- Dweller99, on 11/27/2008, -0/+65What could possibly go wrong?
- k3nt, on 11/27/2008, -1/+46"blu screen now kthx"
- jfdolier, on 11/27/2008, -0/+39I'm sensing a great prank idea...
- MidnightRIder77, on 11/27/2008, -0/+19Didn't this already hit the homepage?
I distinctly remember a post about a girlfriend finding your porn collection then asking for your cell phone. - Wulffy, on 11/27/2008, -0/+14Two steps away from Bond, but nice idea.
- jamble, on 11/27/2008, -1/+14This was on the front page about 2 days ago. Do people just submit anyway even when there's a duplicate?>
- DocHoliday22, on 11/27/2008, -2/+15Good idea. I welcome this.
If a thief steals a laptop at least it can be disabled. - rexykik, on 11/27/2008, -1/+13Yeah, until someone finds out how to generate a table of all disabling codes and runs an attack against your laptop.
- pbol01, on 11/27/2008, -0/+11Hmm, am I the only one who find the picture a bit odd?
- Jforsyth89, on 11/27/2008, -0/+8Yes, but it prevents the thief from using the laptop or selling it for profit. This lowers the incentive for the thief to even steal it at all.
I would guess that most regular users' laptops are stolen not for the data, but for the value of it. - glitch1985, on 11/27/2008, -0/+7"Girlfriend finds pron* hey hun can I see your phone real quick?" is the comment you were thinking about. Story was front page little over a day ago.
- cquilliam, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5Again? They killed my notebook yesterday.
Heres the txt message:
http://digg.com/security/Lenovo_kills_notebooks_wi ... - largobargo, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4Or just add a $70 harddrive with hardware encryption to the laptop...
- linagee, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3you need to 0WN it first
- sremick, on 11/27/2008, -1/+4Buried like the dupe it is.
- AmazingSteve, on 11/28/2008, -0/+3A small explosive device capable of blowing off the perps hands would be much better.
- Chairboy, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2So... then that means I can kill someone elses laptop with text message too. Interesting.
- antdude, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2[SMS' Chairboy's lappy] ;)
- Chairboy, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2Blast! (/posted from net cafe0
- Davers, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2"However, bear in mind that it doesn't protect your data, because someone can always remove the hard drive and read it with a different PC -- unless the data is encrypted. The article also doesn't say whether the SMS simply triggers a BIOS password. There are ways around those...."
Well yeah, but I have a feeling that 95% of petty notebook thieves, when presented with a screen saying "this notebook has been remotely locked and cannot be accessed" before it even gets to windows will probably not bother with taking it apart to jump some pins to clear the CMOS or removing the hard drive to steal your data. - richw, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2thats all we need, computers that can be killed by simply sending a text message. lets just keep making things easier and easier for hackers who like to destroy peoples computers.
- proficient, on 11/27/2008, -1/+3oh shi---
- seltaeb4, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2What's with Norman Rockwell up there in the pic?
- sexybobo, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2Well since Monday i know i will get at least 4 calls from people who have forgotten there passwords over the 4 day weekend.
I am guessing more then one person will forget the reset code from when they set the laptop up and used it once 3 years ago. which will cause Lenovo tech support to unlock the pc anytime some one calls to get it unlocked. - InfernoX, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2They could sell the harddrive? might as well at that point.
- InorganicMatter, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Very nice. Being able to remotely self-destruct missing/stolen devices is quickly becoming an essential (almost expected) tool in any competent IT department. Can't have trade secrets escaping.
- Spartacusprime, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1My undergraduate gave out Lenovo laptops as part of tuition. I see a potential problem here...
- seavers, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1I have something similar on my Nokia E-series. It can be locked remotely with a text message containing your password.
- rstarr, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1This seems safe.
- dhughes, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1 But for now it just disables the system, the data is still there.
- chriscalifornia, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1what, any notebook? Or do I need to own it first?
- connieLingus, on 11/27/2008, -1/+2...and there will bid a 0-day crack for that "feature"
- chriscalifornia, on 03/31/2009, -2/+3I have a good idea for laptop security. Put a granade inside the case and pull the pin out. Anything out of the ordinary happens, BOOM! Dead... everyone... dead.
- sh0rtstop00, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1I bet it'll be another product placement on "24"
- InorganicMatter, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Enough to stop 99% of thiefs.
- acrodev, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1LOL. I F'D UR HD
- linagee, on 11/27/2008, -1/+2You get charged for an outgoing and incoming text message?
- linagee, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1How will 24 "hollywoodize" this feature?
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Pipe, activate!
- tomz17, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1The fatal flaw in this plan is the battery requirements necessary for watching the control channel of the cell network. This means that your laptop cannot be constantly listening for an SMS without taking a big hit on standby time. In other words, you can only get the SMS when the laptop is on, and the radio is powered up.
Once this becomes common, thieves will just pull the SIM card out of the radio for GSM systems (most of the planet), or just pull the EVDO radio out before powering up. If the firmware checks for the SIM/Modem OR the radio is integrated into the board (AFAIK no current radios are), then you can just cut the antenna lead, or file through a resistor to detune the radio. - DarkLance, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1first time I'm reading it. maybe it wasn't time for this kind of story before. everyone's gotten over their loss and have moved on, we can talk about this now. Get over it man, you gotta move on! I can feel your pain http://www.phx411.com/wordpress/images/2007/june/b ...
- MidnightRIder77, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Precisely the comment I was thinking of.
- sh0rtstop00, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1have you seen the 24 special the past sunday? you got Cisco System, Apple Computer, Hyundai Genesis, Nextel Communication..probably few more but I stopped paying attention to them.. Jack Bauer or those government agent could send a text message to detonate a bomb hidden in a laptop or stuffs like that.. or just erase top secrets
- jaymulder, on 11/27/2008, -0/+1Couldn't you just flash the BIOS?
- daridave, on 11/28/2008, -2/+2AND YOUR CAPS LOCK IS STUCK AS WELL, MAN. Did Microsoft pay you some royalties when they named their tool "Windows Defender" ?!?!? And damn, I didn't know they used to joke about Windows machines in the 80's! I used MS-DOS back then, geez, I must have been stuck in the 70's !!!
- scribat, on 11/28/2008, -1/+1Out of the ordinary such as just carrying it in a bag down the street? Boom...you...dead.
- Rudegar, on 11/27/2008, -2/+2good old winnuke :P
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -1/+1Microsoft beat them to this, but it's more advance and all you have to do is use the notebook normally.
