- cactus476, on 01/16/2008, -17/+74And this is on Digg why again?
- jsreid, on 01/16/2008, -23/+79are you serious? this is nothing new. get this off digg.
- kaeverak, on 01/16/2008, -2/+40I file complaints quite often but it never seems to do me any good
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -12/+42I belong to the National DO NOT WANT [repeated submissions on Digg] Registry
- Sithlrd, on 01/16/2008, -0/+29I removed my phone from my house. Works very well
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -1/+23I pretend I'm an enlightened Jehovah's witness, on WEED.
It's always funny because they get pissed about it.
"Hi, my name is Brian and I'm calling for.."
-Hi, Brian, isn't it a wondeful day today? Don't you just love our lord and all he gives to us? Have you found God, Brian?
"Yeah, so this is about a new credit card we off.."
- God is listening, Brian. He knows who you work for, do you think this is what your lord and saviour wants you to do with what he blessed you with?
"What?"
-God loves Brian, I love you also, let's gab about God. - theendcrazyeye, on 01/16/2008, -0/+19I just mess with them, its quite fun really.
- dvsbastard, on 01/16/2008, -0/+19And the Aussie registry for those (like myself) who digg from down under:
http://www.donotcall.gov.au/ - Ajajadude, on 01/16/2008, -3/+20Maybe it's like in real life: if you complain too much and too often, people just start to ignore you.
- drpunkerz, on 01/16/2008, -5/+22Welcome to 4 years ago, digg.
- Haecceity, on 01/16/2008, -3/+14Can there really be many US diggers who haven't heard of the national do not call list?
- funsac22, on 01/16/2008, -1/+12I've never heard of it... Oh wait, yeah I did when I signed up for it 5+ years ago. Oh and again when the gov't sent me something in the mail about it and how could i forget, when the evening news had nothing better to report on. Oh and on slashdot 5+ years ago...
- norle, on 01/16/2008, -0/+11Be careful. The "Do Not Call" registry is only good for three years at a clip. You need to re-register after three years is up or your name drops off the list. I found this out the hard way when I got a sales call and ripped the caller a new one and then went online to check and my name had expired off the list. Oops...
- musntSurfatWork, on 01/16/2008, -1/+10Can we get a National Do Not Digg Paris Hilton or Britney Spears or Steve Jobs or impeach Bush Registry ?
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -0/+8Try moving into an appartment where someone who had serious debt problems just left... Happened to me in the 80's. I kept telling the collectors he didn't live here anymore, and they kept banging on my door like I owed them something and they somehow decided that I knew the guy. They'd call three to four times a day and bang on my door at least twice a day (or night). Plus they'd bother everybody else in the building so the other people who lived there thought I actually had debt problems and gave me ***** about it.
I had to threaten them with a hunting riffle to make it stop (after about 3 weeks of getting bothered randomly at any time of the day) when they were banging on my door again. Then they called the cops on me and I told the cops they were trying to break into my house, the collectors told the cops I owed them money, the cops asked for proof and I never saw the collectors again. - tylertyler, on 01/16/2008, -0/+8Well did you try removing your name from the phone book as well?
- endlessoul, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7"...let's gab about God"
Priceless. - yunus, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7In my area Verizon tried to charge money to do that. So they asked what name should be in the phone book and I gave them a mispelled version of my last name. I still get the calls but I hang up when they pronounce my name incorrectly.
- deegins, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7Yeah I like to pretend I am retarded (thats not much of a stretch) and those jerks still want to take my CC number and sell me their junk.
- scanman20, on 01/16/2008, -1/+8WTF, is this 2003?
- h3lx, on 01/16/2008, -1/+8If I don't recognize the area code, the person calling, and they don't leave a message- ***** em. The ringer is on low and seldom hear it anyways.
No mobile phone either... I won't have it. If my life ever gets so complicated I have to be in constant communication with anyone over anything I'll find something else to do. It's a manufactured need with no significant benefit. Talking to people is overrated, 7/8ths of them can hear you fine, they just refuse to listen. - TomTruelle, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7Oh *****... I think I remember calling you a few years ago when I worked for a Verizon call center.
- chicagodj, on 01/16/2008, -0/+7Solicitations for donations, political calls, and marketing research (surveys) are all exempt from the Do Not Call registry. Read the fine print.
- Digitalicious, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6It only applies to telemarketers only. You can still get calls from people who aren't trying to sell you something. So market research companies that do phone surveys, or non-profit companies looking for donations are not affected by the do not call list.
- KSUdesigner, on 01/16/2008, -0/+6Unfortunately that registry isn't very effective either.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -6/+12Digg is a US web site, it's a US company, and it's written in American English.
Oh yeah, and .gov is only used by the US government. What nation do you think they're talking about? - deeboe, on 01/16/2008, -2/+8Judging by the American flag on the submitter's icon...
- cawpin, on 01/16/2008, -1/+7"Can there really be many US diggers who haven't heard of the national do not call list?"
Can there be ANYONE in the US that hasn't heard of this? - riklomas, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5And for those in the UK:
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ - cualcrees, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5And for those in Mexico:
www.profeco.gob.mx - Deahsella, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5Just an FYI about the registry that a lot of people don't realize: if you have actually conducted business with a company in the last 18 months, then they have a right to call you even if you are on the registry. That means if you have purchased something (a product, a service, or just information) or have given them your phone number which is an allowance for them to contact you. Most companies, however, maintain their own internal Do Not Call lists. If these companies that you've done business with call you, you can request to be put on their own lists, which can take around 30 days to process (yes, that's ridiculous, but I think it's just a CYA more than anything). MOST companies these days adhere to the National DNC Registry rules, because they face very stiff penalties if they do not. Chances are, if they're calling you, they're allowed to...there's always a loophole somewhere.
- wbeavis, on 01/16/2008, -4/+9Those aren't telemarketers, they are bill collectors. Pay your f$% bills and the calls will stop.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -0/+5I just looked at www.parliament.uk and I am in the U.S.
That must make you an American. - Grimdotdotdot, on 01/16/2008, -2/+7Digg is an International web site. I know, because I'm looking at it from the UK. Your main point still stands, though.
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -1/+6Lol I think we found a telemarketer.
- chicoer2001, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5Digg has officially jumped the shark.
- cawpin, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4It's 5 years.
- cawpin, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5It is and has always been illegal for them to call your cell phone, no matter what. Also, it doesn't matter if they are using a computer dialer, they still have to blacklist numbers on the do not call lists.
- GeorgeClayton, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4Telemarketing companies are fined very heavily for violations.
- solidus636, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5I signed up for this not even a year ago, but I still get telemarketing calls...
I usually cuss them out, but I'm just saying that this doesn't even work that well. - Shawn4168, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4http://www.gmail.com
- inactive, on 01/16/2008, -1/+5Rofl.
- drachemorder, on 01/16/2008, -0/+4Sometimes bill collectors get the wrong number and call you when they're looking for someone else. Those calls can be a serious pain to stop, especially when there's not a real person on the other end of the line that you can just explain things to.
And even if there is a person, he usually doesn't speak English. - rushiku, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3While true, I, for one, am tired of getting call after call begging for more of my money to give to the cops. I pay taxes, therefore, I already give them money. If their salary is not enough to pay for the houses they've purchased in my neighborhood, move some place cheaper. If it's not enough to pay for their flipping car, and truck, and boat and RV, flipping sell them. Stop calling me for money! I've raised a family on less than rookies make, they do not need my, or your, money.
Finally, for those of you under the assumption that the 'Sheriff's Dept' sticker you get with your 'donation' is some sort of 'ward against oppression', you are very mistaken. - spark232, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3how about a national DO NOT MAIL registry! Or try this free service sponsored by environmentalists: http://www.catalogchoice.org/
- CalamariAce, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3I just tell them that I'm not 18, and then they usually hang up because they know I'm not eligible for a credit card and that I won't have one to buy anything with.
There was one occasion where after giving my normal excuse for being ineligible for a credit card the ambitious salesman quipped, "You can be sure we'll call back when you ARE 18!" - Tourniquet, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3So to file a complaint with them you have you fill out a TPS report?
Don't forget the cover sheet... - NJank, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3Nope. it's not. From the web site:
Your registration will not expire. The Federal Trade Commission will not drop any telephone numbers from the National Do Not Call Registry based on a five-year expiration period pending final Congressional or agency action on whether to make registration permanent. Read more about it at
http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2007/10/dnctestimony.shtm
maybe they used to expire you, but they've supposedly stopped. You can always reregister though, or verify your registration. Doesn't hurt or confuse the system or anything. - ideaash, on 01/16/2008, -0/+3I wish for a do not send me junk mail Registry...
