- nsummy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52Yah why didn't you just post the original link, instead of the blog spam?
- capiCrimm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Everyone Quiet. No one mention that "square thingy" or you'll ruin it...
- arrenlex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23*****. http://www.china.org.cn/ -- china's government website -- shows as blocked. There's no way.
- cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21I'm actually living in China right now, and this isn't all that accurate. This thing says that several torrent sites like thepiratebay is blocked, but they're not...
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20So cool! Ever since this story made it to the front page on digg China started blocking every single website in the world...
Or wait, maybe their crappy server in china went down and just shows that every website I try is "blocked". - eesser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12google.com is absolutely not blocked.
Living in Shanghai for the last year, the internet access back to US websites has certainly been a huge frustration. But, it should be noted that the "blocking" process here is much MUCH more sophisticated than just blocking by IP, or even really blocking at all. Sites can be working fine one day (minute, hour) and not working the next.
There are in-fact some sites that are totally restrictred (such as wikipedia), but MOST sites (like news.google.com) are just semi-crippled. What they do, for example, with news.google.com, is allow you to see the front page. But when you click on a link, you'll notice that each link first goes through a redirector (on google's site). Generally they cripple that (though some days it works fine), so when they see that url, they inject a bunch of reset packets into the TCP/IP stream, and you get a "lost network connection" error. Safari even tells you to report it as a bug! Depending on the web server, you get all kinds of weird behaviors. The most common is the "lost network connection", but it's also common to get "the server stopped responding". Sometimes you can get "some" or "part" of a site to come through by constantly clicking refresh, and hoping that the server will ignore (survive) the reset-packet-storm long enough to feed you some data.
It's painful, and often feels very random. My wife's favorite SCRAPBOOKING website was suffering from this problem a few weeks ago (though now it's fine again). - sfpfc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14greatfirewallofchina.org isn't blocked yet
- Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Digg wasn't blocked when I tried. Perhaps this is fake...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11EDIT** any site not in the top 100,000 on alexa is blocked
- motbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I chose five random, non-famous websites that had no reason to be blocked... and they were all blocked. I'm not sure how this site works but the results seemed kind of dodgy.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Simple
because they dont want a rebellion
wikipedia is full of a crap load of information that could prove harmful
since it has information about democracy and other stuff that scares the government in china - cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9never heard of it but I clicked on your link (i'm in china right now), it's definitely not blocked
- kevxross, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm not blocked...
I'll have to try harder. - guillermox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Yes google is blocked.
What would be allowed though is the google-censored "www.google.cn"
Google "did an evil" but since it was for $$$, it's OK. - tallonx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9lol... my website is blocked.... :P that's pretty funny. Must be all my radical thoughts and propaganda.
- jamapi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Its because China uses google.cn, the 'censored' google version. That one is not blocked.
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -0/+6China doesn't like spinningGuitar.gif
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Marvel.com is blocked? Don't they like Captain America ?
- Coopjust, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@kalleanka
"Lol, I love how everyone in the posts below seems to think their blogs are so important that the Chinese government blocked their sites. Hey guys, your blogs are not _that_ important. :)"
My other domain on the same web server shows up as accessible, multiple times. Only one of them is blocked. - cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6after trying a few more, i'll confirm that it's fake, buried as inaccurate
- xbob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i tried digg and its blocked, im thinking it might be fake
- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's weird, I thought China "did an evil" and Google did a "smart" so that Chinese people could at least get some search results, even telling them "hey dude, China is making us filter these results."
What would be the point in Google NOT offering this service? Either way chinese people will know that China is interfering with them getting all the results they want from Google, but in this way they can at least use the service and know for certain when China is blocking the results on purpose, and when it's just a network issue. - joshua5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6damnit! users who submit stories through blog gateways should be immediately banned
- ropers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe that the page is currently returning false positives (for blocking).
Ie. I believe the test is currently falsely claiming that a lot of sites are blocked when they really aren't. The reason I believe that is that I tested my own website ropersonline dot com a number of times and sometimes it said mu URL was available but most of times it said that that very same URL was blocked.
I then tested Google China ( http://www.google.cn/ ). It said the page was blocked. It is well documented by the media that Google complied with Chinese censorship requests and Alexa says ( http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?cc=CN&ts_mode=country&lang=none ) that google.cn is the 14th most popular site in China. I believe that it's likely that the slashdot effect is currently overwhelming the test site and so the test is not working properly. If you really run a website and are not just a curious onlooker, bookmark the test site and go back to in in a few days when traffic has died down. You'll probably get better results then. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Them and the rest of the world.
- zizzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The site says this:
"This version, 1.0, may report sites as being "blocked", while there are only technical reasons for their unavailability." - Prysorra, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Weird to see Instapundit at the first listing when I clicked that link.
Is he THAT dangerous to China? - stealth45, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Bastards.. they blocked xxxporn.com
- eesser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3absolutely, so far. A few more articles like this hitting the front page . . . and we'll see. I live in Shanghai. If/when digg.com gets blocked, I'm moving back to the US. :)
- g2g079, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They can see my site. They must like the Bush bashing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you think this link is blocked
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiananmen_Square_protests_of_1989 - Riotblade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I know this site is fake. I was in China recently and was able to access many sites they say are blocked.
- osc1882, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Awesome. Now I have a way to test a site before I send a link to Chinese friend.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This site is complete bollocks. Marked inaccurate.
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11Lol, I love how everyone in the posts below seems to think their blogs are so important that the Chinese government blocked their sites. Hey guys, your blogs are not _that_ important. :)
- harshbarj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4he's just trying to get traffic to his blog, A thing many here on digg do and one I wish would stop. Just post to the article in question and link to your blog when you have a real story. Linking to your blog that just links to the story is just dumb.
- kayla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This site *looks* cool but it's not completely accurate.
- Vitriol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My site worked, which clearly means China is full of taste.
- lukehh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3no, even says google.cn is blocked
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/6408/picture1ba4.png
useless (or beta I guess)
(ahh! mikeazorin jsut beat me to it......down I go.... - ChinaRye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This thing is so fake. I am in Beijing right now and rarely have a problem getting to most websites. On the rare occasion that I find a site that is blocked, I go through a proxy just like most people do here. The great firewall is a joke because it is so easy to get around and everyone here knows this. This is just another example of someone trying to show how big and evil China is. I absolutely hate censorship, but after living here for four years, it is not as bad as most people make it out to be.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It says http://google.cn is blocked. I think it's broken.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3whats interesting is that the domain itself for where I work is not blocked, but the host A record is... in other words.. www.mycompanyiworkat.com is blocked but just mycompanyiworkat.com is not.
tried it twice to verify. Little discrepancy there.. get your act together china. How do you expect to rule this century like I have been reading if your ***** is all messed up.. figuratively. - cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2everything eesser just said is absolutely true, I'm living in china too and that's the frustration I have. the only two sites that I ever use that are completely blocked are wikipedia.org and x.wordpress.com blogs, and that's it, but theres tons of sites that are just kinda messed up and "partially blocked." it sounds stupid, but that's really what happens
- secureslash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that greatfirewall doest nt seems working accurately...
- idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4www.yourmom.com works fine.
- eesser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2google.com is absolutely not blocked. One of the most reliable sites from here (Shanghai). Many of their tools are blocked - such as translate (certain URLs, e.g. the hack to translate from english to english to use the translate function as a free proxy), and news.google.com is crippled (see post above). Google.com works fine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2blogspot, and consequently my music blog, is blocked. how lame.
- method77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2*****. Shows my site is blocked although I have many visitors from China
