- jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Press Release: "The company that invented software vulnerability has launched a new AntiVirus application. Microsoft executives say the new initiative, when combined with the relaxed security in such products as Office, Internet Explorer, IIS, and Outlook Express, allows the company's revenue streams to come full circle; making them both the cause-of and solution-to most of your computer's security problems."

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3My review on here: http://digg.com/technology/Microsoft_Anti-Virus_Public_Beta_:_A_first_review.
- troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't help think that there is a major conflict of interest here. What incentive does microsoft have to have a virus-proof operating system... I can just see bill gates now....
"hey steve put that chair down, lets see what other bugs we can put in to windows to make more money off the antivirus sales? hey vista boys, have you finished the work to make other antivirus softwar slow and our superquick. Oh yeah preinstall the antivirus so we can wipe norton off the face of the earth." Come on kubuntu guys sort out your operating system so I don't have to use Micro$oft anymore. - DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg, but I'll stick with avast! antivirus.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using OneCare for months as a beta tester and I've been very happy with it. It's definately designed for the novice computer user and doesn't offer much in the way of advanced settings, but you never have to worry about it. It quitely updates itself regularly and seems to do a great job.
- ozskier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, microsoft has some balls.
- semvhu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm a bit wary of this one. MS AntiSpyware is pretty good in that it scans real-time, but it's missed stuff that Adaware SE and Spybot have caught. If MS's own virus scan misses viruses as well, that's not any good.
However, I too have run out of Norton's subscription. This may be perfect timing. :)
On other topics, there is certainly no love lost between PC and Mac users, eh? :o) Until another computer standard knocks Windows off the top for gaming (not counting consoles here, I'm in on those as well), I'll stick with Microsoft. - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Should Microsoft just make the operating system safe to begin with?
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crap, sorry posted comment on wrong story... now I wish I could edit my comments.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have had it for 4 months now. Its works good!
- salweem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was on the Beta for a couple of months, in my own opinion it is real good piece of software
- JalenJade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If this is the same Anti-Virus they had in Windows One Care Live then this is a GREAT application. I had beta tested One Care for months and never had any problems. (when I switched back to my old setup, I did a scan) and long as they can keep up good software like that, I might remain a customer..
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That interviewer John Itner (sp?) was a tool. Jay did great and the info was good, but it was a kinda a crappy camera angle and boring way of questioning.

- roy182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The idea of "I'm not getting AV from company that makes the security holes" is rather stupid. 3rd-party vendors (Zone Labs, McAfee, Symantec, etc.) don't publish their products blocking all viruses - they all require updates to be effective. However innovates and produces the best end-results is the best product. Today it's Zone Labs. However, if multiple reviewers conclude a year from now that MS is better than Zone Labs, I'll consider using it.
- Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Should Microsoft just make the operating system safe to begin with?
Software is something that can never be perfect. Software is always hackable. Although Windows is very vulnerable when compared to Mac or Linux. - crpietschmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Do you really trust microsoft to keep you safe from spam and viruses? hmmm"
How do you really know you can trust any company to keep you safe from spam and viruses? - dankiswess, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No firefox support...I don't need MS VirusScan for that reason alone.
- kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
- CoolSilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Avast is my AV. Free Edition works. It scans more things and better than Norton.
Only a 9 MB download. Imagine the memory it uses. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I'll try it out, and let you guys know what I think about it on my blog.
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://Kaspersky.com
Only the very best, Kaspersky.
Yes, you have to pay for it. But it is just awesome at stopping viruses. Was able to remove viruses norton, avast, AVG, Mcafee were only able to locate, not remove. Norton sucks the worst though. - kinobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@8ight
You said it. Nod32 is the best antivirus I've tried so far.
I wanted to give this a go but I gotta sign up for that OneCare package, and it's only for a 30 day trial... mm no thanks. - rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahaha. After you run the scan and "clean up all viruses" the progress screen says "Now Fixing Your Computer"
- EagleX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
- Bowski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DO NOT DOWNLOAD!!! This product sucks ball sack. It will make your PC slower than hell.
Out. - stormlrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahhhh the market squeezing starts on AV now...
- Pinoycyberwebs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hope their compatible...
- blindfaith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I plan to switch to a mac in January but in the meantime I am on Windows but I am not putting any security software on here except for the built in Windows Firewall. Only noobs need protection. I run an online scan every two weeks, I get nothing."
Yep, your doing a good job! Keep believing that the security software on your computer can detect anything, feel safe when it tells you, you have nothing... Because only Noobs can get virus... - scottevans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0diggnationdevon said "Only noobs need protection. I run an
online scan every two weeks, I get nothing."
i think you meant to say....."only noobs dont get protection".....What's your IP, btw? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jarrod, this is a free service, so kindly go the ***** back to Slashdot you FUD-spewing zealot.
- loker269, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been trying it for a while I like my trend micro PC-cillin though but this program is actually quite good and it is perfect for your average PC user...it encourages backing up often, keeping virus definitions up to date, defragging your HDD, other things as well...it is actually quite robust and I would highly recommend it
- Nocturnal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been a beta tester for a few months now. It's been great. I used to use Norton and basically it would hog resources like crazy. With OC it's much better.
- curtissthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Honestly has Microsoft ever (initially) written their own code for any app/OS?!
And some how they made it to the top, idiots everywhere! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The clean-up service is rather lousy. I just ran a scan to clear out some unneeded files, and it told me I only have 140 kilobytes worth of temporary files that are safe to delete. This can't be possible. With three users on this computer, I'm confident that there are at least several hundred megabytes in IE cache alone.
Norton's tools are far better for this. They clean out your registry and all sorts of other things most people wouldn't be able to do manually. - Enendar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0isn't this just One Care? Which sucks by the way (I'm a beta tester for it)
- RLJ1.51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"like taking your PC in for a tune up at the service station."
after they break it on your
Isn't "protection" illegal? - orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0becase no one knows how to make your computer crash like microsoft does. I bet even the antivirus crashes the computer.
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I've had it since this afternoon. I'm still trying to do a first time tuneup. It will take all night, I think. It just eats Explorer 6, and shuts her down, or I shut her down cause she won't work. I have rebooted 5 times, so far, and had to restart the program.
The BIG thing is that they put anti virus, defrag, backup, and 1-2 more things, all in one program, that you cannot edit. You run em all till their done, or you didn't pass the test, and you can barely use your machine. I admit, I gotta ***** running, but I'm sure lots of other people do too.
No Digg for MSoft. I would advise waiting till we beta test this thing clean... Thats what I get for being an early adopter.....
Cyborg (yeah, thats twice) :) - republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maagic, why do you have a picture of that like nine year old actress from the world of the wars?
http://digg.com/users/Maagic - ajaybancroft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i've used it for awhile now, (read: around two months), and found that it starts my computer back up a few minutes to a couple hours after i shut the computer off. i've found that i can control it by how often and what time it runs its scans. the other thing i dont like about it is how it loads on startup - i cant find how to get rid of that feature. i installed the upgrade (after stopping the re-start problem) and it started re-starting again
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0curtissthompson, what the ***** are you talking about, fool? Microsoft is composed of employees. Despite of what you may think, it's not an actual living entity. It doesn't write code. It hires people who write code. So it went and hired all the employees in some company to continue writing the code they already had. This is somehow evil? What are you, a child? You don't know how corporate America works?
Just about the only semi-constant employment enjoyed within Microsoft, or any corporation, is management. It's not their job to sit at a computer writing software. They do that job, and hire programmers who do theirs. - peterberry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't this for One Care Live, the desktop app, not the Safety Center online web app
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Honestly has Microsoft ever (initially) written their own code for any app/OS?!"
LOL. That is so true! - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I plan to switch to a mac in January but in the meantime I am on Windows but I am not putting any security software on here except for the built in Windows Firewall. Only noobs need protection. I run an online scan every two weeks, I get nothing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OMG this things sucks.. i love how it deletes my security tools without asking..sure some can be used for evil but they can also be used for vuln testing
and why does it scan my pdf's for a year? it stayed on one 3 meg pdf for 15 minutes..
And microsoft crappy programming is why alot of these virii exist(note i said alot not all).. shouldnt they provide this thing for free? I would digg it if it was free
My biggest problem with subscription virus proggies is that alot of people let their subscriptions expire and then forget about it.. I fix more computers with virii where the people say "but i have nortons" and i reply "yeah but it expired last year"
If mycrocrap was serious about cleaning up their lack of good security image they would release this free -
