- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -5/+56I'm French, so I've followed the whole story from day one, let it be said that he's NOTHING like a genius hacker.
- dtraneighty8, on 10/07/2008, -3/+42Genius hackers aren't caught.
- jmpeagle, on 04/27/2008, -2/+26they knew what he was doing....he was making them billions in 2007 but around december his positions started going negative...then the company started to "care" and say he was violating policy. They would only have told the authorites when his rule breaking cost money instead of made them money.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -2/+24Genius Hacker? This guy was a patsy. No way the bank didn't know they had that much at risk. He was the fall guy for the banks own losses on mortgages.
- Daedalus17, on 04/27/2008, -2/+22Right.. and genius physicists never make math mistakes.
- AcidBurnz, on 04/27/2008, -2/+20*shakes head up and down*
- DavidGuetta9, on 04/27/2008, -1/+18I don't know why you were dugg down, I'm French too and if you have read the newspapers you would see that he was a simple pawn or loser.
- DavidGuetta9, on 04/27/2008, -0/+15he's not a effing genius hacker, he's just some poor loser, and I can say that because I'm French
- vade79, on 04/27/2008, -2/+17There was only 4 when you said that... Don't you need more to sample from before the token "these comments suck" sucky comment?
- seoul_scurry, on 04/27/2008, -0/+13Buried for being an inaccurate piece of sh*t. This guy is not a genius... who considers losing nearly 8 billion as genius?
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -1/+13it would never have made it to the front page if i didn't include the words "genius hacker" to make it into a sensationalist headline. you can turn almost anything into a sensationalist headline if you choose the right words.
- KibibyteBrain, on 04/27/2008, -0/+11No, it means that he can actually compromise systems, and not only spew out a bunch of security blog post buzzwords and act like he can.
- jmpeagle, on 04/27/2008, -0/+10yeah and he was making them tons of money when he was doing it initially hence they didn't do anything about it. His bosses knew which is why some of them were fired.
- TonyLocNE, on 04/27/2008, -3/+13Dugg for --> "...he had intimate knowledge of the "back office..."
I've heard that the French know a lot about that particular building cavity.. - Awspire, on 04/27/2008, -0/+9Euphemistically speaking, its the Greeks that are known for that particular cavity, not the French.
- Patori, on 04/27/2008, -0/+8Yes.
"Genius Animals - Hero Dog Recovers Lost Object" - Satanael, on 04/27/2008, -1/+9Is this becoming the popular thing to say when you're desperate for diggs?
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -1/+8he had a real job before he was caught
- Satanael, on 04/27/2008, -0/+6I remember that scene from 300, too.
- simianstyle, on 04/27/2008, -22/+27these comments suck
- Gregfr, on 04/27/2008, -1/+6Sounds more like a genuine crook than a genius hacker...
- noahhoward, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4So he didn't brute force a cross-site buffer overflow?
- fnordy, on 04/27/2008, -0/+4From what a few reports said, he simply exploited known holes, and lax security in things like spreadsheets. He's more akin to a 'script kiddie' than a "uber-hacker".
- siwu, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3I second that. I'm French too, and a friend of mine is working a Societe Generale's IT at La Defense. Basically, the guy worked on the back office, where he got hold of a bunch of passwords (because people told him), then when he became a trader, he basically used these passwords to validate his own transactions.
Hacker? Please....
Still, I would have a unerasable smile on my face, if I lost 4.9 billion euros :) - poopdigger, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3the guy who hired him must be either extremely confident in Mr. Kerviel's motives, or extremely stupid.
- LonesomeFighter, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3maybe less. free food and they do your laundry
- barsanuphe, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3he's not a genius hacker, he's a douchebag that lost 5 ***** Billion dollars to try to prove his bosses he had big balls. how can someone who lost such an inconceivable amount of money, lost because he made horrible choices, be called a genious?
- thekms, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Well, it WAS funny...
- rowlodge, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2can talk his way out of anything too.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -3/+5just by looking at the way he dresses, you can tell he's a douchebag (he is noticeably wearing a pink shirt).
- kerracked, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2The way I understood the article, guy's lawyer got his friend to get this guy a job, so he wouldn't have to sit in jail waiting for trial. As an "IT Consultant." Doesn't mean he won't be convicted.
- skamp, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2A loser who probably makes a lot more money than you (and I'm french too).
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2"In February, the former trader was ordered into custody on the grounds he might tamper with evidence."
He hasn't been tried yet. He's out on bail - CaptEnder, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2A little more than 1/12.
- Akaji, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2Or something something something SQL injection?
- LonesomeFighter, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2are you scared to swear?
- agentlame, on 04/27/2008, -0/+2When I read this title, I assumed it was an Onion story.
"Genius Hacker Released from Prison; Lands Job with IT Firm" Really?
"Breaking: It's cold as balls in Antarctica" - known, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catch_me_if_you_can
- Pyromite78, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1so.. since he had access to systems and knew how trading worked that makes him a genius hacker... I don't understand.. how does having access to back office software make you an IT whiz that nets you a job with a networking and security firm? I don't see the relationship here.. maybe I don't know enough about the guy and there's stuff the story is leaving out but from what I can tell from this article.. he's no one special.. just some guy who worked at a computerized trading firm who had security privileges that gave him access to do, I would assume, admin level things and manipulate trades.. This does not make him a "hacker" or "IT Whiz kid".. He is no Adrian Lamos and doesn't deserve the 15 minutes he's getting.
- anamanaman, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2Haha, I love the last line of the article. The trader's lawyers are *contesting* his dismissal after losing 8 billion dollars through fraud. Only in Europe...
- roosterjack, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1I don't believe he is a hacker. Just look at the way he dresses. That's no hacker nor genius clothes. too fancy.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1he didn't steal any money from the bank
- haiduz, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1I dont think he was as much of a hacker, but he understood how to circumvent the system's internal control's because of "intimate knowledge of the back office". This is just an example of the failure of segregation of duties. It can be agrued that someone with such knowledge should either not work in his position or have extra oversight because of his background.
- clharlem149, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1ohhh nooo, last time i saw that comment, every single comment on the story except for one that said "digg me down if i'm not gay" was dugg down in large numbers...
- borninda818, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1touche
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1GTA is the best educational game out there then.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1often risky trades are only unauthorized when you are in the red, as long as you are turning a profit, or they think you are turning a profit they dont care. That is how the rogue trader in asia what like 20 years ago was able to pull it off. They thought he was profitable so they kept giving him more and more money until they had no more left.
- inactive, on 04/27/2008, -1/+2shut the ***** up
- czeman, on 04/27/2008, -0/+1Corporate executives do when those losses are "coincidentally" equal to their salaries, bonuses, and benefits, or they walk away with severance packages of $100+ million after they get bought out of their contracts due to poor performance.
