What an absolutely stupid thing to say. I think Bill has been hanging around Balmer way to long. The whole diatribe he went on was pretty demeaning. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11"I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine."
Famous last words. - kuza55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I wonder if the phrase "I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine." was followed (at least in Bill Gates' mind) by "Because we have more lawyers that could shut you down than you can deal with." or similar.
All I can say is; hurray for FUD. Its coming from everywhere. - k0rd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Did they not hear about the Speech Recognition exploit already out?
- doubleblack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What's the problem what that "exploit" because it's BY DESIGN!
When you are using speech recognition and say delete, the OS shouldn't question you. If you are retarded, don't use speech recognition and you won't have a problem... - xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They (Microsoft) know:

I hope people prove him wrong just for the fun of it. They could call it an exercise in forced humility. - crazyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It look as if Gates feels threatened for the first time, which is a good thing for us, because it breeds better products.
- Neoda, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7That is just asking for trouble. Also, we can just have a quick look at the number of virus's which have successfully taken over windows in the past. I've had to manually clean up my computer even with Windows firewall and Symantic running. So how about a nice big cup of STFU Mr Gates? Trust me, Vista is far from invincible, at one point the whole codebase was descibed as a "house of cards."
Public humilitation is in order. Now. - Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I believe that Bill was most likely referring to this:
http://digg.com/security/Security_researcher_to_reveal_one_Mac_OS_X_security_hole_per_day
... when he said this:
"Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit".
I do not know if they're "total exploits" or not, but they _are_ coming out with a Mac exploit "every single day". So while he may (or may not) be exaggerating the situation a little he is NOT lying.
Like it or not, there you have it. - danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2slick!
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"hurray for FUD. Its coming from everywhere."
Truer words were never spoken. - judgeFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1John Gruber spent some time looking a bit deeper into these claims, a good read as usual:
http://daringfireball.net/2007/02/lies_damned_lies_and_bill_gates - TritonX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a joke right ?
- TritonX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does Mac users really don't know ***** about computers or they know enough to know that windows makes you loose more time and productivity than any other OSes?
- iBoxSecurity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1that interesting, once a month is all he wants? im sure that could be done. Im sure he has made this statement cos if he is wrong and vista gets broken multiple times a month, he wont have to take the flac so much when he retires and the new guy steps up (cant think of his name of top of my head).
I really cant see vista being all that secure *grabs vista rtm disc and installs into vmware* - danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought the same thing. In the past, these types of comments would be met by marketing jargon and complete dismissal of the apple v. microsoft copying thing.
It seems like he's getting tired of hearing the same old accusations about security & apple. The one good thing is you don't hear as many jokes about stability anymore, so at least we're making progress. - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1You must be a Microsoft Clever Person 2007 Human Edition for Business to come up with that kind of joke.
(yes, this was meant to be ironic) - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I thought the same when I read Bill's quote. But really, __Month__ of Apple __bugs__ != An Apple total exploit a day
- Kahnza, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1He does it so people find holes and exploits so they can be patched. You'll find issues faster when there are crap tons of people trying to break it.
Yeah yeah I know, MS fanboi or something. Not really. The last thing I bought from MS was Windows 98. And I don't run a mac or linux. HINTHINT - michaelGregoire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mr. Gates... crack kills.
- SonicRush, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Duplicate story from yesterday with a different title. Digg the original people:

Interviewer: In many of the Vista reviews, even the positive ones, people note that some Vista features are already in the Mac operating system:
Gates: You can go through and look at who showed any of these things first, if you care about the facts. If you just want to say, "Steve Jobs invented the world, and then the rest of us came along," that's fine. If you’re interested, [Vista development chief] Jim Allchin will be glad to educate you feature by feature what the truth is.

Nowadays, security guys break the Mac every single day. Every single day, they come out with a total exploit, your machine can be taken over totally. I dare anybody to do that once a month on the Windows machine. So, yes, it took us longer, and they had what we were doing, user interface-wise. Let’s be realistic, who came up with [the] file, edit, view, help [menu bar]? Do you want to go back to the original Mac and think about where those interface concepts came from?
Also from page1:

"The number [of violations] will be way less because we’ve done some dramatic things [to improve security] in the code base. Apple hasn’t done any of those things." - zepplin99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I don't think people get it. Bill Gates has not got where he is today by being stupid. I think him throwing down the gauntlet to hackers is genius. It will only make Windows stronger. Think of the money he will save on finding the security holes themselves. All the hackers that love to break apart Microsoft can work for free....
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Don't base Vista on XP, that is what they're saying. Obviously, take it with a grain of salt though...
Whats with the rehash of this same interview? It has already been on the front page what, twice? - DanTheMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3what a crook. Is he really that blind to the reality of windows? I hope not. Hackers, please get to work.
- manifestdata, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5I noticed you said "Hackers, get to work," meaning you have no idea where to begin, or even the smallest amount of how to hack. Maybe thats why Macs never get hacked, the only people who use them are pompous asses who don't know ***** about computing. Or maybe its just this guy.
- PikkonX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I'm not sure why Apple promotes it's lack of viruses in those commercials as a positive, when the real reason there are so few of them is because no one cares enough about the OS to develop them because of the small userbase. You should never officially try to challenge the coding community though because it's a battle that you are almost certain to lose. But I guess as Kahnza said, that would be a good thing in this case.
- JesusXP, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Apple Fanboys are iDiots.
