service fee,
handing charge,
convenience fee...
So when banks, service providers, and big business skim from my pocket it's legitimate. But if you don't provide a service-like name with it - as if you were doing me a favor, THEN it's criminal. Like when a bank charges you an overdraft fee of $33 because you went into overdraft for half a day by $1.25, and their only justification is, "All the other banks do it so we do too."
Then I suppose the criminals skimming bank cards should just label it as a "Special not robbing you at gunpoint and punching you in the face fee."
Other than that, I don't much see the distinction. - inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4I'm clearly in the wrong business.
- Velnich, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3In a nutshell?
It lets people make a copy of your bank card and record your pin number while you use an ABM. They then go back with their copy of your card and use your pin to empty your bank account (or take as much money as they can out of your account). - rodrigo74, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3No.
- falser, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2"Recently, four Romulans living in Florida have been charged for stealing $1.8 million... "
Whoa did I read that correctly? - jaredh999, on 05/14/2009, -0/+2Well, chit... Now I need to get theft protection to use my own bank's ATM!
- scubachef11, on 05/14/2009, -1/+3So... how does it work?
- dvsbastard, on 05/14/2009, -2/+3In most cases. skimming still requires physical observation of your PIN so always remember to shield the keypad properly when entering your PIN...
- Velnich, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1It's a problem here in Toronto too though I don't know how large of a problem compared to NY. Some of these skimming devices are very cleverly made and are not easy to see sometimes even when you know what to look for. There will always be a camera to catch your pin code and a device over the card reader to scan your card as you put it in or take it out of the ATM.
Pay attention and if the ATM looks odd in any way, just find another machine to use. Don't touch the pieces. - maz2331, on 05/14/2009, -2/+2$2M in NYC is a drop in the proverbial bucket.
BUT...
If these people are ever identified, proven to have committed the crime beyond any doubt (not "reasonable doubt", but actual hard proof) then we have to:
Hang them, draw them, and quarter them.
Then find a banker who did the same to everyone, and do the same. - offon, on 05/13/2009, -3/+1Somebody must do something against them, soon they will be more and more, and ME at risk.
