- SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20hint: setup same config before leaving your house and going out at night. if you end up having "company" at the end of the night then at least this will help you remember what she looked like, amongst other things :)

"Get the ***** off my lawn!" - burgerboy06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Works, and awesome. Now i can see what my roomate does to my ***** when i am not here.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i used to do this, but with different software.. it had options about amount of change and time length of motion.
I used to to look out the window for the ups truck and email me at work when ups arrived, so i could run home and secure my package. Took a while to tweak it so i wouldnt get 100s pictures/hr of my neighbours cats, squirels and everything else that passed in front of the camera - catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Stop trying really hard to be pedandtic
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7and for hundreds cheaper then a video surveillance system.
- jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7They got anything like this for Linux?
- HELLRaZerX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5nice!!! i can finally catch that thief, stealing my netflix dvds from my mailbox =)
- duewydo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have 3 cameras setup throughout my house, two are USB and one is a WIFI cam. I installed my motion detection camera system after a trip I made with the family. I showed my grandmother how I could remotely turn on my pc and log into the web cam, to find my brother in-law had broken into our home and was doing the nasty live on my couch with his girl friend. Further viewing found him having an under age drinking party amongst other things. I wasn’t very happy, especially when finding our brand new bed sheets had stains in them… its awesome being able to view the camera feed live from any web browser.
- Ryan229, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Any ideas on how to pull an image from a Bluetooth-enabled camera phone at set intervals? Let's hypothesize that phone is a Sony Ericsson s710a.
- TheOtherGuy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Condescending commenters... is there anything worse?
- RobbieF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A Short Anticdote
My wife and I kept coming home to find at least one empty bag of bread on the floor in the kitchen. We have 3 dogs, 2 cats (and a bird, and a snake, and 3 ferrets... but that's not important). We don't leave bread out on the counter, for that very reason... Yet, every evening, we'd discover that a critter had figured out how to get the bread. This went on for about a week.
One morning, I stretched a Creative Webcam Pro into the kitchen and set up motion detection.
That evening, after passing by the new mess in the kitchen, we huddled around the PC to see what happened:
7:20am The Teenager makes toast, leaves bread on counter
7:30am The Teenager leaves for school (late, as usual)
8:15am The large cat (Katie) bats the bread off of the counter, on to the floor.
8:16am The large cat, the large dog (Bubba) and a smaller dog (Hannah) have a party with my loaf of bread.
2:57pm The Teenager comes home, steps OVER the mess in the kitchen, gets a snack and leaves.
*sigh* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5east vancouver is fu**ked up
with all the ho's and crack addicts - carsey16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4hahah that's EXACTLY what I'm thinking. Like I don't know it's him that's "borrowing" my stuff
- boolean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I also did that with my logitech quickcam, now looking for free mac alternatives.
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5not mine
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whoops it was a typo...honestly :'(
- OwenX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Is there a software equivilent for Mac OS X and iSight?

i am annoyed by those on digg (and in life) who are critical of the smallest of things, but i couldn't help wondering if you spelled pedantic incorrectly on purpose to see if he would reply. doh, now i've done it! ;) - ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Active Webcam (google it)
The name sounds generic, but I have found it to be far more reliable and it has more features then the above programs.
The trial-version doesn't expire and is full featured.
I have it monitor two web-cams at once.
I view the lastest images on my google home page. - M19R86P, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think spacey read my mind before posting this article. Nice find!
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I actually did that with my SE k700 one time.
But lets just say that i think alternatives would work better :P - rende, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmm.. need a linux package that does the same, or we need to port this one.

me too. - starmanjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2there are quite a few. oculus is good.

i was actually looking for comparable software for a PC. you do a search for Mac software and any one of them will do the job and are full featured. i must have downloaded a dozen for the PC and they were all so lame i was just now getting extremely irritated. i don't know why windows software has to be so damn ass backwards.
so anyway the answer to your question as always is ya. and as always it works... all of it more functional and better quality than anything for windows. - collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try zonemminder. It can take a bit of farting about with the PHP to get it installed, but it is pretty cool once it is running. There is another program motion that does something similar, but I didn't try that.
www.zoneminder.com - wickednz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Gotcha and Homewatcher would be probably be worthwhile checking out too

http://www.homewatcher.com/products.htm - kalmi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you would read the article you would know that this software can record from multiple cameras.
- TheOtherGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It is a nifty system... i have used Dorgem and my webcam to catch people casing our apartment block.
- BrianAllred, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Yes, there are a lot of cool apps for the iSight. Here is one off VerisonTracker:

Motion is great.

Spelt it wrong above... - noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4The iSight is an excellent cam for surveillance. I personally prefer EvoCam. It has a ton of different features.
And why was this guy buried for asking a question? - rende, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kickass.. thanks, looks even better than the OP app :)
- collywolly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1www.zonemider.com
(I haven't played with Dorgem, but Zonemider looks as if it is a fair bit more powerful. You can administer everything on it over the web, get it to mail you when something happens, I think I saw someone on the forums had managed to hook it up to asterisk....). - jhernandez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had a similar situation with "someone" breaking branches of tree in the front lawn... I used Easy freewebcam, which emails me when it detects motion and records for a preset amount of time. BTW, they offer a free personal page where you can either see the live video stream or timed pics from your webcam.
http://www.easyfreewebcam.com/ - SlabbaJabba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Yahoo Messenger to view outside my house while I'm at work. Motion detection/recording wouldn't do me any good with all the cars going by. It is very easy to setup (Create 2 yahoo accounts) and you get live video. Just another option.
- zaxis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here is a tutorial on how to make this with flash http://heywink.com/wordpress/?p=20&page=2
- 1101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Does anybody know of something that will record video from multiple webcams?
I am currently trying to use Webcam Surveyor, but the main problem i have with it is that is it stores video to ram, then creates a file on the hard disk upon stopping capture (this is no good). Also it wants to preview all the cameras while recoding, that uses a lot of CPU up.
I don't know if I really need motion capture too much, I would prefer to have it automatically record from boot up (space is not an issue, i can run motion monitoring upon video review). Cheers to anybody who can help me out. - Etheo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been waiting to do this forever, though it was about 2 years ago when I had a mouse problem that I REALLY needed it... but now I got a question: does this work with day/night lighting change? like will it constantly capture night pictures if I set the default at a daytime view or vice versa?
- jsaya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been wanting to do this forever and suprisingly that was really easy - took less than 2 mins to set everything up! - Finally a use for that $100 webcam that Logitech sent me! :D
- petesteel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I can think of a bunch of places this would work really well with a wireless webcam. hmm. good stuff.
- bongchitis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0USB supports 128, so that means 128 cameras, or 128 minus number of usb hubs and switches. Isn't USB like scsi in that respect?
- Farmer77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I bought a logitech webcam three years ago and it already came with the software to do just that. You can adjust how sensitive you want it to go off and start recording.
- matt0baba, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3STFU Vancouver is the nicest city i lived in EVER! and Any big city has its darker neighborhood. besides its not too bad...im not too scared walking there at night.... on the other hand i was truly scared walking in Seattle at night
- Whitey04, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3There has been a windows powertoy around for years (for free) that could motion detect and record from a webcam. Old-news.
- Petrarch1603, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1seems like a waste of a phone
- avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3What an articulately constructed argument. I want you representing me if (most likely when) I end up in court....
- wickednz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0^ well that was good english...
- aapala, on 10/12/2007, -15/+10Yeaaaah... ummmm. Macs do not suck. Macs are good.
