Well, I've been doing that to bike locks for years. but I never thought it had a tech use. always use laser cut locks. the keys that have the crop circle looking dents in them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow, just wow!
- Funman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Confirmed!!!
I just opned the kensington lock here at work.
It's like picking a real lock, he makes it look very easy however it just takes practice. You have to feel when each tumbler breaks.. - wormdrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yea, it tends to catch on the indented part of the cirle area on the lock. Would appreciate more detail on this if it is indeed supposed to work. I've rolled it both ways around the pen and tried two diffent gauges of cardboard, including the TP roll. That's about as much time as I'll put into this, lol.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+02-0 advantage hoax, hey be gentle is it's first time :)
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems like a 3-0 and K.O. to this hoax.
- wormdrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Second attempt, same. 3rd attempt with thinner piece (but still very firm) and same results.
Bummer. - bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey any field tests are appreciate it.
- wormdrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>:|
Maybe my company just buys crappy toilet paper rolls, but even being uber gentle, the "tool" starts to fray and shred.
Good luck eveyone else who tries! - wormdrink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried it, have one at a desk next to me at work. It tore the cardboard to shreads.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok is 1-0 advantage hoax
- Funman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes wormdrink sounds like you have weak rolls.. The ones here at work are tough cardboard. So thick it almost does not fit into the lock circle
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahah crimson thats hella funny
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^LMAO.
Ok seems this thing is alive any other takers, the ones here are the combination ones :(. - GIGO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So funny...thanks I needed a good laugh ;p
- Funman1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So it worked for you too crimson?? SWEETT
- gunnmjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've heard about this, but have only seen videos about the pen trick. I tried the pen on my lock, it didn't work. maybe this will.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL...AWESOMW
- andrew_y, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like a very intersting find. glad i bought the # code one, then!
- dragonflight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, makes me glad I never bought a Kensington lock (or any lock for that matter!)
- omega2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I lost the key to my kensington cable lock and remembered having seen this video and tried it. It took me 4 or 5 attempts but I got it to work with one of those cardboard envelopes that they mail CDs in, scotch tape, and a wood pencil.
- AVGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is it about Dutchman sticking things in to holes....
- ZarZax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the guy talking about it was worth it for me!
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mirror: http://www.videogamepirate.com/kensington623.wmv
- hamster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guess I'll wait a bit with buying a kensington lock then :p
- loudman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got it to work with a dark brown manila folder thinger.so, most locks cant be opened this way. with the kensington, you can apply pressure as needed by hand to actually turn the lock. Doesn't take much torque. Embedded stiff locks that are hard to turn with a key just won't go with cardboard. I'm sure somebody knows how..
- dlprager, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No way this works ... at least not the way the guy shows in the video. If you watch carefully at the end, you can see his little contraption slips out for a second and it is ratty as all get out. He sticks it back in, wiggles it and then removed the lock. You need to turn this lock clockwise 45 degrees and he never ever does it ... he wiggles it and then pulls the lock away. I can make a piece of toilet paper roll or manila folder push the ball bearings in, but I can't get the ball bearings to make an impression on either one of these to the extent that I can turn them and open the lock
- Dirtydog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0brilliance pure brilliance.. I am trying this on the laptop at work.
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hah, thats great. i only feel safe with an expensive 5 digit lock. 3's can be done in under 5 minutes, hackaday posted about a HD based lock picker, there was the kryptonite thing, and now this. Crazy crazy stuff

http://www.cidrs.org/about/program.aspx - exxpand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just lost my kensington keys. Thanks for all the tips posted here. I used the barrel of an ink pen, jammed it into the kensigton microsaver lock, and in under 5 minutes my powerbook was liberated from the newest line of kensington locks. Yeah the cable locks are effective to keep your laptop or powerbook from being swiped off your desk while you bending over to pick up the pencil you just dropped. But if you leave it unattended for more than 5 minutes, any untrained hack like myself can lift your powerbook or laptop.
- CyclonicK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The best part about this is that at ALL the DELL KIOSKS, all of the laptops use this lock. I used to work @ one.
- rustymyers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Checked out my kensignton rip off lock, no go so far. Just rips the cardboard up.
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good deal
- scingram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Worked just fine here, had a co-worker that lost his key. Poped right open within 3 tries.
- geofas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Success on my end too. It took me 5 attempts, ie. five mini cardboard rolls.
- cdznuts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn you guyz are good it only takes 30 sec. with a skinny long flat head just tried it because i accidently changed code
- fredpeters, on 02/14/2008, -2/+1Nice trick
