- bffoley, on 03/16/2009, -0/+164Do you refer to your whole computer as "The CPU"? Then most likely.
- JoeF8577, on 03/16/2009, -2/+141Botnet? Maybe
Skynet? Most definitely. - naner, on 03/16/2009, -0/+85The entirety of this article consist of "Press Ctrl + Alt + Del and look at the network activity. If it's high, you might be part of a botnet" and "Try these three antivirus products we recommend."
- pHr34kY, on 03/16/2009, -3/+60FFS. Look at task manager? What lame advice.
Close all open apps, run netstat -b and see what's connecting to a weird server in the Ukraine. - TheGrammarNazi, on 03/16/2009, -11/+54These people that say "I have a Mac!" think they are claiming superiority when the rest of the computer world is surprised to see them tie their own shoes.
- thebigredcat, on 03/16/2009, -0/+40awesome. i used to work for a computer company, people referred to the computer as "hard drive", "the cpu", "the brains" and "the modem".
- bashnu, on 03/16/2009, -2/+35 Is Your Brain Part of a Diggnet?
Being part of a diggnet is no fun. Your mind becomes your worst enemy, watching everything you do, collecting all of your secrets, and then delivering all that ... - jsffive, on 03/16/2009, -17/+49I have a linux system. It's not an issue. But then again, even if I did have a bot running on my computer, it would be compensated by the fact that I'm not wasting any clock pulses whatsoever on anti virus software and firewalls, because I use the repositories for software, and I have a router between my computer and the gateway.
I just love the Windows users out there, who "protect" themselves by installing something like Norton's Security Suite... and can't figure out why their computer is running so slow. And they draw a complete blank when I tell them that they no longer have a "computer" so much as an "anti-virus machine", that will occasionally do word processing, or web browsing...
Priceless.
And no, I'm not suggesting that everyone switch to linux... If you can't work on a computer, you're too dumb to use it. However, I no longer extol the virtues of Windows. - lilrabbit129, on 03/16/2009, -0/+28"The brains" and "The CPU" are pretty accurate, in the context of most people.
If a layman can tell me where his monitor, "cpu" and internet connection is I figure they're ahead of the curve. - lex0nyc, on 03/16/2009, -0/+26You mean they had it on a shelf for 1.9 days, or they were just incompetent?
- MattB123, on 03/16/2009, -0/+20This article doesn't seem very good to me. Checking for network activity when your typical network-using apps are closed may or may not indicate bad activity. What about stuff like Windows Update (or other packages like Norton as well as lots of other self-updating software)?
It's good to be aware, but using this criteria will produce a lot of false positives. - minigig, on 03/16/2009, -2/+21reinstalling windows is much easier 2 hours tops
- DiggityDugged, on 03/16/2009, -0/+19One of my family members actually had their PC submit to the powers of a botnet. It was jaw-dropping to see it in action. The number of processes would start at the excessive count of 70 or 80 that I guess for them was "normal" but it would then sometimes sky rocket up to 600 processes before it would lock up the entire computer. Every process was a three or four letter/number name, and YES, it did often happen only when I was Googling for information about botnets. It did know. It was that impressive. I think the only way I could ever come closer to feeling that a computer was conscious in the near future was if I moved to Japan.
- Thoku, on 03/16/2009, -1/+19Its fairly safe to assume that they are so limited that the result is fairly negligible. There aren't enough people running Linux to make the botnet profitable for the black hats. Also Linux users tend to be more technically adept (as a whole) and therefore as a worm writer it would be fairly stupid to try and go after the people who already monitor their machine fairly close and know how to get rid of the viruses when there are millions of people who don't know what they are doing and don't even upgrade their machines with the latest security patches. Conficker is running off a 6 month old (since patch) flaw but still has a huge number of machines.
tl;dr - Why fight marines when you can gun down people in a school? - moose26, on 03/16/2009, -2/+20Sorry, but I use a Mac and the real truth is no computer is immune. It may just be harder to get a bot installed on a Mac since this is more of a Windows issue, but we are still not 100% safe.
When Skynet goes online in 2012, every computer, even Macs will be affected... LOL - HelAom, on 03/16/2009, -0/+17why you got dugg down I don't know... maybe by someone who doesn't know what netstat does? =)

- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -1/+18Dunno why you're getting harsh burial treatment. Bloated anti-viral/malware software will slow PC's down.
- cutchyacokov, on 03/16/2009, -0/+16First of all this has nothing to do with the article.
Second: No drive manufacturer that I am aware of includes data recovery as part of the warranty it really isn't something you could/should expect of Seagate.
Third: Did you try Spinrite (grc.com/spinrite) on the drive before sending it back? Do you have any any sort of backup solution? This cannot be considered Seagate's fault, learn to take responsibility for your own data. - BossKey, on 03/16/2009, -5/+20Tell that to all the scientists and Unix coders who consciously chose Macs.
I have a Mac but I'm not complacent. In addition to running monitors like Little Snitch, I glance at the freeware bandwidth meter installed in my menu bar. It should be at zero most of the time. And it is. You can also keep an eye on your modem activity light. If there is bandwidth being used, especially upload bandwidth, I make sure I know what it's for, or else I look into it. - isunktheship, on 03/16/2009, -0/+15umm my computer just said I'm the problem with this world.. should I be worried?
- ZeNiTH456, on 03/16/2009, -4/+18I'm a linux user also and you have to be a fool to think there aren't botnets for linux.

so he was answering the question, "Is Your PC Part of a Botnet?"
it was a joke, as if his computer was answering in binary - Cybrwolf, on 03/16/2009, -3/+16I'm not going to digg you down, but you really shouldn't rely on "never" getting an infection.
I too am a Mac user/owner/lover, but I take security very seriously. I two firewalls (Netbarrier & LittleSnitch) on each Mac I own. Plus ClamXAV, and the entire network is behind an Untangle Security Gateway.
Security is everyone's problem! Macs will someday get a true virus, when I don't know, but I will be prepared as I can be. - MattB123, on 03/16/2009, -0/+12Why can't you just restore from your regularly made backups?
- molobolo, on 03/16/2009, -0/+12Dell does this.
- rhabd0mancer, on 03/16/2009, -0/+11TCPView is a nice little program for monitoring connections.

- Mavosa, on 03/16/2009, -3/+14Oh please, you might as well be a zombie yourself if you believe macs cannot be infected with a botnet or even a virus. The popularity of macs are rising, and yes there was a time where macs were not all that popular and did not have many viruses, but thats changing.
Even firefox is being updated consistently nowadays to keep up with all the security holes more and more hackers are finding. Its catching up to IE7(soon 8) nowadays...
I actually work for an antivirus company, I tend to find most people infect themselves through sheer stupidity and lack of common sense. Just because something says you should download this software for a free scan after saying you have 98375 viruses doesn't mean you should. Free software is not actually free is most cases. - darkmagician777, on 03/16/2009, -3/+13BURIED! - FOR PROMOTING WINDOWS ONECARE CRAP!
Even the Free AVG IS better then Windows Onecare. Free Comodo firewall or Free PC tools firewall plus(I like PC tools) better then Onecare.
People can also kill there computers with too much security. One firewall, One Active Virus Scanner and One active Spyware remove and your done. - inactive, on 03/16/2009, -2/+12"I USE UBUNTU!!!" --says the n00b with udp.pl chugging away happily in his /tmp
- bashnu, on 03/16/2009, -1/+11Standard bot reply.
- lex0nyc, on 03/16/2009, -1/+10I'm not a MS fan, I just don't want to spend so much money on a mac.
Spent $700 on my current box. If I'd bought an equivalent Mac, I would have spent $1900. - SolCheetah, on 03/16/2009, -1/+10Yes. It's called a computer. Just like a person without hands is called a person, a computer without monitor and keyboard is still a computer. Do we have a word for all parts of a person, except for the hands? Do we need one?
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -0/+9Sir, I do believe that your system may indeed be infected by a botnet. Please post your email address so that I may send you a file that will fix your system. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
- akereny, on 03/16/2009, -10/+19Useful info to know
- jer2eydevil88, on 03/16/2009, -1/+10PROTIP: if your computer has been compromised to that extent just reformat it... Saves you time and it'll be a great learning experience if you haven't done anything like that before.
- inactive, on 03/16/2009, -3/+12I use Linux, not an expensive DRM infected Mac.
- InorganicMatter, on 03/16/2009, -1/+9A college whose URL ends in .name instead of .edu? What kind of stupid do you think we are?

- gizram84, on 05/30/2009, -2/+10quick all microsoft fanboys, keep burying this!!
the funny thing is, kilimangaro is right.. - mborys88, on 03/16/2009, -1/+9All non techy people please refrain from even commenting in this thread. It's over your Twitter using heads.
- BPShirase, on 03/17/2009, -0/+8Yes, but its my botnet.
- misconfig, on 03/16/2009, -2/+10No.
- mmittimm, on 03/16/2009, -10/+18*Laughs at all the fanboys who just sit there waiting for an article like this to come up so they can brag about how their Mac/Linux machine doesn't get spyware*
- sloach, on 03/17/2009, -0/+7I always called it the "box". Everyone seems to know what I mean by that.
- donkz, on 03/16/2009, -0/+7Indeed! Here's all of it:
If your computer running slowly, shut down all applications and use 3 fingers to press alt + ctrl + delete. See if anything fishy is running. Make sure you have antivirus.
Very valuable info. - neuber, on 03/16/2009, -1/+8"yes"?? I bet you think you're cool.
