- joel2600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4phishing will never be passe.... to say that means you know very little about security.
when thinking about any type of security, you always want to focus on the lowest common denominator, and when dealing with technology this will most always be the users.
When targeting users, when you find ways to trick them out of their information or find ways to use information you gain from them to impersonate them, then no matter how strong your other security elements are... they become irrelevant.
Thus the more secure systems become, the more popular phishing techniques become.... just because of the simple fact that people will be focusing on impersonating legitimate users rather than try and circumvent the system somehow. - HarryBauzonia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From the story.
"They can even be embedded in Web pages, taking advantage of browser features that allow programs to run automatically."
Solution: Don't surf with Internet Explorer. Don't let your friends or family use it either. - Dash-2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2keyloggers are nothing new.. this story is stupid
- loup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"In other breaking news today, thieves no longer have to mug you to get your money at the ATM. They can set up a simple card reader and monitor the keypad to see what you put in for your PIN"

Considering that Social Engineering is and has always been the most common and effective method of gaining unauthorized access to protected computer systems since the olden days of dumpster diving I think this might very well be the understatement of the year. - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are there any programs that automatically detect and eliminate keyloggers?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+165 now :P
- jjustice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm suspicious of the technical accuracy of any article that coins a word starting with "cyber-" in the title :-)
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw this documentary about Brazil once. It's a strange land.
http://imdb.com/title/tt0088846/ - betona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been monitoring my mail server on where the spam's coming from and interestingly enough, Brazil has been moving up the charts. Coincidence?
- TrulyNameless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing new about it..using keyloggers
lame - po6ot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0keyloggers/keystroke recorders are nothing new. Sucks to use Windows...
- cathode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where do I put in my password and credit card number to read that article?

Just because something is passe doesn't mean that people won't do it. It just means that it isn't the BIG thing anymore. - tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OMG they have technology that can log my keystrokes?! NO, get out of here.
- DigitAl56K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"keyloggers/keystroke recorders are nothing new. Sucks to use Windows..."
There's no reason that you can't use an exploit to install a key logger on any OS. Stop bashing Windows. - 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know that macs and linux machines aren't invulnerable but when was the last time you heard of a keylogger for iether. It really is a windows problem, at very least for now it is. Oh and how do people that have never heard of a keylogger before find digg?
These problems will occur on any OS where modularity is not in place, tiered security is not in place, or users run unknown code (run/install programs, browse the internet, etc) with root level access.
If linux had 90% market share and users ran as root they'd have the same problems as windows is now. But linux doesn't have that market share (yet) and any smart linux user won't browse the net as root. The problem is that you can't do that with windows because their user management sucks. Their "run program as" function is a joke and can't seem to handle multiple program threads, so you have to run windows as root/admin to get any real work done anyways. This really is a windows problem.
ps I dont' know anything about macs... - jckosnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i'm far from knowing a lot about computers, and even i have known about keyloggers for a long f'ing time. did people digg this ironically or something?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so uhhh....why is keylogging a threat? it's a technical threat so it's more or less EASILY overcome rather the threat users will always pose. retarded article.
- bluekangaroo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keylogger programs have been around for a long while. Stories pop up on them on the news now and then. Right now there seems to be a flurry of news stories in the general media about them. Just a guess, but i think that keyloggers may be older than phishing.
Just because its an old technique though, doesn't mean its not dangerous. The virus and ad-ware detection program makers really need to find better detection techniques. - miaow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont understand why protection from keylogging and password cracking and trojans havent been the priorities in general computing security for years, rather than damage by viruses and worms or company spyware (which mostly shouldnt have happened anyhow, for instance windows previous default settings).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This story is about completely old news, "Wow! hackers use key loggers? Who would ever know that???" I mean seriously, post a story on some new way hackers found to retrieve data off of your system, not one way we've known about for more than a year.

but my point is that it is not passe' .... just because whoever wrote the description said that, does not make it true. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""keyloggers/keystroke recorders are nothing new. Sucks to use Windows..."

- n3tw0rk@dm!n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keyloggers have been around since the dawn of computers. I have no idea how this got to the front page. Reported LAME.
- Sundae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I think a more accurate title for this story would be "Some Cyberthieves Use Keyloggers".
- rubicante, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Passe? Come on - I remember phishing on AOL as T0S_ADVIS0R in '92. It's just something for kids to do.
LAME. - jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another great reason to use anything other than windows.
- EsotericBoredom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to agree with the sentiment this artice is lame. Its a heads up for people that use thier computer to view e-mail and pictures of thier kids (even though i have yet to met anyone that fits that description) but those people arent on digg. If they ever wandered on digg all the big words would scare them away anyway.
Just as a counterpoint keyloggers can be your friend. An aquaintance of mine was able to prove that his wife was unfatithful to him by installing a keylogger on his computer. Saved him a 120k divorce setllement.
as much as i hate to agree withg NRA, its not that tool thats dangerous but the intent of the user, or some such nonsense. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wait this is NEWs? Uh...

Yeah. Keyloggers were how they figured what Nedry was up to in Jurassic Park. - EsotericBoredom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to agree with the sentiment this article is lame. - DiggAJK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wait... how did this get on the front page? It's just an article about keyloggers.... pretty sure we've all heard of those before.
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wtf isn't this just an outdated articles about keyloggers?
I think by 2013 there will be a huge network of computers. We can call it ARPAnet - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0
