Make Sure You Know When Someone Hacks Your Email
makeuseof.com — If someone has cracked your email password, it may not be apparent to you. A snooper can easily read an email then mark it as unread again. So the best thing to do would be to set up an “electronic tripwire” so if someone breaks into your account, you’ll know about it.

- digg it
- ShoGunX900, on 02/18/2008, -1/+108Good suggestion. Combine it with a trojan and you can have your revenge too :)
- sockpuppets, on 02/18/2008, -0/+64I just upload a photo of goaste and rename it to my3some.jpg. That's punishment enough.
- capiCrimm, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9better if you hide it in the middle of your porn collection.
- stoikiometry, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5Better if the trojan replaces every picture on the hacker's computer with goatse.
- capiCrimm, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9better if you hide it in the middle of your porn collection.
- AlienMushroom, on 02/21/2008, -1/+5It will only work if the provider doesn't scan the attachment.
- h4mx0r, on 02/18/2008, -0/+20Hmm, an electronic tripwire huh? Can I link it with a claymore or something... explosive?
- MuffinPatrol, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6I am gonna go ahead and say yes to this.
- orlyfactor, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7How about I skip the trojan and give the attacker an STD instead?
- Thugacation, on 02/19/2008, -6/+4Not much of revenge if I'm running Linux. Er... I mean the hacker. ;)
- gak001, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Until your girlfriend unwittingly opens it...
- sockpuppets, on 02/18/2008, -0/+64I just upload a photo of goaste and rename it to my3some.jpg. That's punishment enough.
- esengulov, on 02/18/2008, -0/+54step 6 : setup tracker to send you daily reports
- robbh66, on 02/18/2008, -0/+5I was going to say this would be an awesome idea except you have to constantly monitor it.
- Octanus, on 02/18/2008, -2/+11Would work best if you have 2+ email accounts, otherwise the hacker might see the daily report and delete it.
- xt0ph3r, on 02/19/2008, -0/+12A missing daily report, however, could also be seen as a sign of intrusion.
- Octanus, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Would you still be able to get the report online to get the details of who viewed the attachment?
- secleinteer, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3But then the hacker would just forge a daily report without the warning.
- xt0ph3r, on 02/19/2008, -0/+12A missing daily report, however, could also be seen as a sign of intrusion.
- Spyder2k, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8...on-event report!
- troye, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Step 7: Profit.
- medalian1, on 02/18/2008, -1/+9This is a great idea!
- Wakuko, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11This one is better: Make it an option in my email account.
Google and Yahoo should send an email alert 24 hours after someone "mark as unread" a message.
Of course, that account option can be disabled only 24 hours after you unchecked it.
The email alert should detail IP address, date and time of intrusion.
So guys, get working on that!- noodless, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Theres a plugin for squirrel mail http://www.squirrelmail.org/plugin_view.php?id=123

- weeeezzll, on 02/19/2008, -1/+9You know what might be better...picking a difficult to guess/crack password!
You don't even have to do any work, just click this link to get 50 randomly generated password that are not easy to guess/crack: http://www.pctools.com/guides/password/?length=12& ...- RoshanK, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7Wouldn't matter if a keylogger captures it.
- Wakuko, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11This one is better: Make it an option in my email account.
- bitterman316, on 02/18/2008, -33/+233Sometimes I get into my ex-girlfriend´s mail account to read her emails, I didn't hack it, I have always known the password because I created the account and she never thought to change the password even after our breakup.
I read it then I always mark the email as unread.
Yeah I´m a bastard but I cant get over her.- Heaiser, on 02/18/2008, -6/+213Creepy...
- ProfessorSYM, on 02/18/2008, -4/+183That is sad, creepy and hilarious all at the same time.
- HMaster92, on 02/19/2008, -22/+5I was going to digg you up but decided it would be more fun to leave you at 69
- sockpuppets, on 02/18/2008, -3/+79I look forward to seeing your carnage on the evening news.
- robbh66, on 02/18/2008, -6/+115You're doing yourself no good by reading her email. And you're a creeper.
- masterm1nd, on 02/18/2008, -4/+140Let's hope she didn't create your digg account...
- Ajajadude, on 02/18/2008, -4/+57I suppose virtual stalking is better than doing it out in the real world...
- ColonalSanders, on 02/19/2008, -3/+1like facebook?
- linkdj, on 02/18/2008, -0/+188At least you have a really appropriate digg username!
- dizilbdog, on 02/18/2008, -3/+29Does reading those emails eat at your Soul when you try to sleep at night?
- solidus636, on 02/19/2008, -4/+2He has no soul... he reads his girlfriend's emails!...
- cambob76, on 02/18/2008, -2/+45Get over her. Don't punish yourself.
- Ataxia2008, on 02/18/2008, -7/+56"But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo,
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here" - digitallysick, on 02/18/2008, -4/+9Just wait until her account has password changes, etc, and then wreak havoc on all online accounts =)
- Llanowar, on 02/18/2008, -1/+69You really got to stop doing that. Trust me, it just becomes an addiction, and when you get a new girlfriend you'll soon feel the need to spy on her as well. Which will logically just ***** up the new relationship too. So for your own sake you'll need to stop spying.
- monospaced, on 02/18/2008, -16/+10I COULD do that, and my ex-girlfriend COULD do that to me, too. I DON'T do it, and even though I haven't changed my passwords, I don't think she does it. Trust is important. What do you guys think?
- pyro789x, on 02/19/2008, -0/+12Trust is important... in those that deserve it. Misplaced trust is stupid.
- roomforpanic, on 02/19/2008, -0/+16I think this is the comment section of Digg, not group therapy.
- DNABeast, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3I think it's high time you changed your password.
- fdsarawr, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5I think you're a moron. Change your password.
- scamper22, on 02/18/2008, -3/+49Women tend to feel a level of trust by having their partner know their personal information.
My ex gave me her bank account PIN, credit, passwords...without me asking for me. She just felt the need to tell me about it.
It would happen like this:
Her: I'll pay for the move
Me: Sure go ahead
Her: My Pin iis my birthday. What's yours
Me: I don't think so.
I think its something in the women psyche that for tor them to feel loved, they have to give everything to their partner.
Could explain all the stupid women on judge judy too.- offspring06, on 02/19/2008, -0/+24Your ex was stupid and you were smart. Don't give your pin to anyone.
- Magnus150, on 02/19/2008, -2/+26Except me, feel free to share with me. I'm trustworthy!
- alexandramw, on 02/19/2008, -0/+19I gave my boyfriend my pin not to feel close to him or whatever, but because I needed cash and I didn't want to go out. Jeez, what does that say about me? I guess I need to change my pin.
- DNABeast, on 02/19/2008, -0/+13My wife almost blew a cable when she found out I changed my password a little while after I realised she knew it.
I had to sit her down and explain that I changed it every few weeks for security reasons. - strikerK, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9beauty fades, dumb is forever. -judge judy
- weeeezzll, on 02/19/2008, -1/+17This is one of those things that you do, but don't talk about in public. You know, like those thoughts that you have but don't verbalize?
- Magnus150, on 02/19/2008, -4/+1Like the ones with the soup can, corkscrew, copy machine, and pencil?
- Oea420, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2Do what I do and be unusually vicious and mean to distance yourself from them emotionally and eventually it'll just afde away.. of course you can't still be friends doing this
- MrWraith, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0good advice. some of the time it works every time!
- Oea420, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3replying to my own comment.. while making it I was actually in the process of doing such actions. Now I heavily revise my statement.
In doing such actions, not only did it actually turn the tables (She now won't leave ME alone) but I believe she is crazier than I ever was, god help me.- CoolWind, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1she saw through you
- pradador, on 02/19/2008, -3/+3We've all done it, don't worry about it.
- magicmarc, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4Stop doing it, but change her secret question and answer. Therefore, if her password ever changes, you'll feel better that you can have emergency access to the account if needed.
- ritter99, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1with her account send out an email to her boss, telling him how hot she thinks he is.
- TheNeptune, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Wow, I'm in that exact situation.
- teejer, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3i did this to my ex, but i used a keylogger on my computer to obtain her pw while we were dating. then, i used it to confirm that she was indeed cheating on me. however, life goes on, she's worthless. do yourself a favor and forget her, mang.
- minusonebit, on 02/18/2008, -10/+15Damn, this is actually a good idea. I love the idea. But it seems to be a case of treating the symptom rather than the underlying problem. You shouldn't be using web-based e-mail to store things that you wouldn't want disclosed. Its a great place to stash away porn, music and other "who cares" stuff, but anyone storing scans of bank statements, phone bills, images of their SS card or CCs and such in Gmail or Yahoo is an idiot. Don't be such a cheap skate. Buy some DVDs and burn scanned stuff (any idea how many scanned bank statements you can fit on a single DVD?) or get an external (or additional internal) hard drive. Hard drives and blank DVDs are cheap. There is no excuse to use Gmail and Yahoo to store things you should be storing at home.
- rebotfc, on 02/18/2008, -1/+13This is changing though, most ISPs have publically accessable POP servers. Also Google for Domains allows internet wide access to domain hosted emails.
At the end of the day the biggest security risk is at the end of the keyboard.- Fhwqhgads, on 02/18/2008, -0/+2Your stuff becomes theirs in that case.
- kajoob, on 02/18/2008, -2/+8wooooooosh
- AlienMushroom, on 02/21/2008, -6/+2Use outlook.
- surfacewound, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4You could simply store your stuff in a strong password-protected TrueCrypt container before uploading it, which would alleviate any security issues.
- rebotfc, on 02/18/2008, -1/+13This is changing though, most ISPs have publically accessable POP servers. Also Google for Domains allows internet wide access to domain hosted emails.
- oscar509, on 02/18/2008, -10/+1onestatfree dot com hasn't been working for me for the last 2-3 days
- gummih, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1You didn't use the same password as you have on your email did you? Tell me you didn't!
- kupa, on 02/18/2008, -2/+15Wouldn't having a secure password and not leaving it lay about be a better idea? it's an interesting idea, granted, but c'mon. Dunno about you, but I don't generally even write my passwords down, nor do I go shouting them from the rooftops.
- camelot2302, on 02/18/2008, -3/+24Passwords can eventually be broken by brute-force or methodical guess-work. Not everyone has a password like @qfhfhfK(8sksdk@@@ .
- hpfreak26, on 02/18/2008, -2/+43Gah! Have you been snooping in my email?!?
- kupa, on 02/18/2008, -1/+34Still though. If you're the target of a brute force attack, you've got more to worry about then someone snooping your email.
Besides, how many email services allow brute force attacks? Isn't it pretty standard to freeze the account or put up captchas after a few failed login attempts? - robbh66, on 02/18/2008, -0/+9Most email services these days lock people out after a few tries for up to a day. Brute force might be possible, but it will take forever.
- Gabberwok, on 02/18/2008, -0/+6There's always the possibility of a security breach at the email provider as well - which could be a much bigger problem.
- mOdQuArK, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2Uhh...if a password can be broken by brute force or methodical guesswork, that's pretty much the definition of a BAD password.
- justok, on 02/18/2008, -0/+9geez, that's what I use on my luggage.
- vikingboy, on 02/18/2008, -2/+4one word: keylogger
- xenuxenuts, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3This is to detect intrusions, which is totally separate from using good passwords.
- camelot2302, on 02/18/2008, -3/+24Passwords can eventually be broken by brute-force or methodical guess-work. Not everyone has a password like @qfhfhfK(8sksdk@@@ .
- cappslocke, on 02/18/2008, -10/+2This is a fantastic suggestion. Too bad it relies on the fact that someone has access to your email. Use a password rotation.
- Whaines, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Perhaps you should read the article before commenting?
- gthyb, on 02/18/2008, -0/+7All I have to do is check it once a day! Where do I sign?!
- smaster87, on 02/18/2008, -1/+49how about gmail puts a last access times/ips on our accounts?
- Frost9999, on 02/18/2008, -0/+4That would be great. Or perhaps some kind of logging system you can view online. It would be easy and I think people would use it.
- ryanonfire, on 02/19/2008, -0/+30Tell them and they'll do it. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/request.py?cont ...
- kualla, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1A long time ago I recommended exactly that to Google when they were asking people what features they should still add into gmail... I STRONGLY would like to see this incorporated into Google as I feel it would be a huge security addition!
Everyone should get in contact with Google about this, their service is defiantly my favorite for email but security could always be improved even if it has the best security for any email service out.- ciram, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4www.d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com

- over900000, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1That's what Natwest does with their online banking system.
- usherzx, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6Google already does this, we just don't have access to it yet.
It is coming...
when? I have no idea.- Octanus, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5Pretty much.. what data don't they track?
- miaow, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2I have wondered why this isnt done by webmail & secure accounts. Show up the IPs and that form of snooping is dead. It makes me wonder why all these tech designers are so well paid. I am also not sure why someone wants to mark a read email as unread.
- PacketScan, on 02/18/2008, -7/+2WOW that is a really good idea..
- peterzuni, on 02/18/2008, -0/+12lol, except for the fact that anyone snooping with half a brain would download the HTML attachment and then view the contents in a text editor.
More sites should just show when you last logged in and from what IP. They have this data...- cryptoki, on 02/18/2008, -2/+1do you have any idea why they dont do this?... we are not talking about alot of processing power here... to let the user keep a log... or at least post the most recent access (missed your post beore i, posted below.. oh well.)
- camelot2302, on 02/18/2008, -4/+1You're assuming that the people low enough to hack into an email account have as much as half a brain!
- petard, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3You are assuming that someone with half a brain is capable of hacking into an email account!
- javaroast, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4peterzuni hit the nail on the head. This idea is next to useless. Seriously if they are taking the time to mark as unread they obviously won't just open an attachment that will open a website.
- hospitalcio, on 02/18/2008, -0/+51People, your email is too boring to read. That is your secret weapon. Now go do something productive.
- bpacana, on 02/18/2008, -7/+2*****! i don't trust onestat. when you download their attachment it actually installs THEIR spyware.
- xfile087, on 02/18/2008, -3/+1Well unless your hacking into someones account and downloading this ***** you don't have a worry do you! And if some n00b haxxor does hack your account and download this ***** then it serves them right if they get spyware!!!
- Xondar, on 02/19/2008, -0/+15You can install spyware from a .txt file? Damn, better not tell the hax0rz that.
- skyzophrenyk, on 02/23/2008, -0/+1lol
- mrmrjk, on 02/18/2008, -3/+8Now the Scientologists won't be able to read your emails.
- alexandramw, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1um okay. goody.
- cryptoki, on 02/18/2008, -0/+16Can someone tell me why the big three (yahoo, hotmail, gmail) just dont time-stamp when the last time your account was accessed!!!!???
easy.. lets say you didnt log in yesterday.. and the timestamp says someone accessedyour account...
at least you could change your passwords on all your accounts if you were ever breached.
common IT !!! get with the program !- TheBuzzKiller, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure it is recorded in the database, just no interface for us to see it.
- ryanonfire, on 02/19/2008, -1/+13Tell goggle then http://mail.google.com/support/bin/request.py?cont ...
- cryptoki, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1i did a year ago... and no response (its a conspiracy !!!!! jk... lulz)
- soupdawg30, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1My server does it when I check my mail. Good stuff to know.
- cryptoki, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1you have web-based email that i can use, or is it a private sys?
- hongkongjapie, on 02/18/2008, -0/+1Would think that people not caring or knowledgeable enough to choose a password and setting up Secure IMAP also won't be able to set this up or will take the time to check the stats periodically and reset the trap once in a while.
- DamnMan, on 02/18/2008, -1/+3Remember kids if your breaking into someones account and see attachments saved in .htm make sure you open them in text editors instead. Disable macros in any word documents you open. Don't run execs etc etc. After all YOU got their password. who knows what other stupid ***** lurking around their account waiting to blow up in their(or your) face. Its a good idea but i don't think it will get some of the more intrepid crackers. I wouldn't rely on it as proof your account hasn't been breached. Especially now that the technique is front page digg material.
- Frost9999, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2You're right that it's a fairly simple trap and easily avoided. But for people who are peeping into their boyfriend's emails that have average to no knowledge.. it would be easy to get caught out this way. And it being on the front page of Digg is a good thing for security - it raises the issue and perhaps people will contribute with other ideas.
- Cerebron, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0This is very true for all hacky temptations. I speak from experience, if you got in, chances are good other, much worse, people will have/can get in and do bad things and you will catch the blame.
- AlienMushroom, on 02/21/2008, -0/+4I always feel proud that my spam emails can help somebody kill some time.
- oOoNyquiloOo, on 02/18/2008, -0/+10How about just changing your password, if you are paranoid enough to set a trap for someone who might not even exist?

- Rikkochet, on 02/18/2008, -1/+8I hate to point out the obvious, but why is it so difficult to just change your email password once in a while? Have we become that lazy?
- threemagic, on 02/18/2008, -1/+5"that lazy"?
so it's easier to do all the steps to set this trap and check it everyday then to just change your password.
I guess I'll take the lazy way out and change my password, yes, I am THAT lazy.- Kenzan, on 02/18/2008, -4/+3What you said made no sense at all.
- jmg703, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2it makes perfect sense. Rikko is saying we are too lazy to change a password instead of set up this "trap", but that argument doesn't make sense because setting up the trap actually takes more effort and isn't lazy at all. It's more ineffective than lazy.
- Kenzan, on 02/18/2008, -4/+3What you said made no sense at all.
- ligyron, on 02/19/2008, -3/+0I think you meant, "Have we all become that stupid"
It's clearly a whole lot easier to regularly change your email passwords
- threemagic, on 02/18/2008, -1/+5"that lazy"?
- Twelvevolts, on 02/18/2008, -0/+4My web mail (Fastmail) tells me what time the last login was whoever logged in. It also tell me when the last time someone tried to log in and was unsuccessful. Not too hard from there to figure out if someelse has logged in.

- Ap0x, on 02/18/2008, -1/+6emails are plaintext. Anyone with a hex editor and a packet sniffer can read them. Encrypt your mail, then no one can read 'em without your private key so hacking your account is moot.
http://gnupg.org/ - jcontra, on 02/18/2008, -1/+2This is impractical. With all that is possible on the internet nowadays, why should I have to monitor a page hit to secure my email? Can't Google do that for me?
- alexandramw, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4actually, you make a good point. e-mail hosting sites should shoulder some of the burden of better security

- Pinkertinkle, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3Great, now they can get my spam about penis size and free ipods.
- matt.rubin, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9Want to find out if your email is stolen?
Reply with your Email and Password here:- archer104, on 02/19/2008, -1/+5I was gonna reply with your email and password, just to be funny, but that would give me away.

I figured that such a long password would be GREAT security!

- nissan3469, on 02/19/2008, -3/+1goddamn this is funny to see how many people argue over something small like this. Someone has wrote this article to help people out
if you like the idea then use it and if not then don't use it lol
i personally agree that it is easy to change a password and i also don't really have anything in my inbox of much interest so i am not personally affected by some email hacker lol - sublime, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3This is a really a waste of time. I hate to contribute to the giant waste of time by even commenting on it. This article has you go over the river and through the woods just to get information that is right in front of you. The best way to see if others have access to your email is to check the log files. Change passwords if you are paranoid, and always check mail over SSL.
- void, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2How about change your passwords, and secret questions occasionally.
- say592, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5One of the largest problems with that is, 75% of people with enough brains to hack your email will have probably seen this.
Not to mention, there is no guarantee that they will open that message AND look at the attachment, even if it was luring. - lex0nyc, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3Don't those hit counters work on image loads? Don't most e-mail programs currently suppress remote images? I don't think this will actually work.
- MWeather, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3You're using a website counter instead of a virus why exactly?
- mark076h, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1not bad i think i will set this up
- Margota, on 02/19/2008, -2/+0OOPS
http://www.spymac.com/details/?2343238 - Flashman, on 02/19/2008, -1/+5Set your Gmail/Yahoo/etc to always load images from your email address. Then send an email to yourself with an inline tracking image that collects information about the browser which loads it. This partially mitigates the problem of people downloading the HTML attachment and opening it in a text editor, because the webmail client will automatically load the image.
- tabularosa, on 02/19/2008, -3/+0The work will teach you how to do it.

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are - Teddy Roosevelt. - gilgsn, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1Just change your password once in a while...
- B3000, on 02/19/2008, -2/+2At first I accidentally read the title of this article as "Make sure someone you know hacks you email". It makes a lot more sense now that my dyslexia has cleared up.
- xerigen, on 02/19/2008, -4/+2Hm.. I'm using it now and it seems like George Bush from Washington D.C. has been reading my mail. Anyone know who this is?

- crapmatic, on 02/19/2008, -0/+15This sucks... wait until I get my hands on whoever is at 127.0.0.1.
- paulievox, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3wow! i thought most of the diggers who understand this moved on the slashdot by now... well done sir.
- camelot2302, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Ha! Ha! A geek joke! I love it. :-)
