- CoryTrevor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Hell yes we would be screwed. This administration couldn't even manage a hurricane cleanup. Could you imagine if something really large scale was to hit us.
- MrGeneric, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10China has already attacked NATO countries, there have been large scale, military style, hacking attacks coming out of Guandong for a while now, that is old news. http://www.google.com/search?&q=Guangdong hacking
As for all out war, they don't control the high ground, the international links, so they can have the plug pulled on them very easily. - walugi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10America probaby has more international enemies that china has, a sign of the times no?
- bentman78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9perhaps...but China has more domestic enemies than all NATO countries combined.
- bentman78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This comes as no surprise. I work for an agency in DC that doesn't have anything to do with Security, Defense or anything like that. We do scientific research. Our counterparts in China (they have a similar agency, even named the same thing) constantly attack and probe us. We've traced the I.Ps back to their subnet.
It's amazing to me that tow organizations in two countries with the same name can have such a different mission. ours is for bettering society and they are constantly trying to penetrate our network.... - Sippi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5aqualdr,
I live in Mississippi and we were hit just as hard as N.O. by Katrina. The government let everyone down, not just the poor. The fact is most of the people that are saying Bush forgot about them are so dependent on the government that they complain if someone isn't their to wipe their butt for them.
You never hear about the vast majority of people who were affected by the hurricanes because they are to busy working to support themselves and their families. So before you start pointing fingers at Bush for forgetting about the poor black, I want you to remember one thing. They're still people from the middle class who did vote for him who still live in tents along the Mississippi coast. They just have better things to do than just sit around and complain about how the government forgot about them. - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7We must increase the Pentagon's tiny budget so they deal with these war loving Chinese.
- deut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's true actually. There is no chance of China and US ever being at war. They each rely on each other too much.
China supplies the US cheap goods keeping your prices down, the USA borrows dollars back from China to finance it's federal debt. - thejakester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4sounds like something out of ghost in the shell
- satellite360, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Count up the number of wars China has been involved in the the past 30 years and then count the number of wars the US has been involved in and you might want to revise that statement.
- aqualdr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I worked at a Shelter during Hurricane Katrina/Rita. Our government didn't care about them for one simple reason. They are poor. They don't contribute to the bush/neo con reelection committee. All the rich people in New Orleans I promise you are being well taken care of. ***** the poor people. The fact that most of them are black, here in the state of Louisiana is a double whammy. I hate to say it but it is the truth.
- chicksdigme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What are the Chinese going to do with info from the US? Are they going to find out that Iraq has WMD as well?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12"China is developing the ability to launch pre-emptive attacks against enemy computer networks in a crisis."
The people of China must be relieved. Next time an earthquake, tsunami, or economic depression hits, they can rest assured that America's windows PCs will bite the dust. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Those idiots keep portscanning me because they think I am some kind of corporate network. Can't they tell that after 10,000 failed attempts, they can't get through my firewall?
- Tijmen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We better train some Col. Burtons then. He knows what to do with those Chinese hackers.
- returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2God, I hope this is sarcasm. On digg you can never tell.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Phone Losers of America????
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oddly enough, the Xinhua News Network referenced in the article (a state-run Chinese CNN) is inaccessible from US military computers. The US government is taking steps (small and inadequate steps IMHO, but steps nonetheless) to prepare for this possibility. Bear in mind that the majority of the internet is under direct US control, however.
- iworms, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Lenovo does the job.
- uraligoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Tom Clancy should sue China for stealing the plot from Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
- Nitro2985, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, they can't route their traffic through an IP address outside of china. Noooooo...
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2trollenlord
So your are saying that the rest of the world would be thankful if we unplugged ICANN? Wouldn't the internet self destruct or something? - chemicalscum, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Yeah but who manufactures the hardware these American companies are selling... the Chinese.
- Killfile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dealing with the Chinese hacker threat is painfully easy. Use airpower to take out any gattling cannons or other detector units while distracting the main force with a small infantry and armored assault -- then run three or four pathfinders in. The hackers go down very easily.
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OBKenobi,
You see, you need to read. The U.S. is *one* country, what are the other two things you listed? - bentman78, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4For every Chinese attempt on our DoD or other government networks, that we catch, think of what we have done to them.
Sure they've broken in a few times, I'd suspect we have too, and we're better because we haven't been caught. If you think China is this all ominpotent IT super juggernaut that can hack anything, you certainly haven't met some of the folks I have met here than can exploit your computer in matter of seconds. Most DoD installation conduct pen testing annually and try to cover up holes as they see them. The Chinese...not so much. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
It's about time the US got real, stopped relying on nothing more than a massive budget, and got some know how.
In other words, stopped using Windows. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They want all that personal info that Bush has been collecting with the help of AT&T.
- andyengle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@CoryTrevor: You're totally wrong. The city and state governments in New Orleans and Louisiana, respectively, completely had no clue how to respond to this hurricane. They left their people on their own, to fend for themselves, and the whole situation ended up being a complete mess. Where was "School Bus Nagin" when it was time to get out of town? He wasn't using a whole lot of EMPTY school buses that could have been used, rather he was on the air, on a New Orleans radio station, cursing the federal government for not getting him Greyhound buses to get his citizens out of town. How is this effective leadership? He and the city government could have made a MUCH better effort to get the good people of New Orleans out of there. They failed to do so. Then they blamed the federal government for not helping. When Gen. Honore (the man who said "Don't get stuck on stupid!") showed up and took over, things started getting better.
Now, to Mayor Nagin's credit, he did give a big thank you to President Bush after he (Nagin) was re-elected recently. Good for him to do.
@aqualdr: Your comments are totally baseless. Read what I just wrote to your buddy CoryTrevor had to say. It's not the federal government's job to come in and rescue everybody when the local and state governments could not get the hint that they needed to scram. When our miliary showed up (yes, the same military that all you libs hate), the situation quickly improved. I don't know how you can honestly say that our government didn't come because they are poor/black/democrat. That's crap. They didn't come because it wasn't their job to do so; they came because the locals couldn't do the job right in the first place.
But all this is beside the point: China is building itself up to be a mighty war machine which ought to be feared. Meanwhile, our Senators and the bulk of the Democrat party are doing all they can to undermine our fine military, to blame America for all the world's problems, and to weaken America. They're doing all this in a twisted effort to regain power, and it's sick and pathetic. China isn't messing around. - tylerman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2/ignore "china's ip here"
:-P Jokes - msaleem, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Perhaps the language is confusing you. That means that if the two countries are locked in a crisis (read war) China can pre-emtively attack the other country's IT infrastructure. Not that when another country is in a crisis, enter China and make things worse for them.
- aqualdr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2When you say finance the federal debt you mean Pay for our war in Iraq and take up the slack the corporations(The tax cuts) and dead rich people(estate/death tax) used to pay for?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But my technique is the best!
- RBOnline, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4It's well known that China is very adept at using and manipulating technology. They've infiltrated US Military netowrks countless times. It's about time the US got real, stopped relying on nothing more than a massive budget, and got some know how.
- bentman78, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4take a look in the datacenters around the world. Look at the hardware in those datacenters. Where does it come from? Chance are it's Cisco, HP, IBM, Dell, Juniper.....the list goes on. Those companies are American...regardless of what anti-americans think, the internet is built largely on US goods. I guess we aren't really giving it away, most countries pay good money to US firms to get connected...it helps out our economy...keep the dollars rolling in fellas.
- bentman78, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4nice defeatist strategy sergioc...hope I never have to rely on you for any sort of defense/security.
- d3d3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no matter what we do,we Chinese just want peace&freedom,no invasion,no war.Maybe we should know each other better before any quarrel.
- Joe_rigby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@andyengle
You know, you say things in such a righteous tone to be such a slanderer .. We're talking about a president who has other people write his speeches, and he has time to go over them, and he still manages to say something stupid.
Did you stop to think about George Bush's pal from FEMA who was good for getting horses to *****, and that's about it? FEMA dropped the ball biggest of all.
"Meanwhile, our Senators and the bulk of the Democrat party are doing all they can to undermine our fine military ..."
Yea, everybody that you don't like is in on this massive plot to hurt the military. We're under the leadership of a man who is "Pro-life" and won't give 2 cents for stem cell research, but it's fine that thousands of America's finest young men and women are going to die in an unjustifiable war. Not to mention the innocents that die in its wake. We're "bringing freedom to the people of Iraq" because we didn't find WMDs, even though Rumsfeld said he KNEW the region where they are.
Meanwhile, China is like, "WTF?" with grandiose visions of being the new world superpower, but if they did anything to us, what the hell are we going to do? We don't have the capability with our whole ***** military in the middle east on a fools errand.
There is a time for war and a time for diplomacy. I support our troops, but not the man who sends them to their death. - returnofmalv, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Well the US has displayed the capacity to invade another country preemptively without reason. This is China's way of making sure that doesn't happen to them as well.
Frankly I think they have good reason to be worried. I'd wager about 9/10 US news reports on China are demonizing and critical of their government and way of life. Whether it be censorship, human rights violations, copyright violations, or our trade deficit with them, most reports seem to be fairly negative. Nevermind the tremendous economic progress and the increased quality of life for them over the past few years.
Frankly, I can't help but feel that the US is psyching itself up for a cold war with China. From what I gather, most Americans feel threatened. Our dependency on them far exceeds their dependency on us. - walugi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I've never really understood this US control over the internet thing. Aren't there more users of the internet in countries like Russia, China, India now where there high speed accessibility in most cities are alarmingly high and cheap?
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Please make sure you know what you are taking about before you post.

Internet Users
Asia: 364,270,713
EU: 291,600,898
US: 227,303,680 - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lenovo? Who told IBM to sell to them?
IBM: Nazi scientists, now Chinese Communists. - behemothaur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I bet the US equivalent taskforces (or whatever they are called) are positively quaking in their boots.
Also I think everyone should stop worrying - I saw Han Solo install an access list on a Cisco (could have been Huawei, hard to tell) router today, in seconds, to effectively stop a "hacker" using Asian source addresses attempting to crack into a bank. The US is in good hands...
Also questioning the intentions of the Chinese takes us all away from Brangelina & Shiloh - I mean fair's fair... - mushimonster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Personally I have no problems with the individual peoples of China. Some of the most beautiful women in the world are Chinese. The Chinese invented paper, The Chinese make great food. They have added so much to our world, BUT this article proves that the Communist Regime needs to be confronted. The thought of using our free internet as a weapon is horrifying. The facists hurting the people of China have no respect for freedom and would love to block everyone behind their routers. I only pray that the United States, United Kingdom, and others protect our Internet. I would hate to login and see a evil red flag controlling Digg and other sites because Communist facists have declared war on the net.
- VijchtiDoodah, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Pre-emptive strike? Wouldn't that mean that they've already infected our computers with some sort of virus or something turning us into one giant botnet that they can shut down at will? At least, I don't see any other way they could do it.
- Lodarage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That's not news IMHO.
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Big deal, the US has well-defined warfare strategies in this arena as well....
- dasoulseeker, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Lol, talking about war loving...
- lnxaddct, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Well the U.S. does still have the most internet users by a good margin. Also something like 90% to 95% of websites visited are American sites, even if the visitor if foreign. If America gets knocked off the net, say good bye to every major search engine, online retailer, wikipedia, slashdot, digg, and just about everything that entices the average person to use it.
- veloscaper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4we created and payed for it. be happy we share. others certainly would not.
