- ThinkOutTheBox, on 05/30/2009, -1/+21Ok so can somebody tell me how the government is going to protect the internet in America from hackers and such if the FBI can't even protect their own computers?
- ryanonfire, on 05/30/2009, -6/+20"... attackers are sending malicious QuickTime media files to victims, exploiting an unpatched flaw in Apple's media format..." pfft lies everyone knows apple doesn't get viruses.
- inactive, on 05/31/2009, -0/+12They will form a committee, have meetings on how to put protections into place, spend billions of dollars while hiring companies to do a study on their networks, then go back to committee to discuss the results of the study.........meanwhile, all the technology has changed, the exploits that were talked about have long since been patched and now there are new security threats.......another few billion dollars are again spent on a study.......do you see a trend?
When things work at the speed of government, we can consider ourselves SCREWED. - mrsteveman1, on 05/31/2009, -2/+13Actually, the Mac platform tends to not be subject to the widespread virus problems that plague windows, but don't mistake that for security.
Apple as a company, is slow to react, slow to patch, and refuses to ***** say anything to anyone when there is a problem. At least Microsoft patches things as quick as possible in most cases. - Angelgirl61, on 05/31/2009, -0/+8they should hire the hackers!!!
- mrsteveman1, on 05/31/2009, -0/+8They patch things out of cycle when needed, sometimes individually.
Apple on the other hand ignores things for months (java, last week, read about it), or waits so they can pack it into a point release, or give it a pretty name like Security update 2009-001. - appleofdischord, on 05/31/2009, -0/+6Imagine the resume those guys would have.
"Wrote Blaster worm, causing untold millions in damages"
Hired! - twiztidsinz, on 05/31/2009, -4/+10And who develops QuickTime?
- thenativeraver, on 05/31/2009, -1/+7VLC for the ***** win!
- Zcrubby, on 05/31/2009, -0/+5Then they can install those custom GUIs with FBI logos on every single icon and background!

ACCESS GRANTED - whatit, on 05/31/2009, -1/+5Even on the website you've cited they list proprietary software as a reason for not switching to Linux.
- KPolulak, on 05/31/2009, -6/+10Moral of the story:
Run Linux. - NSResponder, on 05/31/2009, -0/+4Maybe we should call it "Redmond Syndrome".
-jcr - m3arvk, on 05/31/2009, -0/+4Pay attention. Such an attack will be used to justify a cyber-task-force which will have at its sole responsibility the limitation of free speech and surveillance of anti-NWO activism. The free exchange of ideas and an educated, interested, alert population are _the_ barriers to the enslaving of a populace.

- waydee, on 05/31/2009, -1/+4How can you not see that Windows 7 is heavily built on Vista? the similarities are huge, they're very closely related. Strange how everyone who actually, you know - USED Vista managed to get by with all these random ass errors happening everywhere isn't it? I don't recall any headaches from Vista infact, very strange.
You bandwagon idiots crack me up, all your idiot friends jumped off months ago but for whatever reason theres a hard core, clinging on while everyone else realised that yes, Vista is a good OS and is a significant upgrade from the very dated, bruised and patched XP it replaced.
Anyone who was around when XP was released will remember the exact same idiot backlash, swearing allegiance to Windows 2000 and even in some cases Windows 98 and claiming Windows XP to be the antichrist. Of course they quickly realised their ***** and quietly upgraded, if you refuse to use Vista because you're still riding the bandwagon then by all means believe Windows 7 to be some massively different, overhauled thing of beauty completely apart from Vista if thats what it'll take to make you finally adopt the platform everyone else has been using since 2006. - CATSCEO2, on 05/31/2009, -1/+3Spamming linux here is not needed. Besides, how likely is it that the FBI will read your comment and switch all of their systems to linux?
- bmatherlyjr, on 05/30/2009, -2/+4You forgot your sarcasm tags. :)
- mrsteveman1, on 05/31/2009, -1/+3Quicktime really isn't necessary, most of the formats that thing can play are standardized and supported on all platforms in multiple software packages.
- oomfoofoo, on 05/30/2009, -4/+6Just give it up, no one (except your fellow shills) is buying it.
- mrsteveman1, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2They patch faster than Apple, thats the point.
- Jaime2000, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1The Messiah’s government is pleased to return the rights of secrecy and privacy to you, its loyal subjects. For two days, your movements will not be watched, your conversations will not be listened to, and "do what thou wilt" shall be the whole of the law. God bless you, and goodnight.
~ V, V For Vendetta (With Minor Modifications) - dhinckley, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1They have a CLASSIFIED network with all the important information.
This hack was for the unclassified network.. - mrBitch, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1Actually, it's a little more involved than that :
http://bit.ly/QuickTimeDirectXexploit
" ... Microsoft on Thursday said it is working on a security patch for a vulnerability in its DirectX streaming media technology in Windows that could allow someone to take complete control of a computer using a maliciously crafted QuickTime file.
Microsoft offers an easy way to enable a workaround for the latest security hole in DirectX.
The remote code execution vulnerability exists in the way Microsoft DirectShow, audio and video sourcing and rendering software, handles supported QuickTime format files, the company said."
So it's not something Apple needs to fix, it's something Microsoft knows about and is trying to fix in DirectX.
It's a DirectX security hole being exploited via a malicious QuickTime file... - ThinkOutTheBox, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1Okay so if they have a classified network with all the important information, why is Obama going to make a Cyber Czar position?
- BraveLilToasta, on 05/31/2009, -1/+2Dugg for the use of the word "clobbered"
- JohnnySoftware, on 09/01/2009, -0/+1The article does not state that the viruses on the FBI network in question were spread/contained in QuickTime files, does it?
It just mentions the fact that Microsoft warned recently of such a flaw and exploit. The PC World article's author inserted that at the end of the article but fails to link it to anything about the incident discussed beforehand. Neither is QuickTime mentioned at any point afterward.
The article does not name anything as the cause or means of the infection.
In fact, the article precludes the reporter had any such evidence from the FBI of the infection being QiuckTime-based. The reporter himself, Robert McMillan (IDG News Service) spells that out in the article, when he says, "The FBI did not provide details on the security incident....".
Juxtaposing two things without explanation is an old propaganda trick.
You might be running the exact same versions of the exact same software the FBI was when it got infected, chortling about QuickTime when in fact that might not even have been on the infected computers at all!
The article seems to link the attack to the use of MS-Windows operating system, saying it is the same virus that hit another law enforcement organization - one that was using MS-Windows.
If you think about it, learning to read things carefully and critically, not overlooking crucial details, is a fundamental step in securing your computer. So is not jumping on the bandwagon of others who fail at this. Good luck in the future. - MicrosoftBob, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1Ha! Only one post, Nostradamus. (m3arvk)
- specialK16, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1LOL I DUNNO
- sk470, on 08/02/2009, -0/+1You see? Even the 007s of this world are not immune from hackers. It is a bit embarrassing though for such a high tech smart agency like the FBI to be infiltrated by the lowly wormy hackers.
- lateralus, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1The FBI is a bit behind on technology. They should've known Groupwise 3.x wasn't patched for the melissa virus yet.
- MicrosoftBob, on 05/31/2009, -1/+2Dugg.
And anyone who says that XP is more secure than Vista should not be giving anyone IT security advice. - arplayer2k, on 05/31/2009, -0/+1ThinkOutTheBox - you are thinking wayyy out of the box here my friend. They are fighting a War on Terror you free thinking hippie! /s
- Bangaarang, on 05/31/2009, -2/+2Why your going to be buried...
- TexMexRex, on 05/30/2009, -9/+9"...in order to install malicious software on Windows systems". Whoops, you accdently left that part out.
- FlyersPh9, on 05/31/2009, -2/+2I like the comment on the site "Had they upgraded to Vista they wouldn't have had this problem." You're right...had they been running Windows Vista, their computers would have encountered 3 random ass errors before even getting to the email with the virus.
FBI is MUCH safer using XP...or even 7, which isn't even official! Vista is the definition of garbage. - joaob, on 05/31/2009, -2/+2Anyone got a link to the webmail so I can verify?
- Dermbrau, on 05/31/2009, -1/+1If I was head of the FBI i would say that we have a huge cyber security breach ergo we need more money for cyber security. In all fairness running the latest version of firefox or using email in gmail would stop over half these attacks. There is no reason a government computer system or server should be less protected than my secondary laptop except for a department intentionally looking (read begging) for more funding.
- deltron0, on 05/30/2009, -3/+3durrrrrrrrrrr. How do I use interweb.
- daPhoenix, on 05/31/2009, -2/+2Wow, so fast.
Last week there was a security flaw in the libsnmp package on Linux (in my distro) and I was able to patch it a few hours after the announcement went out. With Microsoft you get to wait weeks or even months.
So please, cut the crap about MS patching fast. - AraleNorimaki, on 05/31/2009, -2/+0Eternity with nerds. It's the Pasadena Star Trek convention all over again.
- TexMexRex, on 05/31/2009, -3/+2Apple unable to make virus free software for the most virus riden OS on this planet? Shocking. And excellent burn on me!
- epheterson, on 05/31/2009, -4/+1Shoulda been using GMail
- seltaeb4, on 05/31/2009, -9/+5Defending Windows=Stockholm Syndrome
- Owch, on 05/31/2009, -5/+0How does I shot web?
- seltaeb4, on 05/31/2009, -11/+6"At least Microsoft patches things as quick as possible in most cases."
HAAAAAAAA!
That gets a 10+ on the Laugh-O-Meter.
