- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Good for admins that add sites to corporate blacklists.
- JonLatane, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I assume this has something to do with Firefox 3's inclusion of malware prevention:
http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/06/firefox-3-will-include-malware.html
This is good. Now it's not just an exclusive feature for Firefox 3; Safari, Opera, Konqueror, even MSIE can interface with it if they feel it's a feature they'd like. - AskReaMaor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Thats great, Finally we could use it's API into OpenSource anti Spyware softwares..
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6yea, if you digg deep enough, youll find live.com and yahoo.com blacklisted
- angusm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It would be nice to see an API to McAfee's SiteAdvisor as well. I think there's mileage in displaying a warning that says "This site is owned by a scammer", or "Enter your email address anywhere on this site and you're going to get your ass spammed off."
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4If you want a public blacklist, go make it yourself. Why complain about something google is giving away?
I suppose being cautious of power is necessary, but being immediately critical of a well-intentioned service isn't very nice. - DigDugDigger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Well, maybe JoinRudy2008.com should be blacklisted.
- smurf22, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5All hail the google!
- standsolid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Will be cool if OpenDNS uses this.
- 4ndr3w, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7This is a great thing. But, if the public can use it, don't you think that the public should be able to control it in a way? If this gets used widely in apps, Google *will* have the power to make a site disappear.
- gmoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree Angusm, The security community should be working together to share up to date information. With the sad state that the internet has become in the last few years public safety is more important than making a buck if you ask me.
- ggbs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1anyone knows how to obtain the full list of blocked sites w/o going thru the api? For research purposes.
- atozand1to10, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That is so true.
- TimDigg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I completely agree....I was just giving an example, he's the slimiest politician out of them all
- 4ndr3w, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I really wasn't complaing about it, I think it's really smart for Google to do this. I'm just pointing something out.
:) - joel2600, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1if you're accidentally logged in to google, they're already capturing most people's search history on their servers without most people knowing they are or ever deleting it.
now by using this people will be sending the address of every site they visit directly to google for 'malware' and 'phishing' checking against a blacklist.
i don't know about most of you, but i'll be sticking with good ol' common sense, rather than pass all of my internet traffic to a 3rd party.
one thing's for sure though, between google and choicepoint, those companies know most everyone better than they do. - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2It is clear that you have no idea how this software works. Please educate yourself before posting.
- angusm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Good point 4ndr3w ... but Google already pretty much has the power to make a site 'disappear'.
Come to that, now that we rely on Google Maps for everything, Google has the power to make _places_ disappear. - TimDigg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1that was my exact thoughts when I saw the title
I can easily see this blacklist API being used a political tool
for example I can easily see www.JoinRudy2008.com being blacklisted
It will be interesting to see where this can of worms leads us - Fairly, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1Totally lame. If Eric Sergey Larry weren't sitting in Gates' lap with his dick up their you know whos this wouldn't be necessary.
And it's not about what dumb computers are "out there" - it's about what dumb computers are "right here". As on your own ***** desktop. As in M$ WINDOZE.
So get a grip.
