- Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Can't someone just ship out free porn instead of viruses just ONCE?
- cyberfelon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Here's a play-by-play of what will happen:
1) Windows virus attacks attachment-executing dumbasses worldwide
2) Experienced Windows users remain unaffected
3) Linux/Apple fanboys assume that even experienced Windows users are attachment-executing dumbasses and begin flaming everyone in sight
4) Experienced Windows users are once again convinced that other operating systems are for elitists who apparently can't run basic security software - dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@cyphase
"Then stop doing what you're doing. :)
If you mean that you do stuff that you can't do in Linux.. stuff like what? I'm not being rhetorical, I really want to know what you mean."
well off the top of my head?
using 3dsmax for game development
using premiere pro (with windows only plugins)
developing .asp/.net in a "real" .asp/.net environment (and of course php, but thats fine on linux)
using sling media box
realviz applications (for matchmoving, stitching, and "retiming")
directX sdk
using mocap applications (and soon hardware)
soon to be using a 3d scanner (for 3dsmax)
lego mindstorm (k this is just for fun, but as far as I know still cant run on linux)
authoring .TS files and outputting to a dvhs deck via firewire
using macromedia apps for some web design/dev
of course photoshop (and gimp while impressive, its not the standard, so I would never trade photoshop for it)
using newsleecher (yes you can get newsreaders for linux, but they suck ass compared to newsleecher...supersearch anyone?)
flash2advance (as far as I know all the major gba/ds flash cards dont work with Linux)
and dude honestly? I could go on and on and on and on.
But again, even though you dont get any where near the amount of option for hardware/software with linux, I still love it as a server.
But dont kid yourself for a second that it can compete with the windows in terms of options. Its not even in the same league.
And being that I know how to use my computer I am not worried at all about this or any other virus. - Chris_F, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who opens porn emails? Really.
- phlll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Only the true morons believe free porn comes through email.
That's why the rest of us just wait for the Victoria's Secret catalog. - cyberfelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@0troy
I only use Outlook at work, for obvious reasons. At home I use Opera's built-in mail client mostly because it's convenient, but also for security reasons.
The point I'm trying to make is that Linux and OSX are fine choices if that's what suits you, but Windows is also a fine OS. It's all about knowing how to safely use your OS, which 99% of regular Digg users know how to do. Problems like this virus are usually spread because of the stupidity of the end user (whether that be blatant stupidity, or stupidity in the form of inadequate security), and that stupidity will remain no matter what OS is running on their machine. The type of person that clicks on a flashing "WARNING: YOUR COMPUTER MIGHT BE INFECTED" pop-up won't be saved by Linux. - digitaldivider, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"

@cyberfelon:
you're my hero. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh noes! I'm running Windows! All my stuff is going to get deleted!
I've never gotten a virus in all the years I've used Windows. - ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ CarlosReyes
"also if you want extra protection, just put all your stuff on a .iso file, never saw .iso on the list of file extensions prone to the virus"
for extra protection couldn't you just use a rubber? - adizzy615, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am getting tired of people saying they would never get affected by viruses because they don't run as root.
1) There exists known elevation of privileges bugs for windows, linux and os x. If a virus writer wants to run as roots, he will find a way.
2) When a virus is not running as root it can still do damage, like delete all your files. Coincidentally that is what this virus does.
3) A virus writer can always go the social engineering route. Like popping a dialog or command prompt asking for the administrator password and there will be some unaware users who will gladly try to help the virus writer achieve his goal.
Not running as root helps a lot. But its just one wall of security, not the some uber wall that will stop all attackers
Thanks that's all. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Just don't open any emails from people that you don't know, it's not that hard, especially with those titles."
What about the people you do know who have a virus that sends itself to all of their contacts (including you)? - GaijinTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Leo Laporte has been telling everyone this for years now.
Never open email attachments. Period.
If it's important, someone will send it to you another way. - CarlosReyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OOOOOH look, free porno from *****@pron0.net, wonder what that nifty wewontdoanythingbad.exe will do? if your stupid enough to do that, chances are 1) you dont even have half of the file types the virus overwrites. 2) you DESERVE to get a good burst of reality that your computer is not a solid brick wall against attacks. Go and learn a bit about pooters...
the dual-booter, planning on a triple-boot, thatd be nice... - beezn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 NYXEM FILE TARGETS

- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hehe such a joke. If you get a virus today on a windows machine you should throw your computer out the window.
As for the linux heads. I'm sure my calculator wont get a virus either......doesnt mean I am going to ditch the wealth of options I get on windows for a half ass linux distro. (please note I do have a nice lil linux based server.....but as a desktop? no f'n way, I do waaaaaaaaay too much to limit myself. I will risk the fantasy virii that may infect my computer over limited options) - FrostyFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're not supposed to open the "virus.exe" attachment from email in your spam folder.
- mwallace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not my Oracle files, please, no.
- crazaalex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hope this gets on my teacher[s] computers!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You were all n00bs once. There will always be n00bs. You aren't born Network Administrator. I mean, relax, guys... MOST of you can't even use correct spelling and grammar.
- andrewr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Crap all my papers for school will be gone
- ender52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if you're not running a virus scanner, you deserve to have all your documents erased. Then maybe you'll learn.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh nooooezzzzzzzzzz!

- MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yay for Linux and Mac users, they're not into porn!
- Cyphase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sure :)
- LatvianHedgehog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh noes ! photoshop ! oh wait ... i don't have one.
- jpatch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yet ANOTHER reason why I moved to OpenOffice...
And why I prefer Linux, for that matter! - mattv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1whew good thing you mac and linux users are here to remind us, ONCE AGAIN, of what kind of computer you use BECAUSE THAT TOTALLY AFFECTS ME YEAH THANKS. i had almost forgot from five seconds ago on the previous thread where you said the exact same things over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.
- raptorGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You mean there's no porn afterall? Damn it...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0im happy with gentoo...
besides, its only all of our parents' and friends' computers which will be infected...
if more than 3% of digg's users are infected, then shame on digg...
im sure most of us are intelligent enough not to open all that ***** ;)
yay digg ! - logofpi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i will just set my clock back a few years and i will be fine until i get a mac"
my clock is set back to the dawn of WIN95. Oh yes my friends, no virus is gonna get me now. Its all about the onboard clock isnt it? It couldnt possibly detect time through the net. no
my clock is set back to the dawn of WIN98. Im not too worried because soon i'll have a MBP - Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im glad that I know how to use windows and the internet.
- RMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gotta love virus's like this. I'm gonna write one and release it on my school network. =D

Well said, I have been a Windows user for a lonnggg time(, but I also use Macs/ Linux boxes). Viruses have never been a problem for me. You just have to know what you're doing. And if you don't we all know what happens (You get yourself a Mac and are impressed by it and fall in love with every single Apple product) - FlyingLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yay linux...
- timko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was reading the first line and thought it said "On FEB 3 the Nyxem virus is set to delete World" !!!
O SHI... - noodhoog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good grief. I never knew Digg was so full of utter *****.
To paraphrase about 90% of the comments so far:
"ROFLLOLMAOFLOL! I'M too ELEEET to get VAPED by theez MAD VIRUSIS! HA! HA! Only the NOOOOBS will get hit by them, hahaha stupid NOOBS watch the NOOBS lose all their data ha ha!!! I wont loose my data bcuz I AM ELEEET!!!!"
I hope you're as "leet" at car maintenence as you are with your computer, because next time you take your car in for a service, the mechanic might just be laughing behind your back about what a clueless n00b you are, and decide to rip you off for being such a dimwit. And if not your car, then something else.
Granted, yes, anybody who opens "freeporn.exe" from an email promising free porn probably deserves to get their fingers burnt, but the overwhelming attitude on here so far of laughing at the dumbass n00bs (where have I heard that before? Oh yeah. Crowds of little teenage "gawths" laughing at the "mundanes") is just the most cringingly childish thing I've seen in a very long time. - 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@cyberfelon
Your point is well taken. However, windows users are encouraged to use admin. Linux users are not. Were an unintelligent linux user to click on something foolish, (and be running as the user the installer made them create) there would be significantly less impact than if a windows user running admin were to do the same.
Those always remind me of that popup that says, Is your credit card stolen??? check for free! And has a spot to put in your CC info... - I922sParkCir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In away this is good. It may push MS to make a more secure OS. It may push people to Linux, and push them to make a more idiot friendly OS. It may push people to Mac, an already idiot friendly OS. Temporary pain for inevitable good.
I use all three, but I don't to often go in to my Windows partition. Ehh if anything happens, my back-ups will save me. - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well *****, guess I'm regretting switching over to OpenOffice.org and GIMP right about now . . . .
- CarlosReyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a nifty program to have is AD-aware PRO special edition (why SE i dont know, i havent seen a non-se version) but one of the features is Ad-Watch, which [when run] prevents the execution of .exe files on webpages, not sure about attachments though... also, if you read this, you know your not stupid enough to get the virus.
- CarlosReyes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0also if you want extra protection, just put all your stuff on a .iso file, never saw .iso on the list of file extensions prone to the virus
- dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0last night my brother asked me why linux is better than windows, i happened to be really high, and couldnt really answer. im high right now, and wont be able to answer, but i atleast can show him this.
- pingviini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First, maybe its just me, but when I think of free porn, I would associate that with some type of video or image file extension. But, I guess that's besides the point.
Now what would be scary, is a virus that takes your in box and replies to every message you have. How would you warn your parents, grandparents, coworkers about that. Not saying anyone should do that. But hypothetically, what security measure would you use against that?
And as a Linux guy, I know most people just aren't cut out for Linux. I've actually got my 2 little brothers (3rd and 4th grade) using Linux now, but people that already know windows and don't want to relearn, aren't going to be any better at using Linux. - 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Those always remind me of that popup that says, Is your credit card stolen??? check for free! And has a spot to put in your CC info..."
Darn lack of editing. This is in refrence to those banners that say "Is your computer infected?" - ericesque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ Otroy "windows users are encouraged to use admin"
uh... no they're not. Nobody encourages windows users to use their admin account. People are simply uninformed. Any security expert will tell you to use a restricted account as your primary account. Granted, by default your account will be set up as admin, but that may have to do with the fact that it is easier for the uninformed masses to automatically have the admin rights instead of explaining why they have to switch accounts just to install a program. It's a usability thing. You linux folks wouldn't be as concerned with that. (j/k, I'm somewhat a linux guy myself but not a windows basher by any means)
@ matt0baba
"people smarten up and get a mac like some of us ! then ( if u have no life) when u open a porn site u dont have to worry about any key-loggers, viruses or maul-ware ..lolz"
read: MACs are for Porn! - alexmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One word on advice: kepp your computer off(Nooo...The horror.... on Feb. 3rd. As far as I can tell, the virus will only execute when the computer is running. Also, use a web scanner. Much safer if you REALLY think you have the virus.Again: Computers off the 3rd of each month if infected. Oh ya and I love those banners...LOL NOT...damn pop-ups
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i am a little scared, because if they find a way to attatch it to my movies from bit torrent or some of the songs i DL of limwire, i could have a problem, well ill just DL every thing feb 2 and just wait for the update on at least one of my virus progz and ill stick with what ive got for then, i needed an excuse to play more WoW
- Overdose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why did he say photoshop? photoshop is not apart of office.
