- sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+75I didn't know The Fonz worked in car design.
- jdc760, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66Way to steal the first comment from the article.
- maddox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+65Peugeot 406's have a similar fault where if you hit the boot (sorry, *trunk* for you yanks) in the right place it will open.
Also, the ignition on old Vauxhall Nova's will turn on without a key if you take the hazard light switch out and put it back in upside down! To be honest though, there is no valid excuse for owning a Nova so it's not a big issue. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+47Ok, I will.
Mazda. - Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Its geez....
gosh. - sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28This is a common problem some some locks, I have an interesting anecdotal story to coincide with this problem.
Buddy of mine had a problem getting in to his business one night, we were emptying trash and the door locked behind us. He told me that a swift kick in the right spot would open the door. After watching him mess with it for 20 minutes, I walked up to the door and gave it the ol' college try, kicked the door on the bottom swifly while pulling on the door handle, and opened it up. It was a fairly new building, I was amazed that it even worked on the door, let alone the only back door in the building.
I had no idea this would work on a car, though. That's a pretty ***** design, why bother to engineer locks on the car if the first place if it can be beaten so easily? - rcran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26At least the doors are unlocked after you crash.
- jrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22so.. whats the spot?
- twitmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21"Every car has a defect that makes it easy to break into, it's called a window."
(This insightful comment was taken from the original article) - AICkieran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Yes, they OWN them (in mazdas case its 33%), just because Ford are primary share holders doesn't mean they make them.
If anything allot of Fords are based on Mazdas. FMC also own Land Rover and Volvo - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"I've been wanting a Mazda 3 for some time, now I know how to get one, thanks AutoBlog!!!!!!!"
- Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I think the better question here is how does a car NOT get past a government (USA) crash test rating? Ever ridden in a Hyundai? No?
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15xarc13 - Yes, part of the internet does run through France. I'm sure of it.
- DEADB33F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Having a defect which enables crooks to break in easily won't make the car perform any worse in crash tests, just FYI.
- filefly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11@xarc13
It makes me chuckle that you use the word "douchebag," since "douche" is, uh, French... - rumbleroast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@Tourney3p0
Although Mazda is partially owned by Ford, the Mazda 3 is manufactured in Japan. - Tourney3p0, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Import? Mazda is made by Ford. You're driving a Ford and are talking about "***** American 4-bangers". Back away from the keyboard for a moment and appreciate what's going on.
- redmondmj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Good thing you threw in that Google comparison. How else would us geeks ever understand?
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Peugeot sold cars in the US until mid 1992. Unfortunately, the models sold in the US pretty much sucked, mainly because they were retrofitted from the European models to meet US emissions and safety standards, instead of being designed to meet those standards from the start.

- layzie83, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So if they are assembled in Claycomo, Missouri then why were they shipping them to the US and Canada?
http://www.autoblog.com/2006/07/27/cargo-ship-cougar-ace-tips-over-4-700-mazdas-aboard/
Plus I checked mine and it states Manufactured by Mazda Motor Company, below that Made in Japan. You may be correct about the other vehicles but a 2006 Mazda 3 is made in Japan. As for the story itself I'm going to be contacting Mazda tomorrow about this faulty lock. - Rikkochet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Aw crap. I knew my new baby was too good to be true :(
Any other 3 owners want to join me in writing Mazda? - Zergo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Microsoft owns what? is it around 30% of Apple?
Ford owns 33% of Mazda....
The way I see it, Apple is not Microsoft, Mazda is not Ford. - 93ex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@theredbicycle
http://www.mazda.com/mazdaspirit/zoom-zoom/ - techmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, the Mazda3 is assembled in Japan. It's even got a VIN starting in J, which is a clear indicator. ;) The chassis itself is Volvo, from the Volvo S40. The engine and transmission, however, are 100% Ford, out of the European Focus.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@drpunkerz:
If the article is talking about a Mazda 3 and he's saying "what's one more [dent]," then why would he be talking about a BMW? - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WTF?
- digitaloxygen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So are they saying that the alarms aren't going off either. If the alarm is set it will go off when you open the door regardless of how you do so (i would think).
- Barryke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Its not a bug, its a feature!"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Undocumented_feature - skouturf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This happened to me LAST WEEK!!!
What a huge pain and a huge dint.
Wish i knew this 5 months ago.......... - rrubiojr1975, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The 3 considered an import - their VIN's begin with a J, meaning that the vehicle is actually assembled in Japan. Also, the 3 built off the same chassis as the Volvo S40. It's a joint venture with Ford, Mazda and Volvo.
I have an '04 and have been really satisfied with the vehicle. And yes, I will be checking into this "defect". Don't need another reason to have my insurance premium to go up. - blachole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, I will. I just bought an 07.
- palegreenstarz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Seeing as I already have 2 dents in the side of my new M3 thanks to idiots in parking lots...whats one more?
Seriously though, this sucks and hopefully they'll fix it. - Phaze13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They roll off the boat 100% assembled. My wife's Mazda6 was made in the US. My Mazda3 was made in Japan. BTW they build quality of my 3 is better than the 6.
- redmondmj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Damn, I have an 04 and all this time I thought I was just misplacing everything. I haven't noticed any big dents though. Maybe they get in by making all those little dents all over the rest of the car. Or, maybe I just lose stuff (more fun to blame Mazda though).
- Fairbanks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Many companies have interest in other companies, but that doesn't necessarily indicate whether they run operations or not. Also, buying a company outright for cash or stock and owning interesting in a company are two very different things. Ford bailed Mazda out from some hard times, but has since let the company design it's own cars for the most part. Many Mazda designs and platforms even become released under Ford badges.
From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda :
It had been widely rumored for a few years that Ford would use the Mazda 6/Atenza's platform in upcoming new cars. This was very different from the climate in 1996, when commentators expected Ford to impose its own engineering on Mazda and lead to the loss of Mazda's proprietary expertise. In the Autumn, three models based on the 6's CD3 architecture were released — the Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, and Lincoln Zephyr. - quack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now I'm really glad I bought a 3 a few months ago. I hope Mazda will recall it and get it fixed for free!
- aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's ok, it's still the cleanest and highest quality compact...bar none except for perhaps the jetta, which is a solid 3K more
- canon66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've got an '05, I'm definitely going to contact someone at Mazda and someone at my dealership.
- bani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2no you dont. many current mazdas are imports.
- Toekiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ahh but if we knew where to put the dent, we could add the dent ourselves thus advertising to said thief that he was beaten to it, so he'd just walk away. It's actually an anti theft device.
