- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is it just me, or is this article so poorly written that it makes no sense at all. I don't get it: Who's "extorting" him? Why haven't we heard "his/their" side? How exactly does one "hijack" a podcast?
- burnside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh yeah, because ranting and raving equals publicity which equals more listeners.
Its also part of the problem with society these days, people would rather apportion blame and be negative rather than think of a solution.
Mini rant over. - sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is one thing one can reproach apple - if they want to create a huge listing of Podcasts, they should be more in touch with the authors...
- elfguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Basically any time a new podcast directory service opens, anyone can list someone else's podcast and link their own site. This is why it can be done. New directories should instead use reliable existing sources to get the proper links
- antifuse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So... is the "hijacker" also hosting the guy's podcasts there? I'm not sure what the problem is here...
- thotpoizn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 The problem here is simple: party A hosts a nifty (or crappy or whatever) podcast. party B links to it, and takes pains to make sure THEIR link is more widely circulated than the original. If the podcast then becomes popular, the extortion can begin. And since it costs nothing to link to as many casts as you like, if you jack enough of them you are eventually bound to hit pay dirt.
Seems to me that a few of us should dig around and verify whether this is really is just another case of scumbag Internet predation. If it is, it may be time to mobilize... Surely we can come up with another mob mentality reaction that will make this business model unprofitable... *wicked grin, gleeful rubbing of hands...*
On an unrelated side note: "Digginated"? Don't just say "no that sucks," float a better alternative. Anything, I'm not sure it even matters WHAT anymore, but please for the love of God can't we pick a name for the effect?!? Anything but "digg-dugged"!!!! - link470, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL good luck getting your money hijacker.
- burnside, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heard this on daily source code this morning, just a crazy idea, but why not ask the listeners in the next podcast to change their feed?
- starman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm confused also. So one web site points to the MP3 files....so what? Are the MP3 files modified in any way? THe article is very poorly written because I don't understand exactly what the problem is.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thotpoizn, I think I'm a fan of dig-dugged. (man I loved that game) or how about just dugged. "That website was scamming lots of people, and then it got do dugged"
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can't digg hackers come up with a way to ***** this squatter?
- Einstein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe I'm not seeing something clearly, but if the entire reason this guys podcast is so popular to begin with is because this guy was promoting it thru iTunes and Yahoo, then I don't see why he should be compensated...
I don't see what this guy has done as being wrong, or "HiJacking" a podcast. What he did is no different that you building a website that hosts files to download, and then advertising the fact that you have those specific files for download thru search engines, etc. (Ie: HotFiles.com, Download.com, etc). - RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's not news when padfiles get hijacked, but it is when it happens to some selfabsorbed podcaster?, pfff
- mesoed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Podcast Pickle was also hijacked in the same fashion last weekend. Could be the same folks...
- thotpoizn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 *shrug* Well, ninjaboy, If the people want digg-dugged... I'll just be happier when there's a single consistent term that everyone recognizes. :)
Einstein - as far as this "jacking" is concerned, we may have to agree to disagree. The advertising is not what makes a podcast popular - it is the content. All the marketing in the world won't make a suck-ass program popular. Although, in retrospect, Microsoft may prove to be the proof of my flawed logic...
In any case, it would appear that subterfuge and deception is being used to extort money that 'party B' is not entitled to. And whether or not the RSS feed can be relocated, and/or all the search engines tracked down and redirected to the correct link - that's beside the point. What's being done is wrong, as a matter of principle - my $0.02, they should get roasted for it. But then I always was rather a bloodthirsty bastard... :D - garf12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0everyone should give the podcastkeyword owner a call. Here is the whois info. He just answered for me.

http://www.urbancoffee.net/ - unsignedpodcast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just interviewed Mr. Lambert, the gentleman being accused of doing this, and he has some very interesting things to say. In fact, every single post that I have seen to date has been wrong. your not getting the whole story as some have intelligently posted before me.
The interview is at www.unsignedpodcastnetwork.com
Also, I break it down somewhat in my blog.

Very interesting how anything the press has said is not true. - NickD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Vegan podcast guy is a n00b.
All he had to do was do a show where he announces his new feed address, have both running for a week or two, and then have just an announcement at the old feed of the new address as the only file in the feed.
Instead, he freaked out, had PodKeyWords.com yank the feed, and then all of listeners got cut off. When the guy from Vegan.com wanted the guy from PodKeyWords.com to make him a custom solution, (which would not be necessary if he had only followed the instructions above) and charge him for the the coding he would need to do .PodKeyWords.com is sort of like Odeo, except you can subscribe with keywords or tags. Vegan.com guy should have submitted his feed to all of the directories early on so that the PodKeyWords.com feed would not get spidered more, and that is exactly what happened. Yahoo and Apple picked up the PodKeyWords.com feed because it was more popular than his own. - Permanent4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like he's trying to hijack Engadget's podcast feed as well. Maybe Peter Rojas and Jason Calcanis should call in the AOL legal team to deal with this guy...
- Safe97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lisen to TWIT 22 with kevin rose, he predicted this
- npiv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"why a vegan podcast?"
American society of Beef is behind it - whiznat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0definitely not cool. If you would like to help, go over to www.podkeyword.com, click contact, and write the hijacker a little note telling him that he stinks and you will not use his service ever.
- redpoint73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The hijackers are clearly meat eaters. Erik Marcus should just retaliate and hold their meat for ransom.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ROFL
- LittleOni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's pretty *****...

- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow, Digg users don't mess around. Piss one of em off and all your contact info is in front of thousands of viewers.

- link470, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0burnside's still thinking, anyone else?
- ErifNeerg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0sonic84, my thoughts exactly
- syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0not cool
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ok, it seems like if he made finding his feed easier on his own website, then this wouldn't be much of a problem. Also, this seems more like a problem with Yahoo's user identification then any sort of unique problem associated with podcasting.
- borb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0AAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
- jackmaninov, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0why a vegan podcast? You'd think something higher profile would be the target of this kind of activity...
- Sonic84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0could this be a publicity stunt?

~mario - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0What a bunch of wankers.
- mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0eweek.com is now on my sh*t list for the java script message box asking me to complete a survey in which the cancel button actually goes right ahead in loading the survey anyway. For a site that is obviously 80% advertising and rubbish lists, it was already on skating thin ice. No great loss...
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Oh well. One less vegan...
