- brodimus, on 07/16/2009, -0/+29Who is this AL, and why shouldn't he fight terrorism?
- spritom, on 07/16/2009, -1/+18Have we learned nothing from James Cameron and the Wachowski brothers?
- trav3135, on 07/16/2009, -0/+12Read this as Al and immediately thought of Al Gore fighting terrorism.
- HentaiJeff, on 07/16/2009, -0/+10And here come the skynet jokes.
- EndAntiSemitism, on 07/16/2009, -6/+14Buried for being a truther.
By the way:

(the link truthers don't want you to click)
^^^ All the anti-scientific truther crap debunked. - marm0lade, on 07/16/2009, -1/+8jet fuel doesn't need to melt steel. steel looses 50% of its strength at 60% melting temperature (2750 F, 60% = 1650 F). shhhh, don't tell the truthers!
- spritom, on 07/16/2009, -0/+7So Skynet, the Matrix, and WOPR walk into a bar...
- EndAntiSemitism, on 07/16/2009, -1/+8The truthers aren't using "science". That's the whole point. All their little misleading ***** (etc, "jet fuel doesn't burn hot enough to melt steel so therefore inside job!") is the kind of stuff it disproves.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -1/+7Yes its our fault that we live in a free country, and aren't subject to the ***** rules that their country imposes upon them.
- chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5**Eagle Eye/Matrix/Terminator Reference**
Am I right? - rjshatz, on 07/16/2009, -0/+4It's like sicking snakes to catch rats. Pretty soon we'll have to bring in mongoose.
...Or is it mongeese? - Willtheway, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3haha, just give us 10 years
- askantik, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3... Or play Fallout 3.
- YME1280, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3No but the tee-onetowsend can!
- HopeForTomorrow, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3And we shall call it "Skynet"
- litsgt, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3test it on the middle east, then bring it home to monitor us, just like UAVs
- Metasquares, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3"it's not that complicated"
Well, that settles the matter then. I've worked pretty extensively in both the symbolic and statistical areas in AI as my doctoral study, and I can assure you that it's quite complicated.
To summarize the state of the field at the moment, we are still working on defining "intelligence". Meanwhile, half of the researchers have given up on strong AI and work on weak AI challenges and the other half follow the same 3 or 4 paradigms that have existed for 50 years hoping that *this time* it will suddenly, miraculously produce strong AI without any significant changes from previous approaches.
And almost no one has stopped to ask "should we really be rushing into this? Is what we're doing really a good thing?" I think the general public has probably considered this question more through exposure to sci. fi. than most AI researchers do in their work. - LilJimmyNordin, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3Mongi
- HentaiJeff, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Al Gore protects us from manbearpig everyday! Show your respect!
- lovemorgul, on 07/16/2009, -2/+4fighting terrorism is good intelligence
- gatekeeper50, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Please review Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) is a science fiction film based upon the 1966 novel Colossus, by Dennis Feltham Jones, about a massive, eponymous American defense computer becoming sentient and deciding to assume control of the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/index.html?curid=2695 ... - EndAntiSemitism, on 07/16/2009, -2/+4How could it possibly fall at "freefall" when even in the WTC7 videos you see debris falling faster than WT7? That is impossible. You're full of it.
- Junkyarddawg, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2These systems have been in use for years. Some sources of intelligence, such as scanning international cell phone calls, generate more than 4 petabyte of data per month, that's not a data mountain it's a whole data mountain range, completely impossible for humans to sift through. So there's voice recognition software scanning for the voices of known terrorists, and other software looking for certain groups of keywords and phrases, flagging what they find for their human minders.
It'll only get worse. The UK's CCTV grid already automatically tracks all cars on the roads, and will soon use facial recognition - if it doesn't already. It really is a brave new world. - inactive, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2I'm a neuronet processor. A learning counter-terrorist computer.
- skit4king, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Lets make an AI that can do all the work that you don't want to do first.
- zephc, on 07/16/2009, -0/+2Get to da choppa!
- bermudianguy, on 07/16/2009, -1/+3if its Al Bundy then yes , yes it should.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+2Or test it on the UK like most of the other big brother equipment
- EddiePotato, on 07/16/2009, -2/+4How about "deep mistrust of consolidated power" instead of "hatred of the Bush administration". It's much easier to find fault in the latter than the former.
- CasualNinja, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1I don't like AI, he's a jerk.
- sleze, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Psychohistory can solve all these problems...
- Khast, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Yes, we can get AI to fight terrorism...
So far the results have been fairly optimistic. It thinks we are all terrorists, and has suggested to eradicate the terrorists as soon as possible for fears of a future attack. - roodammy44, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1If AI is used with the current level then it will not work at all.
There will be far more false positives than any terrorists caught and it will cause chaos.
It will ultimately be an unpopular failure.
The star trek type of AI is a distant dream. People have been saying "AI is just round the corner" for 60 years so far. It is not easy to build. - BotchaMcCoola, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Do you mean real dangerous terrorists like the 911 suicide types? Or do you mean the militias in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan that the MIC calls terrorists (like the the French underground were called by the kindhearted and misundertood Wehrmacht?) Enjoy the Recession. The war costs are having nothing to do with it. (Wink wink)
- CallumCameron, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1At first, I thought the title said "AL", I was wondering who Al was...
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1He is related to eddy, who is in the space time continuum with a sofa.
- insanebrain, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Terrorism is a human stupidity... and you know what they say. . artificial intelligence is no match for human stupidity.
- Falldog, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1It's all fun and games until it decides to kill off the president.
- cfuse, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Jack Bauer won't live forever, we have to plan for the future.
- Kyzzyxx, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1The general public
Ya ya.. me too. Evo Prog is one part, I suggest looking more holistically. But that's another convo..
Yes, I do believe that the govt WILL be lobbied to not let AI be created. Just like they lobby to try and keep them from starting up the new Large Hadron Collider cause they think it might 'destroy earth'. Pfff. Look at all the rhetoric on here. Some of this humor is covering fear. - undervalued, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Al Fraken maybe, he just had experience fighting political terrorism.
- Chairboy, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Well, went to load it and realized I don't read French.
Merde. - BotchaMcCoola, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Maybe not for you but I have lost a lot since 911. Even Dub looked pretty shocked when he saw the results. Don't be naive. Or could you be swimming in Lockheed Martin stock, you fine patriot you. Or getting direct ripoffs like some military folks I know.
- Chairboy, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Dropping it into Stanza now to check out, thanks!
- richmomz, on 07/17/2009, -2/+3We're not very fond of Obama either.
- Fleagleman, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Gore
- Kyzzyxx, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Please PLEASE let AI happen. AI is going to create and come up with answers to things that humans can't even conceive.
- Bartboy919, on 07/16/2009, -1/+2Are you kidding? Al Franken can do anything. OHH That's an i....
- BotchaMcCoola, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1Would you clarify to whom your plea is aimed? I use AI frequently. I am now doing a research project using an AI technique called Evolutionay Progamming. Do you think someone is holding me back in some way? This seems very strange to me.
