- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Symantec: we originated the business of security extortion, and we plan to stay on top.
- SwornPacifist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Although some of these provided services may not really be necessary for the average user, the fact that McAfee, Symantec/Norton, and Microsoft are all competing should only mean good things for users.
More companies in the same sector = competition for high quality and low price = benefit for consumers - msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here's the press release: http://www.mcafee.com/us/about/press/corporate/2006/20060530_183520_u.html
As I was submitting this story, I also came across this story:
Windows Live OneCare Software Ships Early
http://news.yahoo.com/s/pcworld/20060531/tc_pcworld/125935
Meaning that the security suite will be available for download from Microsoft's site early. - saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't really think Microsoft is the pioneer in profiting from viruses.
- GamerSmurf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm, I was hoping to see some images of this Falcon software...
I've used OneCare and was rather impressed because it was a light program -unlike POS Norton- ( OneCare for only $20! http://tinyurl.com/lm36q - I just might have to get this ) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm sure Microsoft will start bundling their care package with every Vista install, making sure to leave an annoying pop-up dialog in the corner, "You could be in danger. Have you secured your PC with OneCare yet?".
- kRYPT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3kRYPT today announces his TwoCare program for PCs. I offer you not one, but FOUR levels of protection..depending on what you can afford:
Bronze Protection, $2.50: I will come to your house and cut your network cable.
Silver Protection, $5: I will delete the IE shortcuts from your system, and install Firefox.
Gold Protection, $10: Like Silver, but I'll also install AVG.
Platinum Protection, $20: Live Gold, but I'll also install Spybot S&D.
All fees are monthly. Failure to pay fees will result in my coming to your house, and cutting your PC's power cable. - TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Microsoft actually encourage inovation from other companies as well as itself....consumers will benifit!!
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's getting to the point that you need a seperate PC just for the security suites!
- matthiasgoodman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Before you all bash on this guy, you need to realize that the corporate versions of the McAfee's product is a lot better than the one they sell to consumers. We use Symantec's product at my office, which is not the same as Norton.
- Iphis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I monitor a college residential network and having used MS' one care beta, Mcafee, and Symantec, I would go with mcafee in a heartbeat over the other two. As invasive as it is, it does not slow down the system, it gets rid of what it finds, it doesn't suddenly stop working for no apparent reason (I have had various problems with the other two) etc, etc.. If you must use security software (and I suspect we all must) then this is at a minimum the best of the worst (and maybe even better than that).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2.....some of those comments are 3 years old!
- luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MAKE IT STOP! MAKE IT STOP!
*cringes in anticipation of increasingly bloated Mcafee and Norton 'security' suites*
Things are bad enough as it is, try to do what MS is doing with one care without actually being MS is asking for trouble.
Oy vey! - nrbelex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've never heard of such a bloated falcon before. Can it even fly?
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3NOD32 owns
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So do you also pay the yearly Microsoft "protection" fee for your father as well?
My parents use OSX, I don't have any support calls either and I don't have any recurring fees - nor do they! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1..yeah but dealing with malware is very research intensive and it takes a lot of R&D which smaller companies simply don't have access to....AVG's actual ability to find and clean viruses is way down the league table and relying on it can still leave you vulnerable.... there is a great independant test here which explains in more detail http://www.avtest.org/
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think they found some viruses and bugs in OSX....but the fanboys deny it.
- TubaTechno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Your parents neither do any gaming, or programming...etc....
- Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I use LiveCare and I love it, it has a couple of issues but overall its probably the best security suite I have ever used. It doesnt nag me ever about firewall exception, I think it has asked me 3 times about an uknown application and Microsoft does an excellent job at keeping the internal approved list up to date also since I have had zero applications not connect other than my VPN which they gave me instructions on how to do in the help file...I would never trust a McAfee product after their the horrible AntiVirus experience I had with their products. Norton is even worse and is bloated to hell not to mention it bugs you about ***** every second and installs a bunch of other crap out there...
I installed OneCare on my fathers computer also and it reduced the amount of tech support calls I get to a minimum, I really do like this product which is suprising to me actually because I thought it was going to be halfass but it seems like they went the extra step with it... - shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yeah.. except in this case all three companies seem to suck at what they do
all 3 companies competing at the same time = more garbage being sold to consumers = more idiots spending money - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I had problems with viruses and malware and then I tried some software called 'OSX'. It appears to have done the trick.
- duke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe this will persuade ZoneAlarm to drop the price of their suite. Duke likes the ZoneAlarm suite!
- Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Superkendall, my father ALSO has an apple in their kitchen for which he uses but he maintains his pc so he can get his work done and so my mom can do her school work. Yeah tried the interoperability thing, sorry but it was to much of a learning curve for my parents.
- vector66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I know I'm missing an n in been!!!!!!!!!
- Lostcosmos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2DO NOT USE McAfee. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/computers/mcafee_renewal.html
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1McAfee will not fly.... its flagship Virus Scanner is one of the most bloated and useless applications I've seen..
Falcon... one quote for this...
"Caw...Caw... BANG! ***k hes dead!"

superkendall
you sir are a tool! i love how Mac users protecting their beloved OS. Gotta save the magic of Mac.
lol. not long ago News.com have reported Apple Koera's OS X server got hacked. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I hadn't heard of OneCare being on a subscription basis until just now. How ***** ridiculous! Doesn't anyone else see this as a huge conflict of interest? Why the hell should Microsoft be offering a virus protection suite to protect viruses from the OS that they make? I call shenanigans. Shenanigans *to the max*.
- vector66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Guys, please be informed that you do not need this type of service. If you look around there is excellent free versions of programs such as AVG and Zone. I have bee using them for years with great results. Am I missing something here?
