- JumboJ3t, on 11/02/2009, -1/+59So it monitors leaky babies? Ew.
(Sorry) - xero69, on 11/02/2009, -3/+44If it bothers him so much maybe he can get off his lazy ass and RUN A PHYSICAL WIRE from the baby's room to his bedroom. Otherwise enjoy having your neighbors and anyone driving by peeking into your house without crossing over the curb.
On a related note, if that baby monitor makes him anxious just wait until he finds out how deeply the operators of the On-Star vehicle systems can track your movements and eavesdrop on your conversations inside the vehicle (without a warrant no less). - badqat, on 11/02/2009, -5/+46Wow...and in the end, if we're lucky, we'll get $1 off our next baby monitor purchase!
- lead2thehead, on 11/02/2009, -1/+38No, you'll pay an extra $15 because they'll have to add encryption.
- RyeBrye, on 11/02/2009, -3/+36And based on the fact that they usually just have an "A" and "B" switch on them to pick the wireless channel, you'd have to be absolutely ***** retarded to not realize this was a possibility.
- goobly, on 11/02/2009, -5/+33OMG MY NEIGHBOR HEARD MY BABY IM GONNA SUE
- EddiePotato, on 11/02/2009, -0/+27Ma'am, this is On-Star... We've received an indication that your husband's vehicle is parked at a cheap motel during his lunch hour. Do you need assistance?
- dystra, on 11/02/2009, -0/+25my toy walki-talkies use to pick up my neighbors monitor...all i heard was fighting.
- EMFK, on 11/02/2009, -5/+29Without this lawsuit, how many consumers purchased this product and not realized this was a possibility? This will be an interesting case to follow because most people expecting usually request baby monitors at showers or they purchase them later. It is usually one of the "must have" products that is listed for many expecting parents.
- bubbadigg, on 11/02/2009, -1/+25
From their instruction book: "Nursery monitors use public airwaves to transmit signals. This monitor may pick up signals from other monitors or similar devices and signals broadcast by this monitor may be picked up by other receivers."
I wonder which part of "Please read the following instructions and warning carefully" he didn't understand.
BAWHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ! What a dunce. - cheddaro, on 11/02/2009, -0/+23I used to listen to my neighbors baby monitor on the police scanner when I was a kid. You could hear everything they said anywhere in the house.
- robertisaar, on 11/02/2009, -8/+30"privacy is not a right"
you're serious? - SpongeBad, on 11/02/2009, -0/+21Trust me, leaky babies should be monitored.
Seriously. - byleth, on 11/02/2009, -0/+20It amazes me just how little people understand radio technology given how long it has been around.
- MattB123, on 11/02/2009, -0/+18Leaky babies = regular babies.
- sabach, on 11/02/2009, -0/+17I can confirm that, all 3 of my babies leaked. Frequently.
- lead2thehead, on 11/02/2009, -0/+16Just wait till those breastfeeding videos make it to the internet.
- nevesis, on 11/02/2009, -0/+16All the true phreaks wardrive for baby monitors...
- goobly, on 11/02/2009, -0/+13Either way, I think it's ***** silly.

I'm not real sure this suit is going to move very far since part 15 requires that product to have this label. - R3v0lution, on 11/02/2009, -15/+26"Time to buy baby monitors!~-,,

Since i was a young boy, it was pretty common sense you could pic up signals from other kids if you were close enough. It should be up to the consumer to understand what they are buying and not blame the baby monitor company for their lack of knowledge.
- bubbadigg, on 11/02/2009, -1/+11This would be no different than buying those family service radios. Of course others can monitor you conversation if you are on the same frequency. Duh!. Come on people, the reason you were given a brain is so you can use it.
I want security, but I don't what to pay for it. I just going to buy the cheap two channel (insert however many channels on yours) and expect it to be totally secure. Whaaaaaaaaa! - Elsewhere42, on 11/02/2009, -1/+10I would love to buy one of those Wireless Security cameras that I can watch over the internet, but this is exactly why I have not purchased one.
Secure the connection with simple-to-use RSA Public Key Encryption and I'll buy it. - Thistlejack, on 11/02/2009, -1/+9Yes, he was an idiot but the monitor companies aren't completely being forthright either. When I was researching them for my kid, I saw "secure" claims all over every package. What they don't say is that "secure" for them means having the option to broadcast on 20 channels so that there's a 1/20 chance your neighbor will pick up the unencrypted signal.
The average buyer isn't smart enough to understand the difference between an encrypted signal and these supposedly "secure" monitors. What happens is the encrypted monitor (which costs $100 extra) just sits on the shelf, so the monitor companies have decided the more profitable route is to falsely claim their product is secure. - crunchdigg, on 11/02/2009, -1/+9not only that, but his unencrypted WiFi is leaking out of his walls, as is his walkie talkie, His neighbor's RC car is ALSO on the same band as his. He's got so many people to sue.
- dougfromniu, on 11/02/2009, -2/+9Read the US Constitution. There is nothing in it guaranteeing privacy. Sorry you don't have a right to privacy.....tough, deal with it
- mnemy, on 11/02/2009, -1/+8Umm, if it's wireless and has a pre-set selection of channels, you can be damn sure anyone else with the same model (and thus same pre-programmed channels) will be able to intercept it. This is basic wireless *****. Unless it has authentication capabilities, which I highly doubt is standard for wireless baby monitors. Even if the stream was encrypted, they probably use the same encryption key for every unit to make trouble shooting more viable.
That's why it comes with multiple channel settings.
I hope their lawsuit gets thrown out and they're counter sued for court costs. Sure, they probably should have mentioned that other units could pick up your signal in the online FAQ or something, but really, it's their own stupidity for not thinking it through. - VintageRudy, on 11/02/2009, -2/+9It seems the bear hasn't caught this story yet...
- noahgelman, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6A baby monitor is a glorified walkie-talkie, of course you can hear other moniters if they're on the same channel.
- pleen, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7No, the regulation is quite clear. If the device he has includes the proper FCC warning the he should realize that every other product in that line must meet the same compliance regulations.
If an individual wishes to use a secure/encrypted device, they ought to purchase one. - Langford, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7Exactly, this guy should be laughed out of court.
- kalvinb, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7I vaguely remember a warning on the packaging for my wireless security camera.
Of course, that would require that people actually read the manual/packaging before using something.
If we're lucky, manufacturers will simply put a larger warning for this particular issue without resorting to jacking up the price due to requiring functionality for the end user to select the encryption key that is sufficiently difficult to brute force. It would at the least take a rather large dip switch no less than 16 switches to keep people from thinking it's worth their time to try to find someone's key. - swantamer, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6*****.
- ibdav, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6Sounds like someone has a breastfeeding complex...
- PeppermintPig, on 11/02/2009, -2/+7You cannot obligate others to provide you privacy, therefore it is not a right. Why is this so hard to understand?
If you want to get naked in front of an open window in your house where everybody can see you, that's your business.
You can obtain for yourself a degree of privacy that you may be comfortable with. Some people might prefer to own a home instead of renting in an apartment, or build a fence to increase privacy. - zbeast, on 11/02/2009, -1/+6What this guy didn't know that baby monitors are not encrypted and never have been.
If your worryed about your neighbor seeing how about just getting rid of the monitor..
Seash. What a dip...
. - StuartGibson, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5What the everloving ***** are you talking about? Children sleep in their own bedrooms from about four months. My two year old goes to bed at 6:30pm and the baby monitor is there so we can hear if he is unsettled *while he's asleep*. My five year old (who goes to bed at around 7:30) doesn't need a monitor because she is perfectly capable of getting out of bed and coming to us if she needs something.
Why would we put them to bed in the living room? - buddyw, on 11/03/2009, -0/+5the signal is probably analog. Even a digital camera can have an analog signal. I would venture to guess that hardware to digitize, compress, and encrypt the signal (and do the opposite on the other end) would add upwards of $100 to the cost of these devices.
- StuartGibson, on 11/02/2009, -2/+7Yes, because when I put my child to bed at 7pm I'm going to sit in their room watching them until the morning. A baby monitor is so you can hear when they cry when they're in bed or if they've decided 2am is a good time to decide to vomit (again).
- lukas88, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4No one ever told him that the encryption fairy wasn't real.
- PeppermintPig, on 11/02/2009, -2/+6That's not what the case concluded, else you would have an absolute right to privacy, which is both absurd and not followed by the government.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griswold_v._Connectic ...
"The case involved a Connecticut law that prohibited the use of contraceptives. By a vote of 7-2, the Supreme Court invalidated the law on the grounds that it violated the "right to marital privacy"."
It is more so a case about freedom to use a product on a voluntary basis than it is about privacy.
The constitution of the US limits what the federal government can do, and permits states to enact laws which don't violate the protections in the constitution (the reality is that the constitution is heavily abused on many levels).
This includes the fact that government is not supposed to violate your privacy, but it is not the same thing as defining a 'RIGHT' to privacy between individuals.
Maybe what you're referring to is the right to property, and to deny people trespass on it to violate your sense of privacy and security??? - notsofastener, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Baby monitors are typically analog devices. They do not have encryption because the audio/video signal is simply modulated on a carrier frequency for over-the-air transmission to their analog receiver counterpart. Not every device made today is based on digital technology and many devices do not have a microprocessor or microcontroller in them. These monitors represent century old techniques and technologies. There is nothing wrong with them working this way. The user/customer should be aware of the potential for eavesdropping and snooping and not purchase such an item if they fear their privacy will be compromised. If they still insist on video monitoring of their children, they should get a wired video camera and plug it into a monitor/TV.
- kalvinb, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4I'm pretty sure there are warnings about this in the manual. For the most part this isn't an issue since the range on these things is rather limited.
- ibdav, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4But the wireless security cameras (for internet as you say) are as secure as the wireless network you associate them with - i.e. WPA level security in most modern cases - I reckon you're pretty safe. (assuming you are not talking about plain composite video over the air, then a cap. card)
- TheSkunkMonkey, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4One day I heard a baby crying in a spare bedroom in my house and I was freaking out. I went in to look and found I had left an intercom on. It's the type you can just plug in any outlet in the house.
Well, since your neighbors are close enough that it's still the same circuit, so if the intercom is single channel or you happen to use the same channel, you can hear perfectly.
I decided to have some fun with this. There was a switch you could flip to force it to always transmit, which is what these people had done to monitor their baby. The thing is, the last unit to flip this switch takes precedence. So I flipped the switch and started talking in a low, raspy voice: "I am the devil. RAWR. I will kill you all!"
Never heard anything on that intercom after that. - ericthesalmon, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5I think you're overestimating the threat of pedophiles towards children, it's terrifying but still fairly rare, certainly not thousands a day.
- robwhite1979, on 11/03/2009, -0/+4The line "you won't understand until you have kids" is such a cop out. I don't have any kids, but I have 3 nephews an 2 nieces who I would give my life for... If I ever saw a kid in danger I would definatly step up to help. A good example is last summer I was at a zoo with my best friend and his wife and infant daughter and I saw two little girls (maybe 5-6) climbing on the outer fence of a lion enclosure. I went up and let them know that wasn't safe and just as I was speaking to them their mother comes running up yelling "You girls know better than that!!!"... I wanted to look that mother in the eye and say "Shouldn't you know better than to take your eyes off two little girls in a crowded public place where there are wild ***** animals??". Of course she didn't so much as thank me for making sure her kids were OK, as a matter of fact she looked at me like "why the hell are you talking to my kids?".
Stop getting all high and mighty just because you spawned a child, it's not like it takes any special talent the rest of the population is lacking... - dhartin, on 11/02/2009, -2/+6is it really that hard to actually watch your kid
- acwoo, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4Let's hope that both he and his lawyer are reprimanded by the Judge.
