- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Well, that's good. Too bad we can't do anything about Sony's evil EULA.
From Boingboing, Sony's EULA states that:
"1. If your house gets burgled, you have to delete all your music from your laptop when you get home. That's because the EULA says that your rights to any copies terminate as soon as you no longer possess the original CD.
2. You can't keep your music on any computers at work. The EULA only gives you the right to put copies on a "personal home computer system owned by you."
3. If you move out of the country, you have to delete all your music. The EULA specifically forbids "export" outside the country where you reside.
4. You must install any and all updates, or else lose the music on your computer. The EULA immediately terminates if you fail to install any update. No more holding out on those hobble-ware downgrades masquerading as updates.
5. Sony-BMG can install and use backdoors in the copy protection software or media player to "enforce their rights" against you, at any time, without notice. And Sony-BMG disclaims any liability if this "self help" crashes your computer, exposes you to security risks, or any other harm.
6. The EULA says Sony-BMG will never be liable to you for more than $5.00. That's right, no matter what happens, you can't even get back what you paid for the CD.
7. If you file for bankruptcy, you have to delete all the music on your computer. Seriously.
8. You have no right to transfer the music on your computer, even along with the original CD.
9. Forget about using the music as a soundtrack for your latest family photo slideshow, or mash-ups, or sampling. The EULA forbids changing, altering, or make derivative works from the music on your computer."
God, Sony sucks. - mcfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm glad to see Pest Patrol will root out Sony's root kit. That's a nasty thing to do to paying customers who have bought your CD's!
"Thank you Sir. Here is your 'Talk Talk' CD. Don't forget to play it on your computer so that Sony can spy on you and break your computer if you try to remove the cloaked software. Have a nice day." - unknownsoldier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3nads is a commonly used term... at least here in Australia. It means balls. as in "OUUUCH HE JUST HIT ME IN THE NADS"
- rippedcap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great work CA. Here's hoping all of the other providers follow suit. I wonder when MS Anti-Spyware will include this?
- heartless_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great news to hear! I hate how Sony is playing it off like "Most don't even know what a rootkit is so why do they care?"
Its like telling people... hackers use *insert l33t tacking term*, but you don't know what it is so you shouldn't care about it. - Oriole27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pest Patrol rules. That and Spysweeper are the spyware utility kings.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Excellent! The more the public hears about this the better, and this will definitely help get the word out.
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Its like telling people... hackers use *insert l33t tacking term*, but you don't know what it is so you shouldn't care about it."
exactly...I'd guess around 95% of people who have had their identity stolen (online) don't know how the hacker got their info...but something tells me they still care...
If I wasn't broke...I would purchase this software, provided they stand up to sony when the lawyers come-a-callin'! - dcarpenter85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those of you with modded xbox's, pop the sony CD into your xbox, FTP into your xbox and rip the songs... then laugh at sony and never buy their cd's again.
- aphextwin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if other sony products do this. I have a sony program called Acid that I now fear may have this or another kind of rootkit. It does try to access the internet (presumably to try and get more samples or look for updates) but I have all access to the internet disable for it. But I just wonder.
- copperkidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using PestPatrol for a couple of years now and love it. This is awesome! Go CA!
Just updated my defs and confirmed that it's in there. - avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3BAH!! I own a Mac.... I think i will just sit here and be smug..
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BRAAAAVO.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent - now even the people who don't know or care but still use PestPatrol (a large number) will be protected. Hopefully Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy will follow suit, so those cheap bastards like myself will get protection. But I guess I don't need protection if I don't buy CDs anyway...
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"BAH!! I own a Mac.... I think i will just sit here and be smug.."
http://digg.com/apple/Sony_DRM_affecting_Macs - jgstew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The thing that is really silly is that this DRM software sony used is only going to affect those that know the least of how to get rid of it or deal with it. Those who are in the know and would be more likely to copy things are going to know how to get around the protection. and another thing about it is, who uses CD's as is any more? i listen to my mp3 player, and in my car... which i burn in mp3 format as well, and if i didnt, i wouldnt put an original in my car, it would not survive.
- blackmesa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0PestPatrol is a good start.
Napalm would be an even better end. :) - Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone needs to find the nads to drop 18 million gallons of nads on the Sony corporate offices.
- covaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is awesome, we actually just picked up CA as a new vendor of SMB products this week! Nice to see a new vendor doing things right.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL! CA PWNED!
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Although Sony can sue American based anti-* software companies, remember one thing. Spybot.
Oh yeah, Ad-Aware. - Kuth678, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope webroot spysweeper follows suit. I use their enteprise product on the computers at work.
- BETA7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its about time.... ^^
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nads is also a hair removal wax type kit which is also from Australia...
- laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"BAH!! I own a Mac.... I think i will just sit here and be smug.."
It's funny because everyone is fighting over real estate on windows machines ... but nobody cares about macs. =P - znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Congrats to PestPatrol and CA.. dugg!
- sandinshoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"the word 'nads'is not in the dictionary"
Googled nads...one entry: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nads
PestPatrol is looking good. - swimsporty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great news, I just have a question...
Does this mean that we have to go buy a new program of PestPatrol? Because I have PestPatrol and run it, it is finding the Sony Rootkits but won't delete them any more than another program. - republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The best thing to do is stop buying Sony cds.
- mckennage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fight back! See http://henage.net/dan/security/sony-rootkit.html for ideas.
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been using pest patrol for about 3 years now (long before Computer Associates took it over)... Most certainly the most comprehensive anti-spyware product on the market. That program consistently detects more and successfully treats more spys than most of the other major players in the market - and yes I've cleaned about a million computers. I'm not surprised at all they are the first to detect / remove the Sony rootkit. Spybot isn't a bad backup to have around though for verification...
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha! that's right... suck it sony
- spericki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dugg this purely for the use of the word "nads".
- brave26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love how my spyware/DRM/consumer rights story is now a nads thread. You've made my first contribution a memorable one, Diggers.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone should find Sony CEO's phone number :)
- petrax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem is much bigger then just Sony/BMG the problem is with the corporate music industry itself. While Computer Associates software identifying and removing Sony's Root-Kit DRM software is certainly needed, it's not the end. Customers can boycott all Sony products in mass worldwide, and it would have little impact on Sony. What needs to happen, needs to happen from within the industry. Artists, Producers and Writers need to stop rewarding the big labels by renewing their contracts and/or giving them product to sell (recording and distribution) with all recording industry companies like Sony/BMG. It is very hard for a company to grow it's profits if they can not attract new talent and if their big name talent as moved on and left them behind. As long as the Artists do nothing and give the industry product to sell, Sony/BMG and the rest of the industry will not change.
Artist such as U2, Sting, Sheryl Crow and Rod Stewart no longer need a record company to sell millions of albums, the other few hundred or so, big to moderate named artists typical are at a point where they are on or developing their own label anyway. The big name Recoding Company then just becomes their distributor, such as Madonna's Maverick label. These Artist owned small labels, operate inside the big labels, these small artist owned labels are the key to breaking up the recording industry. These small labels need to become truly independent from the major label. These days the only artists that make any money, at all, from the sells of their own CDs and MP3 are independent artists.
I have not purchased a CD from an artist signed to a major label in over 5 years. There is so many great independent artists such as Gypsy Soul, Croc_Shop.sea and so many, many more that I could never name them all. I have not missed anything in talent, entertainment or quality of the performance for my money, in most respects all of the independent artist's CDs I have purchased over the years is much better then the artist signed to major label contracts, as a bonus must independent artist charge less for their CDs too.
My take on the whole thing is simple. Stop buying products by any artist who is released or distributed by a major Recording Company (no CDs, DVDs, Concerts, T-shirts, TV/Radio broadcasts, Movies, Magazines or anything else). By all means feel free to write/post/blog your feeling about it too. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yay for CA!
Heh. That rhymes. - zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I used WinPatrol! I don't know if it will detect sony root kit but I have this installed on this computer and work great.
I have no Anti Virus, Firewall or any other protection software then WinPatrol it self. I have 2 Teen age kids and their friends use it all the time, visiting websites and trying out programs etc. For a first time in over a year, I ran a spy ware scan on this machine and Only thing I found was some stupid cookies and Viewpoint Tool bar thingy. I also install this software on other people that keep getting hijacked, they have tried other spy software's and never worked until WinPatrol got installed. Only thing is i won't disable and remove the software for you, you'll have to do that manually where you can learn a thing or two about spy ware etc. But one you remove all the process and start up files you'll be safe. Other thing I like is their concept is very simple and doesn't conflict with any program you try to install or use.
- designbydave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0awesome, glad to see this
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0^LOL
