You should be, you made millions off of stupid people while the rest of us have to toil for much, much less.
Lucky *****. - DaviDTC, on 11/02/2009, -0/+40I must be lame. Even the spammers don't send me any messages.
- c0mputar, on 11/02/2009, -8/+48***** you.
- Schwab, on 11/02/2009, -1/+31Step 1: Read Article
Step 2: Immediately Log on and check Facebook
Step 3: ????
Step 4: He Profits! ! - dvsbastard, on 11/02/2009, -1/+26I don't know whether to hate him for being a spammer... or to admire him for being such a clever son of a bitch...
- deadguysleeps, on 11/02/2009, -0/+25dugg for Cloaking:
Cloaking: This is when you show a different page based on IP address. We and most other ad networks would geo-block northern California—showing different ads to Facebook employees than to other users around the world. One of the largest Facebook advertisers (I’m not going to out you, but you know who you are) employs this technique to this day, using a white-listed account. Our supposition is that it makes too much money for Facebook to stop him. Believe me, we have brought this to Facebook on several occasions. Here’s what this fellow does—he submits tame ads for approval, and once approved, redirects the url to the spammy page. To be fair, players like Google AdWords, have had years more experience in this game to close such loopholes. - Tordenflesk, on 11/02/2009, -2/+20I'm sorry, i couldn't hear you behind my adblock-script running on my router.
- bubba9999, on 11/02/2009, -1/+17the word is parasite.
- DesignerDave, on 11/02/2009, -3/+16It takes a special kind of person to live with themselves at the expense of so many others.
- garyjlv, on 11/02/2009, -0/+13Easy, NEVER click internet ads. This'll get the attention of social sites (like digg).
- Sunsneezer, on 11/02/2009, -2/+14That's the single most interesting and useful article I've read in a long time! You know how sometimes people won't even believe a scam when they are a victim of one, and you have to explain them how it works. Well after reading this, you can get anyone with a reasonable attention span to ***** INSTALL ADBLOCK!
Also, dugg for this article going to piss ad networks it's just next to.
The very fact it's on front page suggets that advertisers are not controlling the content on Digg! - Vindexus, on 11/02/2009, -0/+10Will you add me? I need more neighbors.
- philomatic, on 11/02/2009, -0/+9If it wasn't for shadey tricks like this, would anyone click on ads on facebook?
- Prayer4theDying, on 11/02/2009, -0/+8Selling someone's email address to spammers does not seem harmless to me...
- mine4321, on 11/02/2009, -0/+7Find out his home address... we have some snail spam to sign him up for.
- davidjunit, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6Just proves you're not a dumbass. The only accounts I get spam in are the ones that I intentionally used because I knew I was giving the information to some shady site. As long as you don't go sticking your e-mail in every pop-up window that says someone has a crush on you then you should be clean. ;)
- kthoma22, on 11/02/2009, -1/+7I swear to god if I see one more person on my feed with a mafia wars, socialinterview.com, or farmville thing I'm gonna be pissed.
- soupyc, on 11/02/2009, -0/+6Man, AdBlock Plus for the win. I didn't even know Facebook HAD ads.
- DTJunkie07, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5how do you get into spamming exactly? Its not like you just push a button or make a call...
- drouk1556, on 11/02/2009, -0/+5Spamming Facebook isn't really illegal.
- PatrickX, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4You're right, running websites out of business by removing their sole source of income will in fact get their attention...
- Twinnie, on 11/02/2009, -1/+5Oh yeah, what an expense. If I could make money by ever so slightly inconveniencing lots of people I'd do it in a heartbeat.
In fact, I wouldn't care if it was a big inconvenience and I wasn't getting paid. - timschuit, on 11/02/2009, -4/+8Nothing he's doing is illegal.
Enjoy your inability to create proper analogies. - proverbs17, on 11/02/2009, -0/+4People must be digging you down because they don't like spammers.
C'mon folks, haven't you thought the same thing? The only reason that you haven't gotten into spamming is either your morels are too high, or your too lazy to get off your butt to get into it. - Cyberdactyl, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3I wouldn't say scamming a system is luck.
It's more like;
3 parts tech insight
2 parts social irresponsibility
1 part pure *****
will almost always make you money for a while. - bman1984, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Apparently the article was too much for you to comprehend.
1. Make some ***** application that appeals to teenagers, who now all have cell phones that their parents pay for.
2. Build ads into the game which look like Facebook related alerts. You have seen them. They look something like, "Find out who is stalking you", "Find out who your crush is", etc.
3. When the user goes through "registering" for said "application" that tells you whatever you decided to lie about, request cell # for verification.
4. Send pin to cell number.
5. Dumbass teenager goes to third party website, not Facebook, and enters PIN. Dumbass teenager does not read small print that they are signing up for a $2/day joke service.
6. PROFIT!!!! - MeccaYdna, on 11/03/2009, -0/+2wait, you mean I'm not going to receive my free macbook air for testing?
Or my free Xbox 360?
Or my new canon camera?
NOOOO!! - riverstyx, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Didn't make a dime off me, I never use those sites because of guys like him.
- Markpdotcom, on 11/02/2009, -3/+5Ad block in Firefox and HOSTS block list (www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm), I don't see a single ad while browsing :)
- Squirgle, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2You know you can block individual apps, right? I personally play mafia wars to pass the time, but i still don't see the spam in my feed.
Or you can use FBpurity to block all the apps, but it blocks any updates from an iPhone unfortunately, so I can't recommend it. - squelched, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2sorry its hard for me to pay attention to anything written by a spammer. mental blockage
- phogasmic, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2I appreciate him putting this stuff out. He is very right about the potential of Facebook's ads. I have a feeling that in a few years Facebook is going to be practically printing money like Google is.
- inactive, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1Does anyone actually do all this? It is simply unbelievable to know that people spend so much time to spam! God bless them.
- wyrdness, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2And in other news, a notorious Facebook spammer has just been fined £711 million in damages.
- godsdead, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1Back when facebook introduced apps, i checked out the API and this is the first thing that came into my mind, thats why i didn't accept all those ***** app requests....
- Locastus, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2"Capitalism is all about doing what you can to make money."
Does that clarify things for you, douchebag? - ScissorHand26, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1Stan57, that isn't an actual rebuttal of my statement. You didn't even manage to use the proper diction in your response. What the hell are you doing on digg?
Is there anyone who can back Prayer4theDying up in regards to stealing email addresses being harmful? I mean, I think it's a dick move, and I hate spammers too, but what's the big deal? You have a spam folder, put it in there, and you're done. - Moogle, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1As much as I am against selling people's e-mail addresses and spamming, you are really bad at arguing any sort of point, and I think it's best if you just stopped.
- sousademiami, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1To be fair, Bernie had a few more "pure *****" parts.
- Zubeneschemali, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1Get tab permissions, you can block images, too. If it's just a news site I prefer to read it with a link to images if I want them. I have Adblock Plus but never really set it up as NoScript and Flashblock seem to take care of most of the junk. Some stuff is in the hosts file, also.
- fatherdoom, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1But sometimes you end up like Bernie Madoff.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1She needs to change all her passwords, especially on the email account used to log into the site.
- emberjohn, on 11/02/2009, -2/+2Why am i not included in the Spammers Hot List ??
- justforaminute, on 11/02/2009, -0/+0
> Oh yeah, what an expense. If I could make money by ever so slightly inconveniencing lots of people I'd do it in a heartbeat.
He was doing something a but more nefarious than that to generate his earnings - he wrote the following comment at http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/10/31/scamville-the ...
"I am one of the few folks who have actually generated millions in revenue from these Facebook applications, so I sadly have to say that Arrington is right. The way most of these mobile offers work is to trick kids (yes, folks who are under 18) into confirming a PIN number on their phone. The result is their parent’s phone bill is charged $10-$50 a month so that the child can earn points in a game. It’s that simple." - Stan57, on 11/02/2009, -0/+0It wasn't meant to be a rebuttal, it was meant to call you an idiot. If you weren't an idiot, you would know its against the law "Can spam Act" to steal email addresses for spamming. 2. Your moronic self thinks its just ok to deceive people, and cant figure why that bothers people. Its morons like YOU that destroy our great country. Who brought you up Hitler?? Your mother and father did a lousy job thats for sure.
- ScissorHand26, on 11/02/2009, -4/+3All you have to do is get another email address. I went through quite a few when I was younger because I was stupid enough to give them out. Then you just forward to all of your friends that you have the new address.
I will take back my comment if someone can actually demonstrate some amount of harm this guy did that is meaningful. Just being a nuisance doesn't make him deserve your revulsion. - ScissorHand26, on 11/02/2009, -7/+6What is with everyone bitching on here? All this guy did was make annoying adds. He deceived people, but he didn't hurt anyone. It's not a big deal at all, yet digg seems to have its collective panties in a bunch over this.
- Stan57, on 11/02/2009, -2/+0That man belongs in jail, its just that simple!
- robinthehood, on 11/02/2009, -8/+6I have a friend who is spamming out the following from her facebook (not her sending these)
"Jane Doe has made $156 today working at home! go to SelfWorkHome.com to see how you can start! dmg"
Anyone know how to get rid of these? Obviously something is hacked on her account. It says it's sent from Mobile Web so I'm guessing this is showing up on her cell bill somewhere. At some point she gave out her cell number to some site... - Stan57, on 11/02/2009, -2/+0Your an idiot, its just that simple!
