Except everyone with a pacemaker. - fatalflaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2(In a remote location somewhere in Iran in the not so distant future) : Achmed! Achmed!!! What is this?! My iPod no longer works! I cant how you say, get jiggy with it! Damn you RIAA!
- zonk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1say goodbye to having kids...
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Y'know what, this DOES have anti missle possibilities. A targeted ICBM could be disabled by another rocket with an EMP warhead - they wouldn't even have to touch. Just get within whatever the range of these things are.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1EMP devices are non nuclear. They are driven by conventional explosives.
The trigger profile seems to be just before it reaches the detonation point.
A magnetic coil. ( electro magnet ) charged. Then the explosive charge is detonated thats in the
center of that coil. The sudden collapse of that large magnet field creates a large but very local EMP pulse. - porksoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1breakneckridge:
i hear the Telegram business is booming - ccrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Faraday cages.
- nebbyfoshebby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think that an emp warhead is more scary than a normal one.You can take my life but dont take my computer :(
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's an interesting idea; The US might want to store a giant EMP weapon in every American city so that if they ever found out that a nuke was slipped into the city and detonation was imminent they could fire off a giant EMP and stop the detonation. If it works, you've ***** your entire city's electronic infrastructure, but at least no one is killed and the city is still standing. If it doesn't work, well, it doesn't matter anyway.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the nice thing about this weapon is that all the occupants inside get the equivelant dosage of sleeping on a magnetic pillow for 10000 nights... :)
- rguevara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those are great and very useful, I hope they get it working on time before the protoss invasion...
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And for those wondering why this is being heavily pursued there is a one word answer:
China
Invasion of Taiwan in 2012, anyone? - VegaObscura3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If the US had these, they would use them in every city in every country and say "We have reason to believe there are nuclear weapons there. No we can't tell you where we got this information, it's confidential".
- mikeyG9x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"All you Dr Evil types! - Think small, not big!"
The whole thing about world domination is the idea of dominating the WORLD, not your local neighborhood.
It's not just about art anymore...
http://eiu.org/experiments/i-bomb/ - shenzi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought it was a fairly simple and standard procedure to "harden" certain equipment against EMP? ... for example Faraday cages
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, it would just be 1 city, not the whole country! And depending on how closely you could triangulate the position of the nuke, it could just be a few city blocks. And that's on top of the fact that if a coutry could lob a nuke tipped icbm at us they wouldn't need to try and smuggle one into the city in the first place.
- sanmarcos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CHINA
- ReinMasamuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Or even better, all those nuclear weapons labs in Iran
- mikeyG9x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Somebody should make a ginormous EMP with a shell of unobtainium, send it to the center of the earth, and then detonate. Talk about world domination, especially when your base is on the moon.
Muahhahahahahahahahahaahaha.
$1Million and I won't do it... - thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now we all just need to dig out our old AT computer cases, the ones that were 10lbs of reinforced steel, to encase our current computers for EMP protection. Toss out that chinsy Alienware wannabe plastic case.....
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OOh oooh, does it put off a blue neon sphere when it goes off???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The world of Deus Ex has arrived.
***** awesome! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and if it works then the US is basically a third world country waiting to be devestated by the following missile storm....
- camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Okay, who wants their circuits rare, medium or well done?
- gkewney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All you Dr Evil types! - Think small, not big! http://www.theikew.co.uk/2006/02/noisy_parties_a.html shows a useful home application for a personal EMP device...
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another thing, is this thing ballistic? It'd be useful for it to trigger even if it is blown up by another missle.
- wavesmash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Get's rid of the squiddies too
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was thinking more along the lines of Dark Angel. Pre or Post Pulse? ;)
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm buying stock in an abacus company right now.
- B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bring on the sentinels :D I saw a documentary about emp. Deep inside one of Britain's cold war bunkers where they showed the effects of emp on a PC in slow motion. It really was the ***** ^_^
- Taynk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"(In a remote location somewhere in Iran in the not so distant future) : Achmed! Achmed!!! What is this?! My iPod no longer works! I cant how you say, get jiggy with it! Damn you RIAA!"
ROFL..... "Achmed! Achmed!!!" .....this is great! - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't think it was all that hard to protect a computer system against a EMP pulse? I'm sure i've seen that cheyenne mountain has systems in place for this kind of thing. Because you don't want your stargate crashing while your trying to escape whoever launched the thing....
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reminds me of the last season of 24.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool. A bomb that doesn't kill people.
- Darkness123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can protect machines against EMP.
- FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Electro-Magnetic Pulse, disables any electrical system within the blast radius, only weapon we have against the machines." - Trinity "The Matrix"
We are ALMOST THERE! - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0EMP is useless against military bases. Military bases in Russia, China and Europe have already been built with protection against it in mind. Protection from the EMP emitted by nuclear explosions.
These EMP bombs are more like a terror weapon against civilians. If they will even be developed at all. So far, they have not worked except in bad movies and TV shows. - Reddog_x2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This could be good or bad. In some cases, you could take out an enemies defensive capabilities, walk in, take out a few specific people, remove some weapons and leave everyone else unharmed.
Or, you could set one off in the dead of winter & let nature take it's course. - pentomino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want a short-range EMP device that can be focused on the stereos of passing cars.
damn subwoofers. - tnprogrammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone mentioned planting one in every city to stop a possible terrorist bomb. Can you imagine some cult that is dedicated to returning human society to its "natural state" setting this thing off in every city at the same time? Bye bye modern life, hello stone age.
-Sorta like Escape from L.A. eh?
cool. A bomb that doesn't kill people.
-Unless it or its parts happen to land on them from a great height..... - MarcTheLad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0New eBay business: Faraday Cages 4U
- amitkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great, another reason to stay in bed
- FelixdaaHack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hell...in 2001 Popular Mechanics showed you how to make one
http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/defense/1281421.html - bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ccrook
Faraday cages.
That's right *****. - marmaduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tinfoil hats on...
- master_of_fm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great now I am gonna have Tina Turner stuck in my head all day long
- theman8631, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ooooh oooh does it detonate a demo mans pipes and deal damage based on the ammount of ammo your carrying?
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It's too bad that we didn't have technology like this when invading Afghanistan. Just think of how much easier it would've been to catch Osama up in the hills if we could've used a few EMP bombs to disable the many electronic devices they keep in mud huts over there.
Good thing that purely mechanical guns aren't prevalent in the 3rd world anymore, either... -
