- angel.wardriver, on 09/30/2009, -1/+24Gotta love the EFF!
- Barackalypse, on 09/30/2009, -7/+24Executive Summary: We'll spy on anyone we choose for any reason and we aren't obliged to inform anyone. Your own Congress and President (Bush or Obama, pick whichever you hate more because they're both to blame) have sold you out.
And no, I'm not even exaggerating: "The Mukasey guidelines, among other things, gave the FBI the authority to open investigative “assessments” of any American without any factual predicate or suspicion. " - elijahyossie, on 09/30/2009, -0/+17Good for them - why did the FBI take so long to respond?
- spriggig, on 09/30/2009, -1/+15Is this that transparent government thing I voted for? Sounded like a good idea, what happened?
- EnderSaveUs, on 09/30/2009, -1/+11that's some real EFFin win right there.
- gcnaddict, on 09/30/2009, -0/+7"heavily censored" --is there enough for us to actually know what's going on?
edit: for the most part, it seems like there is. - mst3kcrow, on 09/30/2009, -1/+8Because the FBI probably wanted to keep it a ssecret.
- WhiteHatTrick, on 09/30/2009, -2/+8You make it sound like that means this is not a problem
- weaksnyc, on 09/30/2009, -0/+6Well, for one, it also helps to smoke out the people who intend to ***** all over our constitution.
Oh and I'm referring to you if that wasn't clear enough.
Why don't we all just live in locked, see-though chambers, have our entire lives recorded, and require a pass to go to the bathroom? We can be sure we're safe from all the turrrists then! - poprocksandsoda, on 09/30/2009, -1/+6I agree it's not. Sounds like good common sense.
- Friendlyhazard, on 09/30/2009, -2/+7you make it sound like this is new.
- gcnaddict, on 09/30/2009, -2/+7Oh hey, this isn't terribly bad:
b. (U) Ethnicity may be considered in evaluating whether a subject is-or is not--a
possible associate of a criminal or terrorist group that is known to be comprised of
members of the same ethnic grouping-as long as it is not the dominant factor for
focusing on a particular person. It is axiomatic that there are many members of the
same ethnic group who are not members of the group; and for that reason, there must
be other information beyond race or ethnicity that links the individual to the terrorist
or criminal group or to the other members of the group. Otherwise, racial or ethnic
identity would be the sole criterion, and that is impermissible.
(document 1, page 32 in the doc, 43 in the PDF) - starlon2, on 09/30/2009, -0/+4Redacted documents released after a court order remind me of the commercial where the kid's given a bike, but the kid can't leave the small circle surrounding the bike; the kid knows this isn't right, and the adult acts like nothing's wrong.
- ElSnuggles, on 09/30/2009, -0/+4So the FBI can open an "Assessment" on me w/out any suspicion of wrongdoing or connection to foreign powers? So I guess that means an agent can do an "Assessment" on his ex girlfriend to find out who she is dating now or if she cheated on him?
Wow, I feel safe and secure. =/
Awesome job EFF! Keep up the good work. - Mardala, on 09/30/2009, -0/+3general government bureaucracy, with having to have some intern actually do the highlighting .. no surprise on why it took so long.
- redhook, on 09/30/2009, -0/+3If you knew anything you would know that our rights have been getting chipped away since way before Bush Sr. even came into office.
- shaelen, on 09/30/2009, -0/+2I think you need the sarcasm slashy at the end of your question, because I know there aren't any intelligent people in this country who actually still think the way you do.
- kopiwrite, on 10/01/2009, -0/+2So they could heavily censor it before releasing, obviously.
- anonymousmedic, on 09/30/2009, -0/+2Farah Khan sucks.
- tugger, on 09/30/2009, -1/+3typical super-right wing paranoia.
America, land of the free. /s - WhiteHatTrick, on 09/30/2009, -1/+3Actually, your apparent lobotomy should sufficiently protect your brain waves from being intercepted, no foil hat needed.
- MWeather, on 09/30/2009, -0/+1It's been a problem, which makes the sudden surge of interest odd to say the least. Even COINTELPRO didn't get this kind of response. Maybe the right would be more receptive if it was spun as anti-hippie surveillance.
- LastDawnofMan, on 10/01/2009, -0/+1Great to know what rules you're going to be ignoring, they say.
- gcnaddict, on 09/30/2009, -0/+1What led you to think that I didn't know what the term "axiomatic" meant?
It's typically considered a wise idea to avoid jumping to conclusions. My comment was a somewhat snarky remark aimed primarily at the tinfoil-hat group members who keep their viewpoints about a wretchedly evil FBI/CIA/etc. alive despite evidence indicating at least some degree of neutrality. - universeman, on 09/30/2009, -2/+3EFF is tied for first place with the Campaign for Liberty on my site givv.org, which allows you to break up a single monthly donation across as many nonprofits as you like - then show others what you're giving to. Those of you who like this, why not go to givv.org, set up a microdonation for EFF, send them a buck or so every month to help fund what they're doing?
- anonymousmedic, on 09/30/2009, -1/+1I don't see a problem with it. Maybe you should pick up one of those books called a dictionary and learn the meaning of axiomatic.
Reading comprehension for the win. - vjack11, on 10/13/2009, -0/+0hi sweaty hor r u ??????
- tugger, on 09/30/2009, -2/+2but you can trust a texan monkey who allowed the FBI to set up the whole big brother 'guilty until proved innocent' supposedly anti-terrorist idea?
Give.Me.A.*****.Break. - Barackalypse, on 09/30/2009, -8/+6Exactly what the skeptics said would happen when they said you can't trust a lawyer-politican from Chicago.
- anonymousmedic, on 09/30/2009, -8/+1You sound Paranoid.
- Nerden, on 09/30/2009, -8/+1Tin-foil hats at the ready
- poprocksandsoda, on 09/30/2009, -10/+1Why? What value does this information provide but to aide enemies of our country in circumventing controls and procedures used to smoke them out domestically?
