- perre, on 10/19/2009, -0/+26title fix. insert: "...in firm that monitors..."
- capyoda, on 10/19/2009, -1/+26Exclusive: U.S. Spies Didn't Buy Stake in Twitter
- kenwestin, on 10/19/2009, -0/+24Buried for false title. They invested money in a company that monitors Twitter, not Twitter themselves.
- ItWasOnlyAJoke, on 10/19/2009, -0/+18The title is somewhat misleading...

Its email, its encrypted and used to be illegal up until 1996. The only people reading it of course, would be people who actually do find it fascinating that you're going to the bathroom. - Misinformant, on 10/19/2009, -1/+15@CIA: "satellite zoom-in reveals bird ***** on ahmadinejad's left shoulder. gross lol"
- calicheese23, on 10/19/2009, -3/+15Government monitoring public posts? Who cares?
If you want to be pissed off about government invading privacy. Google Echelon. Google NSA Operations.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Echelon_%28signals_in ... - orlandogeek, on 10/19/2009, -0/+11Comes back to common sense. If you don't want it known, don't post it on a public forum.
- kemp34, on 10/19/2009, -1/+11Damn spooks.
- had3l, on 10/20/2009, -0/+8I seriously don't see a problem in monitoring PUBLIC communications.
As a matter of fact, it's the kind that they SHOULD be monitoring, instead of you know, the private ones. - spyd3rweb, on 10/19/2009, -3/+11The CIA gave Facebook its startup money...
- lewystud, on 10/19/2009, -4/+11"It doesn’t touch closed social networks, like Facebook, at the moment." - yeah right...
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -1/+7There should be a freak out the CIA day where everyone posts sentences containing the word bomb or hydrogen peroxide so their monitoring software goes berzerker.

- rwbrinso, on 10/19/2009, -0/+4Can you imagine having the job of "National Security Twitter Monitoring Intern"? That's right above "having to bang Tara Reid twice a day" on the list of world's most retched jobs.
- Squishy2009, on 10/19/2009, -1/+4This is why I don't use Twitter. Never will. This guy I knew tweeted that he was excited about his vacation... came back and his house had been robbed. Thanks, but I'll keep my private life private.
- vikingscool, on 10/24/2009, -0/+3I will cancel twitter's account! :)
- Jerryrad, on 10/19/2009, -0/+3I'm in your Internets watching you pee!

- sheeplescareme, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2Get off my internets!
- jugglingjon, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2not even our spy agencies are dumb enough to buy stock in Twitter.
- inactive, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2Any different than google?
- Angostura, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2You youngsters clearly don't remember the glory days of Usenet. It was widely understood/believed back in the early 90s that the CIA/NSA/FBI/Fill-in-spook-de-jour monitored newsgroups for keyboards. So many people's sigs were filled with references to bombs, weapons-grade-plutonium etc. In an effort to swamp their analysis capabilities.
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/19/2009, -2/+4that confused me. cuz they have the technology. if you apply for being a cop, they do background checks on you and can look into your facebook site, even if it is not public. so why can't the rest of the gov do it. or by applying are they inadvertently accepting the search?

Big Brother Big Business video - why it matters
http://www.american-synergy.com/Learning/Video/Tyr ... - inactive, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2Do we really think they need to invest in any of these social networks in order to spy on us? They already have been. Welcome to the age of information.
- rreadysetno, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2It'd be even more awesome if it was updated a little bit more.
- MidnightTide, on 10/19/2009, -0/+2Well, if they base it on popularity, then I have nothing to fear.......I hate my life.
/s - areyouserial, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2"But “even if information is openly gathered by intelligence agencies it would still be problematic if it were used for unauthorized domestic investigations or operations. Intelligence agencies or employees might be tempted to use the tools at their disposal to compile information on political figures, critics, journalists or others, and to exploit such information for political advantage. That is not permissible even if all of the information in question is technically ‘open source.’”
That's right it isn't permissible, and I'm sure it will never be used outside of the stated goals. laugh/cry - MWeather, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2Big deal. Just send out a bunch of trigger words and make them waste their time. Like this:
Jihad. Ammonium Nitrate. Newark.
OK, pick a target people actually care about, but you get the idea. - JohnnySoftware, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2The article actually says that the investment company bought a stake in Visible Technologies, which monitors the gamut of social media technologies. Does it say anywhere in there that they invested any money at all in Twitter? If it did, I missed it.
- JaxxBat, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1And the difference is ??
- vikingscool, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1Oooohhhh my!

- wewanttraffic, on 10/21/2009, -0/+1I think non of the popular social media is left from CIA or American spy agencies including facebook
- kreuzbergjakob, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Better, you look for bumps in it?!!? Get sure!
You're surrounded by security! Against security is no insurance! - austang, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1shh they are monitoring your digg comments
