- RyGiL, on 07/02/2009, -0/+48What an interesting article to read while I'm on vacation... Wouldn't it suck if a bad person found out I was away from my home located at 5225 Figueroa Mountain Rd. Los Olivos, CA 93441!
- Jerryrad, on 07/02/2009, -0/+46Tom robbed my house while I was on vacation. Tom is no longer my friend.
- 3tcp, on 07/02/2009, -1/+32Oh hey, that's a good idea. I hadn't thought of robbing people who posted that they were on vacation on social networking sites. Maybe I'll try that. Thanks for the tip Yahoo!
- linagee, on 07/02/2009, -1/+29What's the name of the ex-girlfriend that lives at that address?
- dvsbastard, on 07/02/2009, -0/+18I think it's a little different than an answering machine message, seeing as that would clearly indicate that no one is home. If I am on vacation, who is to say whether or not I have room mates / family / friends / house sitter or anyone else still at my place of residence?
- Callum2008, on 07/02/2009, -0/+17Michael Jackson
- roostersheep, on 07/02/2009, -1/+17Once, a friend of mine posted a message on facebook saying "I'm off for a 3 hour drive to Blackpool!" If only he knew the dangers of vacation posts. He spontaneously combusted.
- monodelasno, on 07/02/2009, -0/+16Didn't you ever watch Home Alone?
- sjaskow, on 07/02/2009, -1/+15Um, no, he's dead, since that's the address for Neverland. Or did I miss the sarcasm tag? :-D
- borez, on 07/02/2009, -2/+14A little paranoid don't you think.
Although I do use Logmein to check on my baby from time to time. - s0nicfreak, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11Your baby uses a computer?
- cyssero, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11His baby *is* a computer.
- Pssdoff, on 07/02/2009, -0/+10Its not a security risk if you have security cameras, or if you booby-trap your house before you leave... What burglar would be expecting to find a colony of angry africanized bees in that giant unlocked safe in your living room?
- uptwolait, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9"Hi, this is Julia. Sorry I can't take your call, I have a day off from working my modeling job, so I've decided to unplug the telephone and spend the day skinny dipping at my secluded pool here behind the beautiful home my ex-husband bought me just before he left the country."
- iMattK, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9Seems reasonable that people shouldn't be so detailed about their personal lives online, but hey this is the 21st century and anything goes...including stupidity.
- chadsmith729, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9I'm out of the office Thursday July 2nd thru Sunday July 5th. I will return on Monday July 6th.
If you need further assistance please contact chadsmith728, or chadsmith730. - primatage, on 07/02/2009, -2/+10you're not really on vacation at all are you....
- JinxCrow, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8Common sense anyone? Anyone? No? Dust? Anyone?
You tell a trusted friend to watch the house and that's it, and don't announce it to the public. Sorta like when you have someone at home when you have a memorial or wake, because robbers target those houses too. - smack1700, on 07/02/2009, -0/+8People are incredibly naive and stupid if they think it's a good idea to let the world know where you are at all times.
And it isn't really paranoia at all; many break-ins are committed by someone the person knows. And they usually know if you're on vacation and when you'll be away from your home. - charlietuna, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7*Anytime* information is revealed -- would be criminals can benefit.
So yes. - borez, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6^correct.
- ladfrombrad, on 07/02/2009, -0/+6What a cool idea.
Next time I see someone post something of the sorts of "I'm loving the 35C sun in Turkey!!!" I'll kindly inform them that their house has been emptied and burnt to ashes... - cersad, on 07/02/2009, -1/+7Well, DUH.
Also, dugg for Hyman. - umdigger, on 07/02/2009, -1/+6Hmm, maybe I'll post that I'm on vacation and then sit in the dark shadows of my living room with my Glock waiting...
- spazzcat, on 07/02/2009, -2/+7Get better friends if you need to worry about getting robbed when your on vacation.
- askantik, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5Heh, seriously. Leave it to Yahoo!. I'm sure somewhere on this article it says, "Source: the Internet."
- 3branch, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Muma Jay
- monodelasno, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5He calls her Mom
- Moralogic, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5Question: Has home burglaries went up at all? If not, then I think the probability of this increasing security concerns is wasting Digg space.
- diggerado, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Duh. Seriously? People wonder if broadcasting "I'm not home" is a problem?
- ebedeer, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4It depends on where you are living.
- Nangbaby, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3It's a risk if you post too much identifying information about yourself on-line in the first place.
That being said, for most people it's not that much of as much of a risk as the article suggests. I highly doubt someone will break in to my house because I broadcast that I left for vacation. It's far more likely that someone will break into your home based on the physical evidence that you're not there and direct observation than based on tweets, since it's far less work for a burglar to use his or her own eyes and ears. - atroxodisse, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3You're a bad friend.
- smartnerd666, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Believe it or not,
George isn't at home.
Please leave a message... at the beep!
I must be out, or I'd pick up the phone,
Where could I be?
Believe it or not, I'm not home!
-George Costanza - inactive, on 07/02/2009, -2/+5People go to some elaborate measures to look like they are home when they are not, I always thought they were maybe just paranoid. I lock my doors that's it.
- ShiftyBizniss, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2dugg for still getting your daily fill of digg, even while on vacation.
- BossKey, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Im in ur hous, takin all ur stuf
1 minute ago from Tweetie · Reply · View Tweet - ModernDayDarwin, on 07/02/2009, -1/+3because for most people tomorrow is a holiday.
- MaverickAlex, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Sadly you would be the one if jail if you booby-trapped your house.
- thefreehunter, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2umm... 911? What could go so terribly wrong that you would need an emergency number for a website that offers no guarantee, nor SHOULD offer any guarantee.
- kreatre2007, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2It's terrible how we now have to be so secretive. Every time technology brings us something really great... (email, blogs, Twitter, chat programs, FaceBook, etc.), someone always perverts them into something nefarious or annoying.
- Talphin, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Or another burglar who beat them to it, and is there right now with a gun.
- kuchie, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2I think a lot of people who use answering machines and have people who call them would in fact change their phone message when they go on vacation.
- opitica, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Well for me they don't. Why would i tell people i'm out robbing them?
- rdoger6424, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Yeah, but his wife was watching the house while he was gone, so he was fine.
- bzaks, on 07/09/2009, -0/+1http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q& ...
- BossKey, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1You forget the efficiencies of technology. Instead of noticing one house on your block, you could just run a daily Twitter search on "going on vacation"-type phrases tweeted near your location.
- psicolonia, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1I always twitt my folowers where the key under the carpet is... ups... not under the carpet...
