- piedood, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes. Try tightvnc loopback on Windows and it will show both the real desktop and the vnc window - kind of like looking at a mirror with a mirror you get infinite windows.
- Danathar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For a faster remote desktop connection you can use the same information except use Microsoft's Remote desktop utililty.
Install SSH as you would before and substitute port 3389 with 5900
VNC is good, but Remote desktop supports bitmap caching which makes the responsiveness MUCH Better. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There is no need for an SSH tunnel if you use UltraVNC"
At my work, the vnc port is blocked, so I have to SSH to my home setup and then vnc through my tunnel to bypass...but this story isnt digg worthy, it's a simple google search. Hell, I can start submitting this type of stuff - mfearby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wrote some instructions along these lines back in January for my own purposes (coz I kept forgetting). Maybe somebody else will find them useful: http://marc.fearby.com/index.php?p=16

There is no need for an SSH tunnel if you use UltraVNC. - brianfischer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not just use UltraVNC and the DSM encryption plugin?
- nixpanic, on 04/23/2009, -0/+0Dead link :(
- bonyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can someone explain or point me to a site that explains why just using a program like winvnc and configuring your router to open the proper ports isn't good enough? I don't know much about vnc so any help is appreciated.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Use UltraVNC with DSM encryption plugin and you'll be fine.
- saxman57, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used to subscribe to the VNC user mailing list and it is incredible how many people use VNC across the Internet without encryption. There were users from health care companies, various businesses, etc, all asking how to connect to work from home and no one cared about securing their connection. Even if this is a repost, it is still important information.
- spamalope, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow, how is this anything that doesn't come back with 100000 hits on google for "tunnel vnc"
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Damn. Harsh crowd. I didn't know how to do it, that's why I submitted it.

are you a diggfan? http://www.diggfan.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0veamon, you can change the port number in UltraVNC.
- davidarussell, on 04/22/2009, -0/+0Someone must be digging it...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Damn. Harsh crowd. I didn't know how to do it, that's why I submitted it."
Heh, don't take offense, it happens on every digg.
"veamon, you can change the port number in UltraVNC."
Yea, but I have to tunnel a lot (shoutcast, remote desktop, webmail), so i dont want to have to keep changing the ports when I want to use somethin different. - swizzcheez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To go a step further than VNC via ssh: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/VPN-HOWTO/
- Andreasvb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried the DSM plugin yesterday, too bad it don't work with the Java client.
I read the forums and they might make it work. - wazoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0vpn anyone?
- sunimit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I posted this similar article on Digg a couple of days ago.
http://digg.com/apple/HOWTO_Use_Your_Mac_From_Anywhere
Article has VDO tutorial on how to setup SSH to tunnel VNC over the Internet.
Direct link to the article:
http://howto.diveintomark.org/remote-mac/ - sbostedor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why tunnel RDP through SSH?? It's already encrypted.
- SinNombre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0UltraVNC with DSM encryption. Fast as VNC but w/ encryption and easy to setup with more intuitive features. And free.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0UltraVNC is mainly just for widnows, things like RealVNC are (more widely atleast) avalible for other platforms
Anyway, usefull enough
- Ben - secretsquirrel4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1too bad this story was copied and a digg story back in july...
- peace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Freenx is another very good client alternative if you are on slow networks.
SSH server for windows machines:
http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/ - rothbart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Remote Desktop tunneled through an ssh connection all the time. I have a Linux file server at home (on a small network) and just tunnel the appropriate port to my home network. As a nice side note, if anyone in my office happens to click on Remote Desktop to see the last IP connected to, they'll only see 127.0.0.1:3390 (which gets forwarded to port 3389 at home). And SSH compression speeds up Remote Desktop noticeably. The later versions of PuTTY let you turn compression on/off on the fly and you can really tell.
- ralphsnart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0from the article, "You need to do this step only if your VNC server and the sshd server are running on the same box. (note: it is much better if you use a separate box for the ssh server, VNC loopback is dangerous)"
i've read in numerous posts/HOWTO's that creating a VNC loopback is dangerous - anyone know why? - CoAX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another advantage of the SSH tunnel is that you can hide your VNC-ing or for that matter, any other communication (email, webbrowsing, ftp, etc) from your corporate network.
Just configure your home NAT/router so that port 443 is forwarded to your SSHserver on port 22 and you have an (almost) unblockable / always-reachable way of evading the corporate nazis all the time. - antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh, also tunnel RDP via SSH.. one (of 1000s of how-tos)
http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/RemoteDesktop/SSH-RDP-VNC/RemoteDesktopVNCandSSH.html#Install_and_configure - Griffen37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think this tutorial, though largely repetitive, is slightly easier to follow: http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/RemoteDesktop/SSH-RDP-VNC/RemoteDesktopVNCandSSH.html
- antiTRACE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0QUOTE: People who claim RDP is so much faster than VNC have never used UltraVNC with the mirror driver. It works very well and elimates any speed differences between the two. Also RDP has one major flaw that cannot ever be fixed. It only gives you a terminal session, not real direct access to your desktop. Without that RDP is worthless IMHO. For servers fine, for home users belch. Stick with VNC, it offers much more.UNQUOTE:
whatever dude, I use both for work, EVERY DAY. RDP blows Ultra VNC away. But nonetheless, you can shadow 0 for the local desktop if you want/need that. Also, you can get the RDP dll from windows 2003 and have multiple RDP connections on a single xp (pro) desktop.
VNC rocks, yes, but it isn't better than RDP in speed and ease of use, and especially ease of use and encryption all tied into one. - sbostedor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hamachi looks cool but it's not a good product for the business environment. Not yet, anyways.

http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/features/driver.html - Maczimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Hamachi which goes through firewalls and allows me to play games, use VNC and share files just like i am on the LAN at home. all with 256 bit encryption.
- Duston, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I love VNC but is you are looking or a free (as in beer) way to remotely control a Windows box with encryption check out http://www.logmein.com
It's much simpler. - Polaris75, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Seriously, who doesn't already know how to do this??
- wetelectric, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0saved 5mins of ur life. There's also an MIT webpage on it aswell. This one licks balls, salty ones.
