Ethical...mhmmm. - GoKings, on 12/19/2008, -1/+29I feel like the movies have really given the general public a misguided definition of "hacker." Live Free or Die Hard set it back a decade.
- gameyharp, on 12/19/2008, -2/+22Becoming a CEH is not new at all...
- searcade, on 12/19/2008, -2/+13When was it required to ever leave the house to become a hacker anyway?
- subzero34g, on 12/19/2008, -0/+10Pay £1,800 for the course, get an A..and use those hacking skills to get your £1,800 back :P Ethical indeed. It's a win-win sort of course.
(As for the people who take things literally and don't understand jokes, forget everything you just read and go read a book or something) - Disease, on 12/19/2008, -1/+11WarDriving
- bagboyrebel, on 12/19/2008, -1/+9The link to "internet" was awesome.
- twystoffate, on 12/19/2008, -0/+5That's the first thing I said when I saw this. I got my CEH cert back in 2007, and there are many others who got theirs well before me.
- ronaldinho, on 12/19/2008, -2/+7Personally I thought it's kind of late for that. Even though you now try to teach everyone how to hack, all the methods that they will be taught will be outdated by the time they finish this course. Hackers are successful because they are always one step ahead....
- 2res, on 12/18/2008, -7/+12Isn't all hacking ethical?
- dandonia, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4That's true but the foundations will always be needed. How many people set up websites every day. Not all of them will know how to close the holes in their system.
- haikuFU, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4I doubt 300 hours is really going to teach you enough useful information to do it professionally. Additionally, what kind of ethical hacking course teaches you how to make viruses?
I've been in the security industry for a LONG time. I don't think anyone is really going to take this seriously. There are better courses and programs out there. - PHiZ187, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4Emo music? If you are going to make a poor generalization, I would have picked Industrial music...
- twystoffate, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4it's level 3 as far as EC-Council is concerned.
- vroom101, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4Master Foo and the Script Kiddie

- wuttupfool, on 12/19/2008, -2/+6i'd rather be a black hat
- 1what1, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4seems like you don't know the meaning off the word "hacking".
- SleepParalysis, on 12/19/2008, -0/+4I agree a bit when it comes to specific technical methods. One thing that won't be out-dated is social engineering.
- shortxstack, on 12/19/2008, -0/+3i was about to say the same thing. i'm in a class working towards a CEH right now. it's offered at my university.
- HonoredMule, on 12/19/2008, -0/+3"Hacking" and "cracking" are just different forms of the same objective: to alter existing technologies in ways the creator of the technology did not intend. No discussion of hacking ethics can sensibly focus on the /nature/ of the modification rather than the /purpose/. At their essence, hacking and cracking are no different than any other kind of remixing or evolutionary development that is the basis of art, technology, and even society itself.
- inactive, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2"However, since the skills learned during the course could easily be used for criminal gain, ICS said it is operating a strict vetting procedure......" and then what?
- 6oo63D, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2Ethical Hacking Course Launched. Since... er... er... Ninety-eight?... no... er...My God! I'm old!
- ohplease, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2
"328th penetration testing course launched" - MentalBeaver, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2Do I get a "Hackers" eyepiece?
- kenwestin, on 12/19/2008, -3/+5It works! They just ethically hacked their way to the Digg homepage.
Where do I sign up? Do I get a free T-Shirt that says I'm a hacker? Chicks will dig it. - bootup, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2I have a hard time understanding how enjoying the pursuit of knowledge can even be unethical. Clearly those teaching this course have no background in hacking. I'd say this course was unethical as it is defrauding people of money.
- iNoles, on 12/19/2008, -5/+7I wonder they are really meaning "cracking?"
- dandonia, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2What level of certification is that? Is GCSE (Level 2) A Level (Level 3) HNC (4) HND (5) Honours (6) Masters (7), etc.
- steviesteveo, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2Um, " I sure hope I can be taught to enjoy learning through visuals as right now I learn best through touch and I suspect that is one of the unethical."
That doesn't make sense to me, the article was fine though. A university is offering a course that will attract students with fees and the students hope that the qualification will make them more attractive to employers. What's to understand? - steviesteveo, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2A pointy one. With a robe.
Everyone loves Magical Trevor because the tricks that he does are ever so clever.... - steviesteveo, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2Yes, and Digg is linking you to it.
Sheesh, "social bookmarking site" - bootup, on 12/19/2008, -0/+2That's a load of BS. You either are or are not a hacker. It has nothing to do with computers. Just cause you have a Dr. in Computer Science doesn't make you a hacker. If you enjoy learning you are a hacker. Nothing more nothing less. I never came across a hacker while in school sadly. Hackers tend to dislike school as by design they hinder learning.
- steviesteveo, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2More slimming.
- steviesteveo, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2It certainly makes you an entry level hacker. Just sayin' If you work in a field do you really just leave off at the skills you had when you just qualified? You can either mess about with computers since you could walk and teach yourself or you can fast track with the use of formal education and then build on the basics as you work. You do how it is.
The people taking the course aren't actually going to compliment Angelina Jolie on her choice of laptop, they're going to go to businesses and say "I am a security consultant, how secure do you think your network is from hackers?" and if their boss says "How do you know that's what a hacker would do?" they can reply "I trained to understand how hackers work" and the boss can nod and sign the budget slips. - bootup, on 12/19/2008, -1/+3This makes no sense. You can't teach 'hacking'. If you understand what hacking is they are basically saying that they are going to teach people how to enjoy learning. I somehow doubt they will be very successful in that. What this also suggests is that learning is somehow ethical or not ethical. I didn't know that this could even be an ethical issue. I sure hope I can be taught to enjoy learning through visuals as right now I learn best through touch and I suspect that is one of the unethical.
- steviesteveo, on 12/23/2008, -0/+2300 hours is a long time for someone to be learning not many things, I think you'll pick up the basics quickly enough. This isn't intended to be anyone's sole degree "in the industry", it's a piece of CV padding that you get for not that much money.
What kind of ethical hakcing course teaches you to make viruses? One where the students hope to work for companies that are also worried about viruses.
Surely a security consultant would have thought of that already. - m3printing, on 12/19/2008, -1/+2Agreed.
- madiha1, on 12/21/2008, -0/+1can anybody tell me whats a price of this course
- thallium205, on 12/19/2008, -1/+2CEH is a scam.
http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/?q=ceh+scam - macdaddy9090, on 12/19/2008, -1/+2Depends on your definition of "hacking". I think "cracking" is a more appropriate term for criminal hackers. Hacking is more or less learning how things work.
- chrisbdaemon, on 12/20/2008, -0/+1You can't teach something like that in a course, it takes alot of time, experience, and experimenting to be good at it and CEH if I'm not mistaken is an entry level certification. Taking a course like this and getting a piece of paper saying your a certified ethical hacker doesn't make you a professional hacker. (not one a good one at least)
- StANTo, on 12/19/2008, -3/+3There's been an Ethical Hacking course running at Northumbria University for at least half a year now.
- Sefus, on 12/19/2008, -3/+3Haven't they been doing this for years. I used to hear commercials on the radio for Ethical Hacking classes at ECPI. oh wow. you can take classes online too?!
Buried. No news. - 6oo63D, on 12/19/2008, -1/+1What a rip-off! All what you need is just the passion and lots of time (on countless forums). Or pay $4000 to learn how to hack your own computer (and only that).
- 6oo63D, on 12/19/2008, -2/+2When you hack me it's ethical for you and unethical for me. (In other words some are more ethical than the others.)
- unco, on 12/19/2008, -3/+2to sign up for the course just enter your visa details in this hosted-in-china website
- imasuperDOTcom, on 12/19/2008, -6/+5Most amazing advertisement to make Digg front page ever. I mean seriously... what is new here? Certified ethical hacker... we get it. Been around forever.
But not from this new online school! Tada!
wow. - cddict1, on 12/19/2008, -3/+2going to enroll myself for this course.
