- victorycig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, this does look fake... I wouldn't be at all surprised if it's just a site to collect email addresses.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh, god. This looks so, so fake. Holy christ.
- DarkZen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Marked as Inaccurate, This is just FUD...
If you watch you can tell that there is NO cam in the latch..that's metal reflecting + added effects using video editing software. Also patching Firmware is a nasty business...you do a patch wrong or loose power the device is dead.. If the cam is really there the only thing they could really do to patch the "firmware" is to somehow patch the bios to NOT see the device (never seen that before? ...correct me if im wrong)
I am also yet to find a system that you can patch the bios without actually being AT the system... Again, correct me if you know of a laptop that allows this.. (this usually means attaching a external floppy drive to boot off then run a bios flashing utility, and NO i have NEVER seen this done over the net because of how easy it is to fry The bios and also because your patching the very subsystem that RUNS the rest of the computer...)
This is probably more likely a social experiment or just all around FUD. If you can prove me wrong by all means post below but don't digg me down because you don't think im paranoid enough, anyone with info like that would release the company name of the exploitable device or the method used to archive the exploit. - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I will never feel safe fapping ever again.
- Sarki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Agreed, FUD. Marked as inaccurate.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i love how at the end it gives an offer for "more information" and collects info from people. if he actually cares to help innocent people out then he would post the info on that site right there. SPAM
- fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in a word, bollocks.
- dandiemer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wrong post prime....sorry
- nixdoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone identify the guys being put on show in the video? If someone traces them, they can actually testify if this is true or just FUD.
- acoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1First off if a laptop or any computer device had a hidden hardware, a window would pop up "found new hardware" and then it would want to instal the cameras device driver. Alternatively if it is already installed , go to the device driver in system tools and if it is there you will see it. If not then it could be disabled on the BIOS which in this case, Not.
Please Applaud me because this is the first time I am saying it on digg,
........LAME, FUD, SPAM.
thankee - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't is there, you tell me. Oh wait...
- kcopp87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Marked as inaccurate. Face it, go to his homepage, it's just some guy with a crappy sense of web design trying to drum up some easy money from overly paranoid people who know nothing about the computers they're using.
EDIT: Finished reading the whole home page. What a load of crap. Surely you can't actually believe this? - frak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1surely you can just tape over it or something?
- yum9me, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I don't think the people know it is there. Anyway, its is really creepy!

"enables carriers to perform firmware patch upgrades by taking remote control of a device, eliminating the need for end users to perform these"
Paranoia is good to have... I don't know for sure about laptops, but remotely hackable (IMO) firware is being built into mobile/cell phones. That was almost 2 years ago.
To hide a something like a device it would only require a windows patch and not a BIOS patch anyway to hide something from a users device manager tree. That would be the easiest approach since the lappy manufacturers provide customised copies of Windows all the time - PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Symantec, Slam FireFox all you want ya programs take frekin 3 days to start up!
- pef2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0How would you really know where to put some tape if there really is a camera?
Fake or not, I love a little paranoia! If cell phone companies are making cells that can be changed remotely and brag about it, then I reckon just about anything is possible.
Who trusts BIG brother anyhow... I sure don't
