- InsideLine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It's good that someone's doing something. Die, spammers!
- ih8apple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wow, what a great idea!

- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The term has been in use for decades, it's a bit late to start complaining. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honeypot_%28espionage%29
www.exactwatches.net - geodescent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In other news, Digg gets slower
- fak3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a great project, and patangay is right, a WP plugin feeding them the output from an Askemet table would be sweet. Do they have an API that you can sub to?
- zenprowler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the financial company i work for uses ip info from project honeypot to block spammers opening accounts - doesn't stop them, i know - but makes their life just a little harder
- punkisnotdead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I swear to god, I must get at least 80 rolex spam comments per day to my blog. Akismet sections them off, but they are still annoying. Between these guys and the scraper sites stealing all my content, the web is really losing its lustre.
- drbogo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why did you warn them?
- zenprowler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmmm link dont work try goin to their site click data - lookup ips
me and my crap html! - dotlizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1honey pot, eh? funny, one of my fantasies involving spamment-bot creators involves covering them with honey and staking them out nekkid next to an anthill.
small world. or something. - interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Most of these sites are part of a botnet anyway... more being added every day, and old computers being cleaned up eventually, can they really be tracked that closely?
http://www.lookrichforless.com/ - zenprowler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not cynical - no. there is a subscription to be paid but there is also a free service for ip look up at
http://projecthoneypot.org/search_ip.php
to be honest though you can get good results searching with the ip in google groups.
we have managed to at least piss off one bunch of spammers who are currently threatening to sue. lol - pokka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1crap, double post
- pokka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This project (in its current implementation) will do nothing to detect or stop spammers. All they are doing is setting up fake comment forms/blog installations, and aggregating the IP addresses used to spam/hack.
The obvious problem with this approach is that spammers almost never use their real IP address. They either use a proxy server, or a trojan-infected zombie machine to do their work. So this project will end up "shaming" a bunch of people who did nothing wrong (other than not knowing how to keep their computer secure).
The only way to truly stop these spammers would be to
a) set up a bunch of honeypot *machines* (not websites) which would be "infected", and monitor their outside network traffic to see what hosts are connecting to them directly, and
b) infiltrate the irc networks that they hide behind when issuing spam commands.
All of this is covered pretty well on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botnet - aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you need more information, you can check it out at www.clickonmelikethemoronyouare.com .
- patangay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0You guys need to make a WordPress plugin.
- pwnage24, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0couldnt they have picked another name for it....project honey pot implies something else that has to do with a certain part of a womans anatomy
