- ovidius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Major overkill... and a waste of money. This is nothing more than something to make the community feel (falsely) safer.
Nothing replaces the security of a good monitoring system with LIVE guards. I work for a company that develops the software behind security solutions... there is nothing that is really foolproof. A good smart card system with biometric verification is tough to beat, but there are ways. Most fingerprint scanners are 2D only (although some new ones that can use ultrasound and even scan through latex gloves are just coming out)... and can be fooled by photos, prints pressed into gum, and other tricks. Iris scans are more difficult to hack, but they will work off of an image in most cases.
The real questions for the school district: how many exterior doors do you allow entrance through (one should be all for a secured building), and what is your procedure for the guard who is monitoring the entrance? If there is no guard, then this is a gaping hole in the plan. Just slip through the door when a parent gains access and you are in. Or just use some social engineering and gain entrance by convincing someone that the Iris scan worked yesterday for you, but it just won't work today... - elrawtic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It'd be a lot cheaper if a faculty member just asked the kid if that is their parent who is picking them up.
- Anubis2051, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whats Funny is that I could see my school doing this. Most schools these days are over paranoid and will do anything to make parents think that their kids are more secure. In fact, my school, a brand new building, is COVERED with security cameras, but we only have one police officer in the building, and no guards. We also only allow entrance through one door, and it is right next to the office. The only thing is, no one seams to notice if you walk through this door (after first period that is) .
- nmcglennon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why don't they allocate some of that money and either clean up the beaches or take the circles out of the New Jersey turnpike.
- SbooX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good intentions, and a not-so-evil use for the tech, but holy crap thats a lot of $ to pay! I know, theres no price to pay for the safety of a child, but seriously, thats a lot!
Why not spend that money on teaching kids about the importance of only leaving with your parents, and have enough teachers around so that it can be monitored? - EvilBadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1screw new and better books for the kids, lets get pointless iris scan devices.
- kloud213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is why every kid should have a school voucher instead of having public schools. i would much rather them spend the money to teavh my child how to read than to put in an iris scanner. all these teachers and faculty keep saying they need more money but if they waste the extra money on this crap whats the point. our school system is majorly flawed.
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No wonder new jersey's broke.
- polo3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opposed, but how non-evasive is this technology?
Oops! The scanning light overloaded and you are now blind in one eye...
MMLZE4h - tont0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"When a parent arrives to pick up their child at one of three grade schools in the Freehold Borough School District, they'll need to look into a camera that will take a digital image of their iris. That photo will establish positive identification to gain entrance into the school."
how is this a waste? im not sure if anyone here has read the article, but its to stop people who arent their parents from coming up and picking them up. when a crazy neighboor comes to campus and says 'come on little billy we are going for a ride', a child doesnt know better and will probably hop in. things like this will stop it.
people say 'put more guards there' but whats the cost of that? 40k-50k/year per guard? so that means this will pay for itself in 2-3 years. - lineman60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool, but a tad bit of overkill.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Oops! The scanning light overloaded and you are now blind in one eye..."
In related news, a sudden migration of frightened New Jersey parents makes New York the richest state in the U.S. No word on MTA-TWU contract negotiations, though they are now said to be "super effective". - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I only want this if it has the X-men Computer voice and says "Welcome Professor" every time one scans in.
- neodiablo22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FOR GODS SAKES WONT SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, there's ownage in bunches today. First the MPAA found copying movies (shocker!), then Google's predecessor gives up trying to be #1 (meh), now parents going through this--and I'm just waking up.
Whether it's bin Laden getting run over by a Mack truck, HBO streaming online for free, or Richard Stallman working for Microsoft, everything suddenly seems possible. ;) - MasterIamNot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm moving to New Jersey. I'll feel much safer. And now my kids can't be abducted by UFOs anymore. Whew, glad to see someone is starting to believe the stories.
- Jonsey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"$400,000 of our tax money... spent on something pointless and overkill."
Why does that sound firmillar? - Digital.Totem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not add automated gun turrets while they are at it?
- ratajik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So just wondering... how many times have kids been snatched from this school district in the last year? 5?
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why not add automated gun turrets while they are at it?"
definitely. All of this would be payed out of taxes of course because everybody knows there's nothing better to spend it on. Especially not seniors who can't even pay for their medicine and stuff like that. /sarcasm - TK99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How long before an armed nuke sits in the basement, that way they can vaporize any would be school shooters.
Nuclear Blast Wave, only way to be sure. - smith262, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, what a good use of government money :)
Anyway, why do they need this? Human gaurds would work better, and be much less costly. Also, what happens to those pictures? Are they kept, becasue if so, the ACLU is going to go *****. - kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01984
- evanfraser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting... So often kids get snatched by parents who aren't supposed to have custody over the child. Normally they just keep lists of who is allowed to pickup which students after school. But hey, technology for technology's sake is cool too I guess.
- at165db, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$400,000 of our tax money... spent on something pointless and overkill.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why dont the use the money to buy laptops for all the kids =D
that be hella sweet - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why does everyone living outside of New Jersey swear they know more about the state then people living outside of New Jersey...
The turnpike isn't that bad, you're just running along with the joke... it's just the industrial area near port Elizabeth that smells... and NJ isn't broke, don't know who told you that... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This needs to be rolled out for the entire country ASAP
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we need to invent robocops and put one in every school.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW, Live guards... don't mean *****... half of them are there to collect a paycheck and couldn't give a rats-ass if 2 shady looking guys walk into the school... as long as they don't have to get up from that desk or interrupt their crossword puzzle...
- binarypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What next? GPS buttplugs?
- opticwind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wouldn't this be a state tax, not a federal tax? Meaning we (not NJ-ers) don't have to pay?
- wardrive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And the school system is suffering... but we have cool gadgets.
- BMWcrazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg cuz I live in the same area. awesome
- tsoutsas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn, this totally hits home for me! I went to these school, I need to make some phone calls now since I'm in the industry.
- Narrator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Three words: Diminishing Marginal Returns
- PhilliesBlunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder if Dr. Weird got the contract for this....
- ersatzphi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*experiment
PS If you haven't seen all of Jersey, you need to shuttup with your bad stereotypes. If we have so many problems with pollution and roads, why are we the richest state in the country? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Note that this is for parents who come to pick up their children. NOT for the children (or faculty?) themselves.
Still stupid. This is a lot like those people who work with the police department to convince you that you need to put together a kit containing your child's hair, foot print, finger prints, DNA, photos, etc. Because of course, having a piece of paper with your child's fingerprint on it and a lock of their hair is going to prevent them from being kidnapped or help you get them back safely in the unheard of event that they're abducted.
***** idiots. I hate this world sometimes. - sk8ngame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, this has gotten out of hand, I mean, come on!
If some stupidass kid doesn't know what his parents look like, and this is directed towards parents, then they obviously aren't learning anything in school - ersatzphi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm 5 minutes from Freehold, very much a middle-upper class area. Not really surprised with this eye scan thing, but I think people don't realize that this is an expirement. You don't all need to go crazy thinking this is going to be 1984 come true or that it's a waste of tax dollars. It's simply a social expirement and I think it will be interesting to see what the outcome is. Heck, maybe I'll drive over to one of those schools and see what happens when I'm rejected lol.
- jnmlmz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here is another example of the PTA not having a clue...now Tax Payer funds are going to DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION in West Virginia School.

If parents would just get off their lazy asses and take some responsibility, these type of programs would not have to suggested, let alone implemented. - jnmlmz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$400K!! for three schools, for a technology that is 45% accurate at best. I have never seen live prints that only have 7-20 minutiae points. More on the order of 80- 160 minutiae points.
You can put 66 livescan stations (@$15K each), with an FBI certified singer finger scanner. Fingerprinting is 100% with a know source; 99.8% from a database.
A parent swipes their KID RELEASE card, which contains their minutiae and jpg photo of the authorized parent embedded in a 2-D barcode; file size of minutiae is 200bytes.. The livescan prompts for the parents fingerprints, the system extracts minutiae and does a local match. The photo with confirmation is displayed. An attendant lets the parent in.
When the parent does not have their KID RELEASE card, the parents minutiae is sent to central database where the identification is done. The attendant receives the response to allow entrance.
This process is used all over the world for critical processes. Including prisoner release, passport issuance, driver's license issue, social benefit issue and fraud detection. California's entire social services system is based on two fingerprint minutiae identification.
This guy Bolling sold them a bag...must be a tie to the mob...how else can you justify this weak technology for the cost. The ROI is not there.
