Religion + work environment = bad idea
Keep your personal views PERSONAL and you'll never have a problem at work. - beloitpiper, on 10/13/2009, -0/+70So it wasn't because of his political views, but because he couldn't get along with other employees.
- penskematerial, on 10/13/2009, -2/+72Politics do come into employment decisions, they shouldn't, but they do. I remember one place I worked at with about ten employees. Nine of us were pretty liberal, but guy number 10 was this ultra-right-wing Bill O'Reilly watching loon. No one got along with him and before long he was fired.
He wasn't bad at his job, but his outspoken views upset people and made work more stressful than it should have been. - Crimeodial, on 10/13/2009, -0/+47or maybe common sense would dictate that one shouldn't talk about politics at work?
- JackSrenton, on 10/13/2009, -5/+46The owner of our company sent out a memo that was blaming Obama for the cancellation of our company picnic.
It was amusing, kind of irritating and completely unprofessional. - madeingermany, on 10/13/2009, -18/+557. Our company will be renamed to KKK Office Solutions Inc. to reflect my believes.
Matt Brandt
President/CEO - publiclurker, on 10/13/2009, -2/+35If we were to tell you that he fired all of the minorities and kept the Jews out of accounting will you marry him as your true love?
- lolerskate, on 10/13/2009, -3/+35It always nice to get ***** for what you belive in.
- inactive, on 10/13/2009, -4/+36Dude... even *you* have to admit that comment was a pretty weak attempt to slag someone.
- tovarish22, on 10/13/2009, -7/+35WAAAAH! I DON'T WANNA HAVE A DEMOCRAT PRESIDENT! I WANNA HAVE A PRESIDENT WHO BELIEVES IN JESUS ENOUGH TO BOMB THE BROWN PEOPLE! WAAAAAAH
- brianbb98, on 10/13/2009, -1/+27Tell me about it. I swear I'd be fired if I told my boss I voted for Obama. I just spend whole day pretending to be stupid...
- hairyfro, on 10/13/2009, -2/+25I doubt this guy was fired for being an Obama supporter, but.... maybe he was? All I really know is that if you run a company and you pull a stunt like this, you're a huge idiot.
- tovarish22, on 10/13/2009, -6/+27WAAAH! WHY DO PEOPLE GET ANGRY WHEN I MAKE SWEEPING GENERALIZATIONS ABOUT A POLITICAL IDEOLOGY VIA A RELATIVELY UNDETAILED ARTICLE ABOUT AN EVENT I WASN'T PRESENT FOR? CAN'T THEY SEE THAT I AM ALL KNOWING AND CAN SEE THE MOST INTIMATE THOUGHTS AND MOTIVES OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED PURELY BY READING A SUB-1000 WORD ARTICLE ABOUT THEM?
WAAAH!
Seriously though, grow the ***** up. Do you honestly think this article provides enough details to know what really went on, and do you also think that the actors involved are indicative of the political atmosphere of this country as a whole? If you answered yes to either of these, do me a favor and never vote for anything every again. Not even American Idol. - capheine, on 10/13/2009, -1/+20Well, the dude is in sales. If he didn't make his quota, then yeah, there was good cause to fire him. Otherwise I wouldn't be surprised if the firing was motivated by something else.
- madeingermany, on 10/13/2009, -1/+20We debate politics and religion in our office. And we disagree on those topics a lot. You have to be able to separate that from work performance.
- mikerbob, on 10/13/2009, -3/+21I love it how the defense attorney says there is no way someone could think this is serious. I beg to differ. I know people who think like this. Unfortunately I'm even related to a few.
- SomeRandomGuy, on 10/13/2009, -1/+18public: It's not limited to right wings. Whack jobs of any sort make the topic unbroachable, not the subject itself.
I've had to deal with right wing, Green party and left wing whack jobs, and all of them just make the subject impossible to debate. - SomeRandomGuy, on 10/13/2009, -0/+16As long as you and your co-workers are cool, there's no reason you can't bring these subjects up at work. Understand that different people can hold different views, and that there is no definitive right or wrong and you can actually carry on religious and political discussion at work.
- rocknog, on 10/13/2009, -1/+17This is not a pro-Obama story, and this is not an anti-Obama story. In fact, Obama really has nothing to do with this story whatsoever. Yes, a dispute over political views is involved - but it doesn't matter what those specific views were, only that there was a dispute. If the person filing the lawsuit was fired for not performing well and is lying that he was fired for political reasons, that makes him a bad person, yes, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with politics, that just means he's personally dishonest. If he really was fired for being an Obama supporter, that has nothing to do with politics, it just means the president is petty.
So would the digg wingnuts please STFU already! Jesus, just because a story has "Obama" doesn't mean that the story is automatically a political one. You could replace Obama with cheddar cheese and have the dispute be over cheese preferences, and it wouldn't change a goddamn thing. - killamockingbrd, on 10/13/2009, -6/+21MOAR LIEK KKK OFFICE SUPPLIES, AMIRITE?
In all seriousness though, the e-mail was probably a lame attempt at humor. - Paranor01, on 10/13/2009, -0/+14@SomeRandomGuy: yeah, but you have to vet your audience before those topics should come up for discussion. if all agree on debate, instead of argument... then it should be fine. not everyone knows how to debate without taking it personally... then it's an argument :(
- dusthust, on 10/13/2009, -4/+17It's like a real life Michael Scott.
- publiclurker, on 10/13/2009, -2/+15You've never had to deal with a right wind whack job in the office I take it?
- bjornski, on 10/13/2009, -1/+14Religion is like a bowel movement.
If you have a great one, awesome. But keep it to yourself. I don't wanna hear about it. - bjornski, on 10/13/2009, -0/+12I do too, but the office isn't generally the best place to do it.
- RatatRatR, on 10/13/2009, -1/+13I just had a look through your comment history, and man, wanna talk about a joke...
- andreo, on 10/13/2009, -1/+12You can talk about politics all you want. But when your the odd man out you have to be an idiot to think your going to cram your views down someones throat and have them smile about it.
Test the water, see how other people are leaning and act accordingly.
Other then that it would be no different then a Klan member going to work at the NAACP and wearing his hood every Friday. There's bound to be some issues revolving around that. - Aero347, on 10/13/2009, -1/+12Back under the bridge troll
- BaphClass, on 10/13/2009, -2/+13Holy *****, that was funny.
- Paranor01, on 10/13/2009, -2/+12/* golf-clap
well said tovarish22 - geekworking, on 10/13/2009, -1/+11From TFA:
"the e-mail proved true when he was terminated two weeks after Obama was elected." - steelblackboots, on 10/13/2009, -0/+10so a+b=c+b???
that means a=c???
strange thing, this logic is... - rocknog, on 10/13/2009, -1/+11Whoa dude, lay off the Midwest, will ya? We're not all Kansas, you know.
- Paranor01, on 10/13/2009, -2/+12wow, take a chill pill dude.
do you masturbate to political discourse or something? - bobdigi, on 10/13/2009, -4/+13***** off you retard.
- Zomgondo, on 10/13/2009, -12/+21Why is it that this kind of ***** always seems to come out of the Midwest? First there was the company that was doing random drug testing for nicotine (and firing you if you tested positive), then there was the company that wanted to stick RFID tags in all their employees, and now this... what the *****, Red States?
- tovarish22, on 10/14/2009, -2/+11Pstall, what you fail to realise is that my posts were an exercise in hyperbole meant to amuse myself and others. Yours were just weak attempts at attacking an ethereal political "enemy" that is truly just in your head.
- rocknog, on 10/13/2009, -2/+11Totally agree. Unless you're a clergyman or a politician, likely neither religion nor politics has anything to do with your job, and you only run the risk of creating unnecessary tension. Myself, I simply answer in a series of noncommittal grunts whenever either subject comes up at work. Oh sure, I'll invariably come home to rant and rave on digg about these exact topics, but the point is I don't want to possibly set off a coworker because we have different views/beliefs.
- dasvoldus, on 10/13/2009, -3/+12Because it is legal to smoke you jackass.
You sound fat. - inactive, on 10/14/2009, -2/+10Tovarish: Don't explain yourself to that guy. He's not in what we call a "listening mood".
- Paranor01, on 10/13/2009, -0/+8mind if I steal that comment ? best i've heard for religious conversationalists ever!
- Paranor01, on 10/13/2009, -0/+8and that topic is related to this how ?
unless you're suggesting that is in Obama's plan. and if that's the case, then you would have been listening to Bachmann, Beck & failinPalin too much... so I would hope you're not suggesting it :) - jackalsclaw, on 10/13/2009, -0/+8It's in there "threat level" section, where the talk about how technology (like email) can threaten your life/work/rights .
- cheddaro, on 10/13/2009, -5/+13There is absolutely no reason why you should be discussing politics at work. Of COURSE it's going to piss someone off. That someone may end up being your boss.
Same goes for religion or lack of religion.. Keep it to yourself. No one cares. - JCEEZ, on 10/13/2009, -0/+8but your boss doesn't send out an email to everyone saying all that retarded crap
- madeingermany, on 10/13/2009, -0/+7@publiclurker: Somebody that you can't have a discussion with, can not ever be a good boss.
I do consider myself lucky, that I never had to work for one. - twiztidsinz, on 10/13/2009, -0/+7Maybe the boss should have taken that advice....
- aywwts4, on 10/13/2009, -1/+8aqua: Well this guy wanted a stupid president, why wouldn't he expect the same from his employees?
Badabing!
(Eh kidding, McCain wasn't stupid, lets leave it at Bush and Palin) - milkmage, on 10/14/2009, -0/+7half of my office is East Indian, the other half Pakastani. In addition to religion and politics, we don't talk about cricket.
- magus_melchior, on 10/14/2009, -0/+7Okay, first off: basic philosophy is NOT algebra.
Second, capheine didn't make any assertion that politics is religion or vice versa*-- you went there of your own accord, which is a syllogistic error. It's like saying real and imaginary numbers are the same because they are both numbers, or saying that lions and boa constrictors are the same because they are both animals. capheine was making the case that both his statements are two examples (subsets) of a Bad Thing, not that the two statements are functionally the same. So you should really resent your own reasoning (or lack thereof).
* Having seen/read the lives of many modern Christian leaders and lay politicians, in many cases the two really are equivalent. Ask Sun Myung Moon. -
