- PuterPrsn, on 02/23/2009, -0/+21Not, not eBay - Auctiva, which is a 3rd party software company that makes an application that makes it easier to post "pretty" and more functional auctions that using the built-ins on eBay or their Turbo-Lister software.
- rolf, on 02/24/2009, -0/+15"Even Giant Internet Business Ebay got infected with malware??"
No. Learn to read. - PuterPrsn, on 02/23/2009, -4/+18So they're recommending virus software? Where was their server virus protection??
- Khast, on 02/24/2009, -1/+14People still sell on eBay? I mean the way they keep jacking up the fees, and forcing Paypal as the only method of payment (US only)... I would think that people would've scattered looking for somewhere which doesn't charge over 10% of the total final value... Or kick the sellers off if you have less than a 4.1/5 rating in any category. (4.0 = Satisfactory)

SUBJECT: Information regarding Auctiva’s Site Warning
February 23, 2009
7:30 PM PST
On Thursday, February 19 we discovered the presence of malware on the Auctiva servers. This caused Google to flag Auctiva as a dangerous site. Our Systems Engineers identified the malware through our monitoring system and they immediately began working to isolate the infected servers and take them offline. During this process the site was running on fewer servers and you may have experienced some delays.
The infected servers were wiped clean and by Saturday morning, most servers were put back online. As of Sunday night, Google rescanned Auctiva.com and determined we were safe to navigate. However, upon continued monitoring today, additional malware was detected and we decided to temporarily take Auctiva.com offline to eliminate the possibility of further infection. We take the security of our site very seriously. We have identified the source of the problem and we are working 24/7 to resolve the issue. We will bring Auctiva.com back online once we are confident we can provide the level of safety and security for our customers that we have for the past 10 years.
What can you do now?
If you visited www.auctiva.com between Thursday evening and Saturday afternoon at about 2 PM PST, as a precautionary measure we recommend taking the following actions to ensure that your computers are not infected:
Clear your browser cache, delete ALL temporary internet files, and restart your browser. For instructions specific about your browser: http://community.auctiva.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/10 ...
If using a Windows machine, make sure you are updated with all the current Microsoft updates and patches.
Make sure you are running reputable antivirus software.
Use the Firefox browser if possible, as it has been shown to be less susceptible to this sort of malware than Internet Explorer.
During this time your Auctiva Checkout, scheduled listings, and images, templates and scrolling gallery in listings on eBay will remain available.
As we work through this issue we will post regular updates on our Community Forums http://community.auctiva.com/eve/forums/a/frm/f/10 ...
Sincerely,
Kevin Kinell
VP, Engineering

- CyberStriker, on 02/24/2009, -2/+10"Auctiva recommended using Firefox, as that browser is "less susceptible to this sort of malware than Internet Explorer.""
Awesome quote! Made my day. :)
Seriously, anyone who still uses that piece of ***** browser Internet Explorer deserves to get hacked. - fitzfan, on 02/24/2009, -1/+9Ebay has a competitive advantage. Sure you can try to sell on a different site, but eBay has the most buyers so you will get the most money there. Similarly if I am looking for something specific eBay has the most sellers so thats where I will be looking.
It is going to be tough for another site to build of the membership base to over take eBay. I fully expect it to happen, website can evolve so fast on the internet, but it wont be easy and Id expect it to still be a few years out. - DJWilsonX, on 02/24/2009, -7/+13PayPal= AIDS of the Internet.
I don't trust them period. - brainflakes, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5Antivirus is still important! Security holes aren't the only way viruses can spread.
Say an OS has perfect security, no exploits at all. Someone downloads some "free" software, software asks for the admin password to install, BAM! It could put any virus / spyware it wants on there. - twiztidsinz, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5Hey! I use Internet Explorer....
...to download Firefox. - videodroner, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5Malware and Reflectoporn. Ebay is grand.
- fitzfan, on 02/24/2009, -0/+4/drunk
- reeds1999, on 02/24/2009, -0/+4Auctavia did the right thing by notifying their base of the problem. Good for them!!
Had it been e-bay themselves or paypal that was infected IMHO the users would have been fed a line of BS blaming everything in the whole world except e-bay or paypal for the problem! - darthjure, on 02/24/2009, -0/+4My Google browser warned me of this when I was browsing ebay, but I didn't listen. Luckily, since I was using Chrome it sounds like it wasn't an issue for me anyway!
- brainflakes, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4What's PayPal got to do with this?
- jjintheuk, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Good for Auctiva for recognising the problem. Google I hate eBay and Paypal - money grabbing, rule hoarding bastards
- jjintheuk, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Read the ***** article, or even the description will do
- jjintheuk, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Counting the companys earnings
- twiztidsinz, on 02/24/2009, -1/+3correction...
eBay has the most Nigerian Princes.... - unusualbob, on 02/24/2009, -3/+5we saw it the first time, and we will bury this one too
- macmcraeart, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2Rhino is FULLY AWESOME.
- MightyUpsetter, on 02/24/2009, -1/+2No. Nobody uses ebay anymore.
Idiot. - columbiaglass, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1I am one of those sites that wants to compete with ebay and it is very true it is a tough road to plow to get the numbers to show results. Ebays shift to a paypal only site was a definite shot in the foot of the giant and only time will tell how much damage was done with the move. I would gladly take those folks that do not want to use a paypal account on my site. All legal payment forms are accepted on Northwest Blvd Auctions. There are a number of sites that have had some growth from the paypal only move ebay made. Membership is a large task but anything can happen on the net.
- iv81, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Ebay is a Joke!
After years of buyng and selling on ebay and having 100% feedback
On May 21'st 2009, ebay decided they had to suspend my account.
After calling and emailing them for the reason, they never gave me one claiming they had to protect the buyers information. (that's
odd, since I never sold anything in the past year)
So uppon further investigation, it turns out a not so smart buddy of mine had been lending his ebay account to somone to sell fake
cologne and some jewelry in exchange for 10% proffit.
But why did my account get suspended along with his account on the same day? Very simple. It seems ebay somehow assumes that if two
accounts get logged on the same computer/ip then it must be the same person. Since I do recall logging into my ebay account from
his computer to order something.
Should I bother contacting ebay to have their min wage ***** review their practices and policies to get my account back? I
don't think so.
They truly are the weakest link and it's not in my best interest to have ebay gain anything out of it. Eventualy they will realize
their mistake but it will be too late for them and the sellers who lost my buisness. - aphexcoil, on 02/24/2009, -4/+4F- Horrible Seller. Sent me their product before auction even began.
- bootup, on 02/24/2009, -4/+4I wish people would stop using anti-virus/anti-malware software. The computer security industry is one big fraud and just propagates misinformation for its own gain. There is NO real way to stop malicious infectious applications apart from FIXING the holes. You can't do that unless you have the source code. There isn't a single computer security company (not even Microsoft) who has access to the majority of MS Windows programs. To claim you have a total "security" solution is unethical. Yet- that is exactly what every "computer security" company does now.
I bring this up to clients all the time. I need to remember to inform them that the only remotely practical solution to security is GNU/Linux. Even though others open source solutions exist they aren't remotely practical. GNU/Linux is barely practical for a small percentage of the masses. - inactive, on 02/23/2009, -18/+18Even Giant Internet Business Ebay got infected with malware??
