- Ontarian, on 01/27/2009, -1/+41 dugg for "This really is rocket science, after all."
- kamaaina, on 01/27/2009, -10/+40Yeah, i'm with the rest of you. Having the most powerful military in the world sucks.
/s - arlok789, on 01/27/2009, -2/+24This technology would be awesome if we could apply it to go carts.
- archer75, on 01/27/2009, -2/+23defense contracts create jobs. So yes, it's just what we need.
- jotux, on 01/27/2009, -2/+21Flying a flag on your ***** truck, YEAH!
- buddypriefert, on 01/27/2009, -14/+32With all the negative comments against the US Navy, you'd be suprised that these are often the same people who play shootem up games in their free time.
- jnav121, on 01/27/2009, -8/+25us liberals know that no one ever uses violence, therefore we can throw all our guns away and missiles and stuff!
we don't need a military!
/s - JimMayJr, on 08/06/2009, -3/+18You do realize that defense contractors contribute to the economy...
- trejrco, on 01/27/2009, -3/+15Actually, I think something like 95% of us still have jobs.
And if you specifically mean Dig readers, who tend to be more technical, which in turn tend to have lower unemployment, the number is probably closer to 97+%. - nascentia, on 01/27/2009, -5/+14I realize the economy is in the *****, but we do need to keep focusing on other things, military included, otherwise it can be the troops that suffer.
To use a recent example, military budget cuts and decommissioning of equipment (specifically, our naval refueling ships) led our ships to use refueling stations in hostile nations. Such as Yemen. Does anybody remember what happened to the USS Cole in Yemen?
While this isn't the exact same thing, a strong military is a good thing, and can be very necessary. Plus, to look at it another way, increased military spending and production does create a lot of new jobs. You have all the engineers and tech people designing these missiles, the contractors to build them, the companies to ship them, testing and trial contractors, and hell, even the people who mine the materials. Military production keeps a lot of people in business. - diggimator, on 01/27/2009, -1/+9That'll make it faster and more deadly.
- jnav121, on 01/27/2009, -1/+9or use similar rocket engines to chase and destroy rogue incoming missiles ?
"This capability would be useful to many future weapon systems and is being studied for applications in air-to-air, air-to-ground and ground-to-ground weapon systems," says Kong.
I hope you don't ever apply for a job that requires "reading"... Wouldn't make it - Tyrghast, on 01/27/2009, -3/+10"They're the ones that are too stupid to realize that a STRONG offense is the BEST defense."
Any other catchy movie lines you want to use in an attempt to show you know a single thing about international conflict? - Topher06, on 01/28/2009, -1/+7I hope the new missles are greener and get better mileage.
- inphu510n, on 01/27/2009, -3/+9Let me just break this one down simply for everyone here.
America spends more on it's military (pre Iraq) than the rest of the world COMBINED. - MrAwesomeMan, on 01/27/2009, -4/+10I'm glad they're finally taking care of this problem. There's nothing worse than a slow missile.
- SoftwearSlash, on 01/27/2009, -0/+6Yes, especially those locking onto our planes with radar.
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -2/+7500%?
Now I remember why we don't let you make the budget anymore... - pinchduck, on 01/27/2009, -1/+6We're pretty good at healthcare. It's the paying for it part that we suck at.
- pepedefever, on 01/27/2009, -1/+6Yup, best line ever
- arlok789, on 01/27/2009, -2/+7Not to mention exports. Selling these things goes a long way toward closing our trade deficit and most of it goes to peaceful nations that just want top of the line equipment for their defense forces. Some of it does find its way into combat but if it wasn't us exporting it, those people that use our weapons for war would just buy weapons elsewhere.
- CaptOblivious, on 01/27/2009, -1/+6jnav121,
I think that applies to about 50% of diggers.
I always have to remind myself that by definition, 50% of people are below average and that the lowest 25% is still a huge number of people. - SQLDigger, on 01/28/2009, -1/+6I think we should cut it by a jillion %.
- bigp3rm, on 01/27/2009, -9/+14Meanwhile education funding is getting slashed.
- theonlywizdum, on 01/28/2009, -0/+5Oh yes, GPS technology blew right up in Iraq, along with the Jeep, sat phones, and kevlar.
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4Yea, like wheelchairs!
- SQLDigger, on 01/28/2009, -0/+4Yeah, according to the GAO we exported $12 billion worth in 2004, vs. $2 billion in imports. Granted, it's a small portion of the $1 trillion + defense budget that year, BUT most of that money goes back into the U.S. economy anyway.
- domnu, on 01/27/2009, -1/+5Exactly.
- Hetman, on 01/27/2009, -13/+17I dunno if you realize this. But there is a difference between killing imaginary avatars, and people in RL. One does not have a respawn point at the end.
- maz2331, on 01/28/2009, -1/+5Still too low. It should be doubled.
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3Hopefully they'll start by testing it on your house. Just so you can feel proud.
- drewbe121212, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3But where does the blow off valve go?
- Super6, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3Yo dawg, I heard you like rockets so I put a rocket on your rocket so you can missile while you missile.
- AboveandBeyond, on 01/27/2009, -4/+7Israel have ordered 400,00...and by ordered I mean they are given for free in the name of american taxpayers money.
- jnav121, on 01/27/2009, -3/+6if you could read the new stimulus plan they are trying to practically double the amount for education. There will also be lots of gov jobs, lots of green gov jobs, and probably less than 1/3 of the money for the stimulus won't even go to the infrastructure repairs until after the recession is over!
Maybe you're not thinking or just can't read? or both? - roijen, on 01/28/2009, -1/+4Is it really? I thought Obama was in office now.
- stix213, on 01/27/2009, -2/+5Nice, good to know we are still trying to stay ahead.
- salinemist, on 01/28/2009, -1/+4I never read anything about the Department of Education in The Constitution.
- danj484, on 01/28/2009, -0/+3The military can't do ***** for cancer.
- Hetman, on 01/27/2009, -3/+5A traditional war that we started. We were never attacked by Iraq and Iraq was never a security threat to us. And it think it is funny that you say we are finishing it up. It might be better than it was a year ago, but it is going to be a long time before we are able to fix everything in Iraq that we broke.
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2Iraq certainly required a "strong offense". It's too bad your grandchildren will be paying off the debt.
- BCPneumatics, on 01/27/2009, -2/+4"Pull that shrapnel out of your ass Johnson and put it in the blue can. That's an order."
- smithra, on 01/27/2009, -4/+6For smart bombs and illiterate children; cheers America.
- Wargala, on 01/27/2009, -3/+5Coming again to save the ***** day yeah!
- crit1caL, on 01/27/2009, -1/+3False. Buddhism.
- MelvinSchlubman, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2And shopping carts. Really blast those blasted aisle-blockers.
- Buelldozer, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2You present an accurate statistic but that level of military spending is what is required when everyone has their pet "project country" that they want the U.S. to help out in. I've personally seen calls here on Digg in the last 12 months for us to get involved in Mogadishu, Zimbabwe, Somolia, and about a half a dozen more countries.
You can't do that kind of work with a Bud Light budget. The military is an easy target for budget cuts but they are NOT the largest portion of our budget, not even post Iraq and Afghanistan. - nuclearwasted, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2***** Yeah! Go America!
Asshats... - MrViklund, on 01/27/2009, -0/+2That's very true. But they will probably have to cut back on that in the coming years. They will not be able to afford it. Conclusion is that it's costly to stay at the top. In what aver field.
