- Winters, on 10/12/2007, -2/+67Wow. I was kind of surprised by the end of the article.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51And we'll all laugh when you dont have the same success.
- nox327, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42Lets see if a middle eastern looking person can go through that fast. they should have tested that.
- cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38"Ugh if only I could provide a DNA sample or something."
Coincidentally, "Ugh" is one of the most common utterances when providing a DNA sample. - Darwinwasright, on 10/12/2007, -11/+43It sys he was polite and well dressed. I am also going to guess white. So basically he had pretty much everything in his favor while trying this.
- Casedot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31yeah me too. It _almost_ seemed like they let him go through easier because they saw a person standing behind the plexiglass taking notes on what they did...
if i saw someone standing aside taking notes on how I did my job I would make sure to do it right.
It's pretty interesting that you can fly without ID. I didn't even know that. - projectducky, on 10/12/2007, -13/+43Because anyone knows that a black guy, well dressed up and polite wouldn't have been able to do this. Please.
- tysat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+30That little time to get through with no ID?
Why ever go in with ID if you can get through that fast? - radioastro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I had a similar (if accidental) experience. My wallet was in my carry on rolling bag. My friend and I traveling together decided to check our carry ons, since we were flying home.... WHOOPS! I got through with a nearly identical experience, no real fuss at all.
- madholepunch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28how the hell will you get drinks on your layover if you don't have ID? worst idea ever...
- zcreem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27ID is no guarantee of anything, and that's the point of the article.
Had to smile though when he jumped the queue.
Anything to declare Sir?
Only the crack in my arse! - StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28They probably tried, but couldn't find one suicidal enough.
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Because if everyone did it, it would soon become the slower of the two options.
- madholepunch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21i'm 29 in a month and i get carded like a 16 yr old wearing sunglasses and a fake mustache...
- samurailynn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22I don't think he meant that as a statement about black people. It was probably meant as a statement about national security's fear of anyone who looks middle eastern
- asplodzor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Most likely it's because you have boobs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22I'm not taking my ID when I fly next time!
- jkenneth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Very nice to know. Looks like I might be able to fly after all. Considering I've been battling for three years to get a form of photo identification, but to get ID I need ID it seems. Ugh if only I could provide a DNA sample or something.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16A DNA sample? I think the government's getting to you jkenneth...
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19it is a swastika, but not a nazi swastika otherwise it would be rotated 45 degrees. the swastika is actually a holy hindu and buddhist symbol and can be both "left" facing or "right" facing, try brushing up on your history
- techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Fired on the spot eh...right.
- BaileyCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16He was "fired on the spot" because this was his 4th day of work. It turned out that I hadn't actually purchased a return flight, so he was basically let me fly for free because of his error. And this apparently wasn't his first mistake. And by "fired on the spot", I mean the manager on duty told me that. I didn't see them take his badge or urinate on him.
- trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"Actually, I don't think that was the outcome he was expecting. He took the dare to prove them wrong (that you CAN'T get one a plane without ID)."
No, he took the dare to proove that you COULD. - Powermac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Awesome outcome. Good for him!
- SpacePirate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14It has nothing to do with the fact that he was either black or white. In all honesty, in this day and age, it was most likely because he wasn't Arabic (despite the fact that Iranians are actually caucasian, and that many Islamic extremists are also white).
- Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13This is crazy! they make a big deal about how if you don't have your ID you aren't getting on their plane.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I was expecting some kind of abuse contrary to court ruling, score +1 for the USA, so this puts us at ... negative .... oh gosh I don't have that many fingers and toes.
- BaileyCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+162 months ago on I was scheduled to leave Hollywood and fly back to Denver. I get to the ticket counter and start talking with the counter person. He gives me my ticket and I get to the first checkpoint. Hand them my ID and they wave me through. The second checkpoint at the top of the escalator ... same thing, they check my ID and let me go through. Then I get to the security screening station. I get picked to be hand scanned. They always do this with cowboys.
I get to my gate and look at my ticket to see when my flight arrives in Denver and I notice that the counter person has given me someone else's ticket. Our names weren't even remotely similar. I have no idea how I could have waltzed right through those ID checks when my ID doesn't match my ticket.
I walk all the way back to the ticket counter and explain the situation. The counter person was fired on the spot, but the security people weren't questioned at all. - Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Not really an issue if you're over 40, which I assume this guy probably was. People of that age almost never get carded. Hell, I'm 25 and the only time I get carded is at the grocery store, and that's a recent development.
- TomClements, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Try using a homemade fake ID. (use your real name) I know a guy that uses a fake for a university that doesn't even exist. if they say "uh, this is laminated with packing tape and printed on an ink jet..." he just says sorry and acts like he pulled out the wrong one. worked on domestic and international flights.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I would say the reason why he got through so quick was because so few people have to go that route. If everyone started "forgetting" their ID the line to the security at that point would get longer and it would take much much longer to get through security.
- ebrandsberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I have done this several times actually. Check http://www.papersplease.org/ for more information on the issues relating to this. If you state you HAVE your ID, but will not present it, they won't let you through. You will only get through if you state you lost it, etc. This event was organized after I successfully made it through in San Jose, although the screeners told me that the process was based on me not having an ID, not my refusing to show one. Kinda odd to make that differentiation.
- LtCarter47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I wonder if this also works when you are checking in to get your ticket... I would think it would be necessary at that point so they know they are giving the ticket to the right person. Although, with paperless tickets coming soon, that might not be an issue.
- owenstarkiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7But that's the point. The assumption is that Evil-Big-Brother will grind you to the wall. Except they acted professional. They did their job. There was no death squad. George Bush didn't show up and demand that the traveler was spied on. Everything *worked*.
- calacak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The difference is that other countries require identification, aka a passport.
Here in the USoA we are supposed be allowed to travel within our borders without showing papers. - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"You're fired!" as he whispers to wait in the back until you're out of sight.
- JakeMcMahon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10That's stereotypical. What do you think they do when a black man comes in? Offer him a bucket of KFC?
- Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10get with today? The swastika is still used around the world. That left leaning swastika is not a nazi swastika. Read a book or two.
Just one example for your ignorant ass:
"The swastika is found all over Hindu temples, signs, altars, pictures and iconography where it is sacred. It is used in all Hindu weddings, festivals, ceremonies, houses and doorways, clothing and jewelry, motor transport and even decorations on food items like cakes and pastries."
That's over a billion people using the swastika regularly and not relating it to nazism. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@RexKwando
I'm not trying to evade paying my taxes even though I do believe that much of the taxing is unconstitutional. The real problem is the privately owned monopoly the Federal Reserve has. The unconstitutional taxing is just another symptom of this problem. That's what this movie will bring attention to :
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1616088001333580937 - JalenJade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes but he has that telepathic paper that shows what he wants the other person to see... So The Doctor would have ID
- jayhawk88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Man, no one can fluff a non-story like Wired, huh? They spend 3/4 of an article getting you ready for this big exciting read of how one man Fought The System (tm) and exposed to the very quick all the ridiculous freedom-eliminating rules and regulations, and then it's "And then he got through with very little hassle and everything the screeners did was perfectly legitimate and reasonable, The End". You can almost smell the disappointment from here.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've been with people who have gotten home from Italy and France without passports (they had copies though), or any other kid of ID.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've never been carded once... maybe it's because I live in Indiana
- playerZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"They always do this with cowboys."
Um... ok, that's the weirdest thing i've read all day, why on god's green earth would airlines be suspicious of cowboys???
Heh. But anyway, you should check your ticket next time for "SSSS" printed somewhere. Every single time I fly out of SFO (yes, every single time without exception, and yes, only SFO) I get to watch them unpack my bags. They were actually kind enough to point the SSS thing out to me around the 4th time, i forget what it stands for (somethingseomthing secondary screening i think), and they explained that the ticketing system prints that in a couple of different situations: randomly, if you meet certain criteria (no checked baggage, one-way flt, paid w/ cash etc), or if your name is on a list. They wouldn't give me any more info (the criteria i mentioned were found through more research, and may be speculative). I am apparently on a list (only at SFO) because even now, I generally fly out of Oakland (and various NYC and DC area airports) without problems but every once in a while I have to use SFO and it still prints the SSSS and I still get to watch them go through my underwear, even with round trip flights, checked baggage, my credit card, etc. I can speculate for days about how I would end up on a list, but there is no way to find out and nothing at all I can do about it (to my knowledge).
I also have a friend who works for a law firm in DC and lives in NYC. He takes the shuttle every day. He was recently pulled out of line, had federal marshalls draw their weapons on him, and after being detained and interrogated, told not to leave the country or purchase any firearms because he's now on a watchlist. No explanation was given. This dude is *squeaky* clean. Also white, born in the US, and usually very well dressed. - melvs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I flew southwest within the last 6 months with a friend who had no form of ID at all and he was allowed on with only a little extra screening, maybe 5 mins more then everyone else.
- iamdw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6One person - "having gotten through screening perhaps even faster than he would have if he'd shown ID"
compared with a line "filled with travelers facing a 20-minute crawl to the magnetometers". He also said he was very polite, and well-dressed. Image just one more person who went the same route....
The point of the article was that they lost a court battle to find out the "real" reason ID checks are performed. Kind of idiotic if you ask. Though i understand the larger point of having more ID access checks, i have no real problem of not being in a place i am not supposed to be. Anyone else as "crazy" as me feel the same way? ... - Optimus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Actually, the Nazi swastika has the arms oriented to the right and tilted. The swastika is a holy symbol in many religions. (you beat me to it, master!)
- Wavey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can thank Richard Reid for that one.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just hate taking off my god damned shoes at the airport. Also I'm not walking through one of those scanners that sees through clothes.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Heh. Try this on an international flight!
