- Cykaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why is it microsoft's job to remove viruses from your OS? This isn't a security vulnerability in windows, it's a virus that people have infected themselves with because they want free porn and are gullible. You should be running some kind of virus scanner or at least frequently visit the online scans. MS has their own virus scanner online or one you can download for free. It's not their job to write a scanner/removal tool for every virus that comes out and release it immediately through windows update.
- t3hNinj4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People who are stupid enough to download and run .exe attachments in porn spam probably don't have very important documents anyway.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I hate to say it, but this isn't news at all. MS doesn't need to put out a patch unless there is a specific vulnerability in their OS that needs to be plugged. At this point, we can't stop someone from executing malicious code, so there's nothing to patch.
No digg. - oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I'd like to take this time to say this:
a) If you know about the virus, why haven't you already copied all of your MS office documents?
b) If you know about the virus, why haven't you already tried other methods to rid yourself of it?"
What if you don't know about the virus but could be saved from it's effects? Diggers know about it but there are millions of people that don't have a clue and they are (coincidentally?) the same people most likely to have the worm in the first place! Let's give the lemmings a chance...
"c) Why aren't you using OpenOffice? :P "
How does that help you? It doesn't attack the program, it attacks the documents! So using OpenOffice to edit that Word Format file does nothing to protect you! - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"All you need to do is practice safe computing habits, people. I haven't used anti-virus on my personal machines for years now, and never had a problem."
Same here, no spyware and no virus's for 2 years running, havent formatted my XP PRO box in over a year and it still runs smooth and boots fast - spjmm0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH scream if they put out patches when they have them scream at them when they follow a best practice. If you do not have the ability to control your PC then maybe you should not have one. Do you buy a car and expect the dealer to drive you around and make sure that you don't run into someone?
- saleens281, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21. you can download a patch from MS's site
2. anti-virus software already fixes this
3. MS live.com beta free, or the onecare service will clean it
4. it's rated a low-risk threat, why would they? - Kellan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4All you need to do is practice safe computing habits, people. I haven't used anti-virus on my personal machines for years now, and never had a problem.
- rodball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm just going to stay home on Friday... that'll take care of that!
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's the point of even writing it if it will be late?
Ok. We're going to kill a hostage every 20 minutes until we get the money.
Ooh, sorry, we only rescue hostages on tuesdays. And we're broke. - pmhesse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1NO DIGG!
Microsoft has already included the fix for the MyWife worm in the latest Malware Removal Tool
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
It just won't come through Windows Update until next week. If you're not running an up-to-date virus scanner and/or aren't willing to take a little extra care, you get what you deserve. - velvetshark, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Okay, to be fair, this is just bashing. No digg. Unless it's an MS vulnerability, MS isn't obliged to do anything. Maybe the patch hasn't been tested enough yet, and might cause more harm than good. I'm a linux lover and Apple Fanboy, but seven5 really needs to grow up.
- dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I'd like to take this time to say this:

~dtrinh
http://dtrinh.botsrus.net - fb1273, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is not a Microsoft bug or vulnerability. If you open the attachment in the e-mail you are a dumb ass.
- oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"They are also the people most likely to not have upgraded to Service Pack 2, or to have automatic updates enabled. So MS releasing a patch is not that likely to help them anyway.
What would help those people is being educated and informed about steps they can take to
avoid malicious software, perform backups of their important data, and update the other
tools (many of which are freely available) to protect them from such worms."
Every XP computer sold since SP2 came out has come preinstalled with it so that means that millions do have it and have automatic updates enabled by default. A few more may have turned it on manually. Finally, when SP2 came out, there was a GIANT push to get everyone updated. Microsoft has done it's due diligence and nobody has any excuse for running anything other than SP2 unless they have a pirate copy.
As for changing how people interact with e-mail, there's a lot of different scams out there and if the person is expecting or might have good reason to expect an attachment from a specific contact, they just might slip and click on it. That is human nature and it's not about to change anytime soon. Information workers routinely send and receive office documents every day by email as part of doing their job. A well protected system should scan attachments as they are coming in. Can you really blame the accountant that is just trying to do her job? Or do you blame MS for releasing an OS that is prone to attack? Or do you blame the virus writer that did it for fun or monetary gain?
Arrogance of the form "I don't run any protection whatsoever and I've never got anything" does nothing to help the people that just use computers as a tool and wouldn't touch them if they didn't have to in order to get the job done. - cryptor6, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wait, so what should we do to protect ourselves?
I never open any attachments from people I don't know and am careful and have all my anti-virus up to date, but I still don't want to chance it. - spytromics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1llbbl: Your statement that OpenOffice is just as good as Microsoft Office for businesses is naive. While OpenOffice may be able to read and write documents or spreadsheets, businesses are married to Microsoft Office because of its macro language, Access database front end (even if the data is in Oracle, DB2, or SQL Server), and Powerpoint. Couple that with the very tight integration of Office into Microsoft Exchange, in particular Public Folders, and Microsoft Sharepoint, and you'll find that switching to OpenOffice would cost a typical company millions more than licensing Office.
- mooseman089, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey guys I think I read that it deletes zip archives and rar archives too not just office files
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm on OS X so, sucks for Windows users.
- Cykaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@mistshadow2k4.. You're saying that no virus has ever been written or exists that can infect a *nix system? Stupidity is not a windows vulnerability. If you get a stupid person running *nix they can just as easily be infected but as TubaTech said there are a lot more viruses written for windows than there are for *nix, and the majority of *nix are a little more computer savvy than the average windows user. Yourself of course are not included in the list of tech savvy *nix users.
- pingviini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 PORN . EXE
PORN = PICTURES / VIDEOS && .EXE = PROGRAM
PICTURES / VIDEOS = PROGRAM ?
Its not that hard to figure out. - Matteu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@magik
"They haven't officially released it, but it was available for download if you wanted it from their website since Friday. This article is meerley some immature Microsoft bashing. No digg."
Yeah, it's available. For people who -pay- for their subscription service.
So yeah, they can totally fix the problem for you now IF you pay for it, even though it can affect most of you who don't have it.
Real smart. - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Open Office 2.0 is just as good"
Just as good might be not good enough in many situations. My partner's thesis didn't render properly in OOo, so she couldn't make the move (yet).
I am slowly moving to OOo. Note that for a business (I am running one) one has often to use the same stuff as the customers. I don't want to send a .doc file to one of my customers and get a reply back that it looks weird. It's a waste of time that costs more then just buying Office. But that's a thing that's beyond a lot of Linux/OO fanboys.

http://johnbokma.com/ - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For a second I was scared, then I realized you can only get it by downloading and running .exe attachments.
- magik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They haven't officially released it, but it was available for download if you wanted it from their website since Friday. This article is meerley some immature Microsoft bashing. No digg.
- theitmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This might have already been said but if so I didn't see it and it bares repeating. The subject of this story is misleading in my opinion. Calling it a patch makes it sound like MS is refusing to update it's operating system, when in fact they are just not updating their malware removal program.
True, this is bad, but not as damaging as it would be if it were a security whole in Windows which they weren't patching. This only effects those who rely on MS for their malware removal... which is dumb because as anyone knows... a TRUE malwar removal tool would uninstall XP. - jason7622, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There are a lot of office environments with users that will click anything. I see this thing doing a big sweep on a lot of offices world wide.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its idiotdic to flame MS for this one....all you MS haters should be mad at the virus creator, not the person being attacked. Grow up
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The funny thing is all of the MS fanboys over here defending MS to the death. So much dedication for a company that cares so little about them. Use a *nix system and you can open this virus emails for fun!

-Greg - halc5s, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Let's see, what would the outrage be like if they released a patch that was not fully tested and had a bug?
How many people haven't even applied the WMF patch yet?
How many people won't install this patch in a timely manner?
Practice safe computing and you have nothing to worry about. - nattybohman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thank God. It's already enough of a pain patching all the servers at work once a month. Who wants to do it everytime someone shouts "The sky is falling!!!" If MS releases the patch, I'll be obliged to work like a dog installing the patch within 72 hours only to do it all over again on Valentines day!! (next scheduled patch day).
Once a month is bad enough. Bravo Microsoft. - neurokaotix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ease of use != Stupid proof
- azy891, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0can't the worm be avoided this Friday simply by changing your windows clock time, setting it to maybe February 4th, or 5th, all except 3rd
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sad that that passes for acceptaqble. "I haven't had to rebuild my car's engine in a year!!" yippy."
Another idiot....using a totall different analogy for something completly non-related.... Alot of third party apps slow down the normal performace of Windows. Its not windows fault. NTFS never has to be defragged unlike FAT32. Windows doesn't have to be restarted unless updated. Third party apps are the programs that always want to restart windows. I'm starting to hate most Digg users now...they're mostly all shooting their mouths off about something they know little about... - Warptera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did it occur to you that they're still developing it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ive seen this worm called four different names now.

personally isnt the security concern.
the security concern is for those IT depts with 100's of "users" and dozens of servers.
"Until it can talk to exchange for contacts...
... until it includes an exchange (mapi and address book) compatible mail client...
... until it does the powerpoint thing better than it does...
... until it includes a Viseo type app that actually works as well as viseo and as smartly...
... open office will NEVER catch up in the business world."
please. you make is sound like all the applications have to come in 1 package or it cant be used.
Visio isnt in the MS Office suite. And there is no mail client in OpenOffice. So what exaclty are you trying to compare?
and at least OpenOffice Impress can pull data from an external data source. It makes PowerPoint look retarded. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just get One Care Live
http://www5.imagine-msn.com/minisites/onecare/Default.aspx?locale=en-us
Its Free and it will protect you.
Heres what One Care Live says:
If you are Green or Yellow, OneCare is helping protect you from the MyWife family of viruses
A new mass-mailing worm has appeared that can allow an attacker to destroy files on your computer. The MyWife worm can arrive on your computer in the form of an attachment to an e-mail or through a file transfer, often from a known or trusted source. We want you to be confident, though, that if your Windows OneCare health meter is green or yellow while you are connected to the Internet, we are helping to protect you from this known virus family via our automatically updating antivirus signatures and continuous real-time protection. If your status is red (at risk), please either take the requested action or go to the Help Center. We recommend that you make sure all your computers are up to date with antivirus software such as Windows OneCare.
Advisory: 0.0.0.9
Release date: 1/25/2006 - MODIfied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It makes sense, if they release a patch before the worm is released then it can be altered to work around the patch and infect machines. true this can be done after it is released as well but it will at least give a nice road block and buy time for someone to find out how to eliminate it permanently.
- mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bravo to Microsoft for sticking to their policies. I like how spjmm0 put it, the dealer doesn't drive you around so you dont hit people with your car.
gotta love how the misinformed twist things. it used to just be the media who did it. - LooterMcBeer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You Should write headlines for CNN cause this headline is as full of sh*t as all of theirs
Nowhere did microsoft say they refuse to release it nor have they even commented on it yet they just stated it would be released on patch day. - LeonThePro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Same here, no spyware and no virus's for 2 years running, havent formatted my XP PRO box in over a year and it still runs smooth and boots fast"
Sad that that passes for acceptaqble. "I haven't had to rebuild my car's engine in a year!!" yippy. - klbclem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sigh, i have a feeling I'm going to get a few knocks on my door this week. And microsoft isn't all bad the fact is that it produces an easy to use operating system and even though I also use linux i do realize that some people should barely be allowed to touch a computer, let alone recompile a kernel.
I would agree Microsoft is a touch evil, but then I realize this the Walmart era, you know the deal, RAPE EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE!!! - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oops I meant the WMF exploit! Sorry!
But Micro$oft still sux! - RaptorHavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kirk: "You left Spacedock without a patch?"

I can not wait until OS X can be put on a pc . - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Are you sure? Because no virus exists that deletes various file types on a *nix system. Maybe it has something to do with Windows being so poorly coded that it's extremely virus-prone to begin with? It seems like a virus would exist that would do the same on Unix if it was so easy to make one."
You obviously are a computer idiot...case in point: the reason why so many viruses come out for Windows is because of their market share exposure. Nearly all of the malicious hackers are writing viruses for Windows because that will cause the most damage. Linux have a number of vulnerabilities but aren't exploited because the virus won't be famous...simple as that. you got pwned n00b - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the same thing MicroSuck did about a month ago, with the patch to fix the Sony-BMG rootkit damage.
If you remember the digg story, corporations were starting to use the unofficial patch, and then finally, after planning to wait until Jan. 9th, MicroSuck finally did release their official patch a few days early.
It is like they are trying to 'shoot themselves in the foot'...and I am happy about it, to see such creeps self-destructing.
