have they gotten it right? How often have they understood all the details. How often has it been pure BS aimed at grabbing attention?
Then again, this article could be the excpetion, and the sky could be falling and the world could be at an end. Or perhaps there is an agenda to generate fear. - NodOfficer, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Ninja assassin guards sound pretty cool.
- fossilnews, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3There's an absolutely fantastic Frontline episode on this subject. Unfortunately, I don't think you can view it online anymore.
- Dumbledorito, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4FTA: "Sadly, this new installment doesn't contain the kind of juicy details that made the previous one so easy to debunk. In fact, it contains almost no details at all."
I look forward to the not-too-distant day when the WSJ is sold alongside such prestigious publications as the National Inquirer in my local checkout aisle. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Maybe it wasn't the Chinese.....
Maybe it was the next wave of Transformers coming to a theater near you.
You saw what they did last time - casek, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3problem, reaction, solution.
are we going to see another self inflicted wound to help those in power gain even more power? - alappat1, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3first of all, privatizing refers to companies taking over government organizations, not the other way around.
second, the internet is already supplied by private companies - shrewd1983, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Yep, put the government in control of the internet, sounds like a good idea.
- diggydougie, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3Let them help and advise. But under no circumstances let them control the switch.
- CaptOblivious, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Rules against connecting critical infrastructure to the internet don't need to be "upgraded" they need to be followed, or people need to be fired.
Now there's a man of high caliber! - inactive, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Its amazing to watch how easily it will be for a few ***** to completely take over America and send you lot back 300 years. With all this paranoia and government control, excuses for more control and control of the controllers, you guys are all too soon ***** up. No checks, no oversight, no budget limits, no accounting...
Its like waving the white flag with "here ***** me up now".... - alappat1, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1nationalization of electricity and water wouldn't be too bad of an idea... if the entire concept of supergrids, and wide spread renewable energy were to pick up; otherwise the hodgepodge nature of the grid will result in choke points, and lack of redundancies.
Also, provided that laws are enacted specifically protecting net neutrality and banning any sort of censorship for any reason, then i don't see a problem with nationalizing internet, especially because of the price gouging going on by certain ISP's.
But that will never happen in real life because the big corporations will control it for the for-seeable future. - Feldon, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1Bandwidth caps, pirates bay trial and now the i don.t know what to think is worse that the NSA is in charge of the power grid or that China and Russia hacked into it so easy.
- LonesomeFighter, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1maybe they did fix it and now need to upgrade? technology is one of those things that is constantly changing and security devices need to be constantly improved
- dever, on 04/09/2009, -3/+4Treat the WSJ just as you would Fox News, same company, different branch. Ruperts media machines are churning the fear big time right now.
Move along, nothing rational to see here... - whoreable, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1Sam Fisher could read my email any time.
- merky1, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1Dissolving DHS is stupid.
Re-purposing DHS would make more sense. The original goal was to have all the multiple field agencies operating off of one playbook, one set of rules. Unfortunately, DHS was never empowered to do this, and politics prevented the necessary shifts of power. So now we have fractured agencies all operating separately, with an extra layer of bureaucracy added for efficiency. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2Dude... you missed a redaction.
your buddy is going to be pissed when he gets a billion emails to his gmail account. - agent13x, on 04/10/2009, -0/+0NSA is part of the Department of Defense. Getting rid of the DHS as you requested will only abolish the TSA and various border protection agencies. Hardly changing anything with intelligence and wiretapping.
