- philmunt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Mod me down but how did this hit the front page, I can't imagine this being news to the average digg user. This is something we all know.
- mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26But now Microsoft know it too. That's new.
- meltingrobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Interesting that the Sony rootkit apparently counts as 6% of installed rootkits. Way to go Sony!!! :P
- Hackintosh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16hehehe... "backdoor Trojans"
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Uh, i'm sure it meant: 'Microsoft: Users a Big Problem for Windows'
- Chrysalid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Old news with a big 'O'. And I mean it. This has been in general knowledge for years. I don't see any reason to bring this up again.
- Ifligus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Other breaking news of equal surprise: Scientists have discovered that people actually need air to breathe!
- Virak, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10The whole ***** point of trojans is that they pretend to be non-malicious software to get the user to run it. It's not a problem with Windows that they can just "fix"; it's a problem that'll exist as long as people run random executables they don't know about from random people they don't know about, and it'll exist on other OSes (though they probably won't be as much of a problem, unless you run as root) once they get popular enough for trojan authors to target them.
EDIT: And because I'm probably going to get some idiot going "lol ur just a windoze fanboy", I use Linux exclusively, so you're going to have to think up a more original reason to deny reality. - kazsymonds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Too true, the worst thing about windows is its users, the average windows user likes to let windows do everything for him.
If all windows users were as aware as linux users then there would not be a problem and people would not get haxored. - anonatron, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14Yes Microsoft, "trojans" are a problem in your operating system... It's good that you have finally realized this, now FIX IT!
- theOster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@virak - no *****. when are we going to realize that the general public is just not ready for computers at any level?
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Even better
"Computers: Users a Big Problem for the Operating System", for generalized cases of PEBKAC - SpyDerMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Virak: Did you know many of these "trojans" install themselves onto machines WTHOUT user interaction? I've been running a honeypot for a couple of days and in less than an hour I got at least 10 remote code execution exploit attempts JUST STAYING CONNECTED to the internet.
This isn't you daddy's virus. These are self-replicating bots, taking over unpatched machines that just happen to have an IP address.
What I'm saying is that it's not the user's fault anymore. It's Microsoft's. - inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess it's Digg worthy to spread the information but I think most who read digg already should know this stuff.
- xswag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2FUD
- Virak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@SpyDerMann:
That's nice, but *those aren't trojans*. You know what we call those things that replicate and infect other machines? We call them *worms*. *Trojans* are merely programs that disguise themselves as something the user desires and executes the payload when run. Even if that payload is a virus or worm, its still a trojan. You can't in any way blame Microsoft for trojans; trojans rely on the user to execute them. Sure, you can blame them for the many security holes and bugs that other malicious software uses, but trojans always have and always will be a problem with the users, not the computer. - technotimber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why is this news now? after every windows machine is corrupted - then it's enough proof?!
- SpyDerMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If Microsoft hadn't insisted on stopping pirated windows from getting updates, perhaps we wouldn't have these problems. I've seen a lot of people in my country who are running pirated windows and haven't updated to SP2, or SP1 for that matter. Is it a mystery that it's precisely the pirated machines the ones running bots?
If Microsoft wants to prosecute the users for piracy, I have NO problem. But please, STOP TAKING THE INTERNET AS HOSTAGE! Your actions, Microsoft, only harm us legitimate users! Stop the WGA program! - cohortq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Must be a slow news day.
- JaggedEdge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Old News..... Look Up BotNet @ Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botnet
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What is a backdoor trojan?
I thought that a trojan was when something claimed to be something it's not. So if it's coming in the backdoor, then it's hardly a trojan right? - joemawlma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@virak
lol ur just a windoze fanboy. - MasteRR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, according to MS, 60% of PCs installed with their OS are infectred with malware.
Scary. - nikkesen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1... "backdoor trojans"... no kidding. They wouldn't be trojans if they didn't take a backdoor in.
- niceyuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"But now Microsoft know it too. That's new."
And now they're trying to sell an anti-virus program too.. how convenient. Maybee Microsoft knew it all along but chose to ignore the cause of the problem being their insecure OS? - KaneDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed. It boggles the mind.
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6As horrible a person as I am, I never picked up on that one. Thank you for further corrupting me, its much appreciated. :D Backdoor trojans... that makes me want to go plug a male connector into a female connector all night long.
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Odd, I have none of these particular infections according to that tool. I thought running ZoneAlarm's suite was supposed to suck?
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Linux users are better with securing their OS? Hardly.
Any Casual linux user will leave their system wide open for lack up updates, not patching and misconfiguration
Why? Because its really not that easy to do. Especially if you need to update your dependancies.. and without knowledge of the portage/apt/up2date/whatever system ....... you're dead in the water.
At least in the case of Microsoft, they have the ability to shove updates down your throat.. if that is in fact what you require. - tweaked540, on 02/04/2009, -0/+0Here is a great article on bots and how they work:
http://digg.com/security/Bot_Networks_and_Owning_t ... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i just got infected with virus iworm_attack_v122.02a and its sucks ass. it puts popups on my screen every thirty seconds (which are hard to tell apart from system screens) and it has a blinking icon in the taskbar that pops up a message saying that i have a virus. FFFFFFFFFF************************cking IE!!!!!!! i f*ing hate IE now... F*ckers
- skyshark88, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4If I messed up my room I had to clean it............ THE REAL STORY SHOULD BE MICROSOFT SHOULD CLEAN UP XP...... Legal or not anyone should be able to update XP it is those machines that pose the greatest risk to the hole net.....Companies loss millions from DNS attacks and no one looks to MS...
- pupils, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In other news... cigarettes a big problem for lungs!
We'll have the "news you can use" right after these messages. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2um...good windows users have to be more aware in order to prevent viruses than the average Linux user.....there's more attacking Windows than Linux....thats a fact.
- Darc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Digg me down, but I personally am a big Microsoft fan. I don't like the prices of their products, but I think the things they deliver are generally high in quality.
I do administrate Linux based servers, and use tons of open source products as well... but I also acknowledge that without Windows, I wouldn't have formed any interest in computers to have been able to investigate Microsoft alternatives.
I'm not saying someone else wouldn't have done it if MS hadn't or that the GUI was invented by Microsoft. I just know that the very fact that I enjoy computers and know a lot about them and the world of technology (I work in a corporate I.T. environment) is the soul responsibility of Microsoft. They made computing easy to the average person, and helped push the technological standard in our society. I don't know about you, but that's worth something in my book. Maybe it would have happened anyway, but because of Microsoft, it happened tons quicker.
That being said, I am a developer (no, I don't work for Microsoft) and OPEN SOURCE TO THE DEATH!!! - sproket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1And this is digg worthy because...?
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5yeah mod me down...you all know its true.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9its because Digg users want to bash MS, and they'll look for any way they can.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2ah-huh-huh-huhuh... you said backdoor... a-huh-huh-huh
Anyways... Micro$oft just realized this threat?!
What drugs have Uncle Bill been smoking to slow his brain down.
