- reeder, on 12/18/2007, -1/+47Yah right. If I "accidentally" put a rootkit on your computer, I'm going to jail. Sony does it, and zip. Does that make sense to anyone?
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -0/+25Further proof the DMCA is worth less than the toilet tissue it was written on
- Phantizen, on 12/18/2007, -2/+25Katana? Torvalds is Scandinavian! You got your Pirates and Ninjas mixed up!
- Waiting2awake, on 12/18/2007, -2/+24It makes perfect sense, as long as you are not in a free country. Which, not to burst your bubble.....
- MaynardJK, on 12/18/2007, -2/+15"Did Sony make an honest mistake or take a calculated risk?"
Is there really anyone stupid enough to think it was an honest mistake? I guess I shouldn't underestimate the die-hard Sony fanboys.
Many of my friends and I have completely stopped buying anything from Sony after this incident. We are all early adopters with a lot of expendable income. I would imagine they have lost tens of thousands of dollars just from my social circle alone. It is too bad that there is no way to know the total financial impact of the situation. Maybe these ***** would actually pay attention to what we want if they knew what they are losing from stunts like these. - canthraxp, on 12/18/2007, -6/+19I can only hopes this disasters become even more frequent so big companies, like sony, will ditch this ***** away... Or Linus Torvalds using a Katana to beat the crap out of them would work too.
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -0/+13funny thing is because of BMG, every Sony employee had to go through an ethics course.
- GeekSwag, on 12/18/2007, -1/+13Or perhaps Richard Stallman?
http://www.xkcd.com/344/ - johnnall, on 12/18/2007, -0/+9If you had sucked as much congressional ***** as Sony/The recording industry has it would make perfect sense.
- Dipster, on 12/18/2007, -1/+9Don't forget, Sony has created other forms of DRM, such as SecuRom.
- pintomp3, on 12/18/2007, -0/+8corporate personhood - all of the rights, none of the responsibilities.
- Ryosen, on 12/18/2007, -1/+7An "honest mistake"? Please, who do you think you're trying to delude? Sony has zero regard for the consumer. They lead both the RIAA and MPAA in their campaign of terror. They've demonstrated time and again their distaste for honest, money-paying people and they are constantly trying to push new ways to make us feel like criminals based on the sole fact that we actually went out and bought their product.
Various different consumer markets have cast away the facade that they like their customers and are now actively acting in manners that are distasteful, distrustful, offensive and, in the case of the rootkit, dangerous. And Sony is leading the charge. - oggb4mp3, on 12/18/2007, -1/+7If you had actually read the paper behind the article, you would know that there were at least three known exploits released into the wild that took advantage of this.
Besides, we all know that anybody that has to proclaim they are not a fanboy surely is one. - ontain, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6The Rootkit installed if you played the cd on a computer even if you don't rip it.
your ignorance of being mistreated doesn't mean your aren't being mistreated. - ubuwalker31, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6Funny, because I have felt like criminal trying to legally rip my CD to my computer so I could listen to music on my Ipod and having to download a codec to legally watch DVDs on Linux. Funny how NOT BEING A CRIMINAL doesn't keep me from feeling like one, when idiots like you don't understand my right to FAIR USE.
- phoomp, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5Yes
- whyufail, on 12/18/2007, -1/+6Sony? Exploiting their customers? Nahhhhh, that doesn't sound like them...
- canthraxp, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5Yeah.. I should've said Stallman
http://www.gnu.org/people/jag/rms-with-katana/100_ ... - alaceiffel, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5i stopped buying completely! i was never infected with the rootkit problem cuz i didn't listen to any of the music they put that on (most of it was pretty bad). but, to this day, i still refuse to purchase anything from them. xbox instead of ps3, panasonic|hitachi|samsung instead of sony for tv's, dvd players, etc.
- MaynardJK, on 12/18/2007, -0/+4Yeah, why would anyone need to rip a cd? It isn't like you would need to do that to use it with your ipod or anything.
- Sinudeity, on 12/18/2007, -2/+6Fight back! Pirate more!
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -0/+4 I also never cared about their products and never bought their *cough* "music"...
After the rootkit incident,I'd never even buy a paper clip from that company. - sexybobo, on 12/18/2007, -0/+4So Steve Jobs as DISNEY's largest individual shareholder. Is one of the main people behind the MPAA?
- oggb4mp3, on 12/18/2007, -1/+5I didn't say the article, I said "the paper behind the article." You know, the one the article was based on.
- beatbox360, on 12/18/2007, -0/+4Actually, that would make a lot of sense. Steve Jobs stands to lose a lot of money if pirates pirate Pirates(otC).
- oggb4mp3, on 12/18/2007, -1/+5Since this has happened, I have purchased at least an LCD TV, digital video cam, 2 digital cameras, mp3 players, 2 laptop computers. All-in-all about $10,000 worth of equipment, none of it Sony. The funny thing is that most of my previous purchased equipment, VCR, DVD Player, component stereo, pretty much every piece of electronic equipment I owned was Sony.
Now add in all the stuff my mother and brother have purchased based on my recommendations. So let's say 10,000 people in the US influence on average $10,000 of electronics purchases. It only totals $100,000,000, so I am sure they didn't notice.
This obviously hurt Sony at least a little, but remember, it's probably also overshadowed by the PS3 debacle and the billions being thrown down that drain. I still look at the back of every CD I buy and if it says Sony, I put it down and walk away. - MaynardJK, on 12/18/2007, -2/+5I don't know why I am even bothering to reply. You are a ***** idiot. I'm also calling ***** on the "not a fanboy" remark if you are ok with what they did.
I suppose you would be fine with me breaking into your house once in awhile to have a look around and make sure you aren't doing anything shady. Don't worry, I won't steal or break anything. I might leave your door unlocked while you go to work though. Where do you live? - phoomp, on 12/18/2007, -0/+3One license per person? I think they're aiming for one license per device.
- pigfister, on 12/18/2007, -4/+7sony are at the front of the pro DRM lobby locking down content until they destroy the second hand market and make sure that its 1 licence per person!
THE RIAA SOUNDEXCHANGE ARE: SONY, UNIVERSAL , WARNER GROUP, EMI.
THE MPAA ARE: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX. - rideagain, on 12/18/2007, -1/+3Boycott Sony!
- grumpyrain, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2@corn
I am not a pro piracy retard. I am more than happy for my PC to be audited for both software and media violations. You however are an talking out of your arse. You talk about drive by rootkit installations as if they were putting an icon on your desktop or installing a link in your IE favorites. It is clear that you have no understanding of the implications of a rootkit. Once installed, you have no confidence that other rootkits could not have used this rootkit to cloak.
The exploits are real, as you would have seen if you had bothered doing 10 seconds research.
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/breplibot_b.shtml - pigfister, on 12/18/2007, -5/+7its sony that is pushing DRM even further down our throats than any other company!
THE RIAA SOUNDEXCHANGE ARE: SONY, UNIVERSAL , WARNER GROUP, EMI.
THE MPAA ARE: SONY, UNIVERSAL, WARNER GROUP, DISNEY, PARAMOUNT, FOX. - pintomp3, on 12/18/2007, -1/+3reminds me of the "calculated risk" ford took with the pinto.
- joelito, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2Would a Cutlass be more appropriate?
Or perhaps a Claymore? - popstop785, on 12/18/2007, -4/+5First they stick a rootkit on CDs. Strike one.
They stick a rootkit on their lame finger reader usb drives. Strike two.
They then come up with the lame idea of Home for the PS3. Strike three.
Sony is on my boycott list. Like hell if they ever get any money from me. - whyufail, on 12/18/2007, -2/+3Whats that cornswalled? All I could hear was a series of BAWWW from your direction.
- LeeSoong, on 12/18/2007, -2/+3Sony BMG should have lost their incorporation and have had all their assets sold off.
Ruining customers computers and compromising their security is an inexcusable act of electronic warfare, and should receive the harshest punishment possible - termination of the corporation. - inactive, on 12/18/2007, -1/+2You're not supposed to ***** where you eat.
- IllBeBack, on 12/18/2007, -1/+2FTA: "One security and privacy threats intruded upon the snow and safety, consumers reacted with unexpectedly intense indignation."
Speak English much? - Genma, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1sure, lets contribute to their investments so they can ***** ours up! because it's completely fair to pay $50 and support developers just to receive a shiny plastic coaster that doesn't have functioning content! and as a bonus they'll break your cd burner for you! want to put it on your hd and emulate legally purchased media? ***** that, every gamer needs to be a dj too! because, you know, it's fair to let publishers aka _investors_ ***** up developers' titles and drag their names through the mud, all in the name of profit. developers release patches to strip drm not because it doesn't work, no no, it's because they want to protect their investments.
- dhughes, on 12/18/2007, -1/+2 Sony must have lawyers review every letter and bit of any product released and this rootkit's effect was not considered a problem before release? Bull.
If such things slip past Sony's legal team they have bigger problems than the rootkit disaster. - Ryosen, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1>>Is cornswalled being offensive?
No, just ignorant. - inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1"Sony does it, and zip."
The $150 million they had to pay out is not zip. - mobling, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1I am simply amazed at people. We act like we are sheep with no options in the world. One of the thing I enjoy in life is that of choice. I used to purchase Sony electronics because I believed they were a cut above the rest. Ahh, I was like grasshopper with little knowledge. I remain aghast at the behavior of Sony and I made a promise to myself that I would no longer purchase anything from them and I have held out since. I actually enjoy walking down the aisles taking in all the shiny beautifully designed packages from Sony. I like the looks of their computers and monitors and much of their other wares offered for sale. The real bonus comes into play knowing I am not going to buy their products today, tomorrow, or ever again. I am not a sheep and I do hold Sony accountable for their actions. We are the consumers. We make or break entire countries and Sony had better understand this fact.
- anillop, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Cutlass - Yes
Claymore - No - browntiger, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2It was round one!
Sony playing round two with same nasty DRM in blueray disc players. Entire design is to prohibit consumers from accessing any data on BD discs.
- freddo, on 12/18/2007, -3/+4Why?
- 1st, i use linux :: not affected by it.
- 2nd, when i use windows autoruns are disabled :: not affected by it.
- 3rd, when i rip a cd, i use a biscuit pc running linux connected to my main server :: not affected by it.
- 4th, if i ever happen to download the music, there's no copy-protection :: not affected by it.
for all my uses, i just don't give a ***** about how the cd is protected. It's not about linux vs windows, even on windows sony wasn't a threat to my computers. BUT it's a threat to my wallet, because when i buy those cds, i pay for their f*cking protection. Not only I pay for something to prevent OTHERS to copy it, but I pay to prevent myself of copying it for my own use. Worse, I pay for a quite ineffective protection, is that how Sony use my money?!
And, if sony ask the question: why would i need to copy it for my own use? Here's the answer:
- 1st, i don't need a huge cd case. YOU are wasting MY space. This goes to the trash.
- 2nd, i don't need the stupid papers that come with your cd with lyrics that are available on your site, or on others.
- 3rd, with a DVD i don't need the stupid intro with DO NOT COPY, most copied movies don't have it anyway, i bought it, could you let my testicles have a rest?
- 4th, with a DVD i don't give a ***** about the bonuses, or the making-off, i bought it for the MOVIE, remember? It's not about value added products. SELL the bonuses, the making off, and the wallpaper showing the ass hole of your director. I DO NOT WANT THOSE. And my guess is that very few peoples want it either.
What do i do, in general:
For a cd, i throw away the plastic case, the papers that come with it, keep the cd in a shoe box after copying the songs to mp3.
For a dvd, i throw in my trash: the plastic case, bonuses dvd that may come with it, all the papers, and when i made a divx of it, the original dvd fly into a shoe box.
Please, for the sake of god, try to sell your stuff to countries in development (to be politically correct), but not to your own country, to your own childs. I wouldn't mind if you succeeded in manipulating poor peoples in other countries, but please leave us, childs of America, alone. We do not need you! - inactive, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Um, the rootkit on the finger drives was to protect the users of the fingerprint drives.
And Home is optional, unobtrusive, and many people are looking forward to it.
You have one valid complaint, the rest is you grasping at straws. Especially with home. - inactive, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1God forbid they try to protect game developer's or themselves from piracy.
Shame on them for trying to protect their investments. - erickssm, on 12/18/2007, -4/+4Its to the point where I would rather steal music them pay for it. I feel it is more ethical to steal from the industry then it is to give the industry anymore $ it can use to fight unjustified court battles. The only way I get music is if I can buy it right off the artists website.
