- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -3/+67Facebook may not be evil yet, but it's getting really, really creepy...
- jquipp, on 12/05/2007, -2/+32Yikes`...`what a faux pas. Big brother wanna be.
- SeventhSon, on 12/05/2007, -0/+26No wonder it kept giving me that tinfoil hat ad.
- iceman0113, on 12/05/2007, -0/+21FTA: "Although according to the spokesman Facebook does nothing with the data transmitted back to its servers in these cases and deletes it, the admission will probably fan the flames of the controversy engulfing Beacon, which has been criticized by privacy advocates."
Then wtf is it doing with the data in the first place? - NYC83, on 12/05/2007, -2/+20i'd say the question is, given the mess they've been wading through over the last week or so, is facebook ever going to figure out a way to monetize their pageviews that justifies a $15B valuation. I'd say they should cash out while they still can.
- ResonantToe, on 12/05/2007, -0/+17By default I think anyone who's more intelligent than a shopping bag should be wary of a site that asks for all the personal information that Facebook does. I was watching a friend fill out a survey of random questions and the lovely "Who are you voting for in 2008?" came up. Irrelevant to her seeing as we're Australian, but clearly Facebook isn't even trying to hide the fact that It'll sell its vast network of information to whoever has the most cash!
Moreover the fact that you can never actually LEAVE the site! Even if all the Facebook users decide that it is a creepy oversight watchdog and leave, their information is still on the server until such a time that they decide to delete it. Regardless of your stance on it. I'm happy to sign up to a site like Digg that asks for an alias, email address and password, but beyond those random arbitrary values (and First and last name I lie about) I'm not giving any more.
Facebook's platform depends on its users honesty about personal information which judging by the site, people are more than happy to give up all to willingly yet at the same time, most would scream about privacy invasion if they found about Beacon and what it actually does. The simple matter is that, Facebook doing this through Beacon is not surprising, unexpected or shocking. In fact from what I've read, it is almost included in their Terms of Service, right alongside rummaging through your Garbage. If you are signed up to Facebook, then you should expect no privacy anymore. - Tserk, on 12/05/2007, -0/+16Gerstmann gets fired, Facebook is a joke and Iran gave up their nukes? I don't know what to ***** believe these days.
- themoosejuice, on 12/05/2007, -1/+16DING. Your friend John Doe is looking at midget porn. Would you like to buy some midget porn from amazon.com?
- Napoleone, on 12/05/2007, -0/+14Holding on to it until it figures out a way to profit from it.
- rejectnation, on 12/05/2007, -1/+15The question becomes: what is Facebook going to do about this?
- john2kx, on 12/05/2007, -2/+14Facebook used to be a nice website, before they started trying to be MySpace.. oh well..
- amawg9, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12Just like the stalkers who use it.
- Napoleone, on 12/05/2007, -5/+15The question should be: Why would anyone still use Facebook?
- xvrlax, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9Makes you wonder what they are getting ready to do with the data once they stop deleting it and start storing it. i only put certain things on that site in the first place and now they are watching everything i am doing. kind of scary. more intrusive than the federal government.
- victorycig, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9This was the final straw for me. Just deactivated my account and let them know exactly why.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+10You're doing it wrong.

- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -1/+8FYI
FACEBOOK = CIA - barroni, on 12/05/2007, -4/+11And people wonder why I refuse to join Facebook and Myspace
- BigGourgues, on 12/05/2007, -1/+7I think it's rediculous that a software can even do that while your logged off. This is a serious privacy issue, and they really need to get rid of that capability
- REDBLIND, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Doubleclick/Google scare me more than Facebook. The Doubleclick network is huge.
Just keep clearing those cookies. - Napoleone, on 12/05/2007, -2/+7Facebook is in effect doing Big Brother's dirtywork.
- asnow, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6If Facebook does not stop this spying it will find itself with many unsatisfied customers. In turn, their inflated stock will pop like a balloon. They are on thin ice.
- trickyt, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6They're trying to weed out all the "unprofitable" users.
- andrewpmk, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5BOYCOTT FACEBOOK
- pehpsi, on 12/05/2007, -3/+8Farcebook...
- ndnspongebob, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5fauxbook, why?!?!?
i trusted you ( you as in mega corporation ) - spyd3rweb, on 12/05/2007, -2/+6*Facepalm*
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4It would be great if Facebook could just be concerned with maintaining their userbase and providing a good service that respects their privacy, instead of jumping through hoops to find a way to make a profit at their expense.
- wumps, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Make a billion dollars?
- hdinh001, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4I don't understand why people are calling facebook the google killer.
more like future myspace lameness. no more bulletins about "give me comments," its more about how many stupid apps they have on. - Jareth86, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4I miss the old facebook. The simple design, the simple purpose.
I wish they'd bring it back... - 1CHAMONIX, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4This seems interesting because if you think about it Amazon and google probably do the same thing. They probably know I am writing this digg article right now. This is however a privacy issue and I am a huge promoter for privacy but I think this is a bigger issue than just FACEBOOK.
- tuntcickle, on 12/05/2007, -1/+5that's true, but you're missing the point: privacy is holy
- AdHaR, on 12/05/2007, -0/+41. Transmit data back to server for users that are logged off.
2. Hold the data.
3. ???
4. Profit - darthchaosrspw, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3I miss the days of ASCII art.
ASCII ART FTW - advil, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3We need more intelligent web browsers that are able to track such behavior against the user, and warn when privacy may be compromised. I really don't like the idea that "you did not tell us NOT to do it, so you must be OK with it". But I guess entering a website is like entering private property, and whoever is king of the house makes the rules. Assume everything...
- rabidbob, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4Facebook has adverts???
- dracostimpy, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3http://digg.com/security/Facebook_s_CIA_ties
Remember when intelligence agencies had to TRY to get your personal info? Why do the work for them? - inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3exactly. fyi, change the 'E' to a 'T' in facebook and you get factbook, as in the CIA factbook...
- Qeveren, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4I bet it's STILL downloading your info... :)
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2*Great, but unrealistic.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2interesting
- spcurtis81, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2Hmm! Disappointing. I am coming closer and closer to deleting my profile.
- simd, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2The $15bn valuation isn't accurate to begin with. While it may be a logical extension of Microsoft's valuation of their stake, you also have to take into account Microsoft was also buying exclusive rights to advertise on Facebook, which no future investor will be able to get. The in itself is almost certainly worth more than the shareholding itself.
- tuntcickle, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3probably nothing, to be honest. the social network's taken hold and people are too connected to leave
- spyd3rweb, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3Are you dissing captain picard?
- no1joel, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2"Last week we changed Beacon to be an opt-in system, and today we're releasing a privacy control to turn off Beacon completely. You can find it here. If you select that you don't want to share some Beacon actions or if you turn off Beacon, then Facebook won't store those actions even when partners send them to Facebook."

Chill out planet earth. - phatvolvo, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2I bet your name is actually Resonant Toe and that was some reverse psychology.
I saw what you did there. - MeatBiProduct, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1If someone called facebook the google killer you should just shake your head and walk away cause your talking to a ***** moron.
