- Gizza, on 10/28/2008, -1/+55Cool, I can get in some practice for when Australia implements this.
- romerzs14, on 10/27/2008, -2/+46that's a really cool idea... a good way to help people realize the everyday freedoms in the US and other places in the world and how fortunate we are.
- LeekMibles, on 10/28/2008, -0/+35Yep, true. I've been living out here for 7 years, using proxies the whole time. Firefox has that 'gladder' plug in to make it easy to surf so I use that. Mostly for porn though, haha. For companies they mostly use their VPN's. Wait, no, it's not a VPN is it? I forgot the damn letters of it. Anywayz...
The dumb thing about the Great(fire)wall of China is that it randomly blocks ***** for no reason. Like the other day I was looking for a recipe for, none other than General Cao's chicken, and the damn American site it was on was blocked. Or yesterday when I was checkin' out some funky cool beds. Had to proxy it.
Huffington Post is blocked so every time I see an article with a video, I can read the story but not watch the video because most of these proxies don't support embedded youtube video. That's why I'm always asking for the damn link directly to the video but no one ever freakin' replies! >: ( - aussiecarlos, on 10/28/2008, -0/+32Australian Digg users, the Rudd government is trying to censor our internet. Make sure it doesn't happen. Get on board the Electronic Frontiers Australia campaign at http://www.nocleanfeed.com
- Dotcommer, on 10/28/2008, -0/+32Guess you've never been to 4chan...
- benroy, on 10/28/2008, -1/+32I'm sure that the Chine people appreciate their way of life. All the Chinese government is trying to do is protect their citizens from harmful outside influence.
Now I'll just check out what's new on www.youporn.co.....oh what the HELL?!
We have to rescue these poor people! They have no idea what true freedom is!
***** the Chinese government, Viva La Revolution! - inactive, on 10/27/2008, -1/+27From what I hear it's sort of a joke anyway. The guy I know in China says everyone there uses proxies and can get pretty much whatever they want. Can anyone confirm this?
- xqpnoted, on 10/28/2008, -0/+26Seriously?
- pipdip, on 10/28/2008, -3/+27Is anyone else a little leary of installing an unsigned, unverified Firefox add-on direct from China...?
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+20Too Bad most Americans are spending that freedom on getting more info on some slut from hollywood rather then actually using it for good.
- Tovock, on 10/28/2008, -1/+17That is just a stupid ***** statment... most of the people here are illiterate dont even ask them to use a computer... I still see people confused by calculators and elevators on a regular basis and I am in a "tech" area.
- narc, on 10/28/2008, -0/+15I know another guy and can confirm.
A few million more answers like mine and we should be able to say that "everyone" uses proxies. - shade45, on 10/28/2008, -3/+17You know, we can all just pretend that we didn't see those opening ceremony's, but the Chinese are very real. we gotta do something... are we just gonna pretend that America is gonna be ok? are we just gonna wait until they have taken over the world?
- Lythia, on 10/28/2008, -0/+14Yes indeed. Now you all can see what my internet looks like. (I'm in China.) I can't access huffingtonpost.com (though I don't miss it). For now, I can access wikipedia, but not from all internet service providers. Some are more blocked than others it seems. Feel fortunate, we really are. But so far living in China has been fun, exciting, and fast-paced though stressful. 6 months in China feels like 1 year in the U.S., time and change comes by faster here. So they are fortunate in ways too, depending on where you live.
- nigeps, on 10/28/2008, -0/+13Wonder how long before there will be an Australian censored internet plugin?
- krispykreams, on 10/28/2008, -0/+13Banned for 15 minutes for clicking what turned out to be a forbidden link? This must be what a shock collar feels like...
- ibone, on 10/28/2008, -0/+11If Americans used if for anything else those things would be taken away.
- j1ggy, on 10/28/2008, -3/+14The one big barrier that we forget to think about is the language barrier. The average citizen may be able to easily access censored information, but whether or not they can read it is a different story.
- laguano, on 10/28/2008, -0/+10I am pretty sure you are mistaking China with Japan. Which seems pretty hard to do.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/27/2008, -3/+13This is a cool way to mess with Chinese traffic monitors in any case, potentially flooding them with controversial search requests and such. Maybe we can help create a cover for real Chinese citizens informing themselves on sensitive topics if this type of technique is taken a step further, in a more decentralized and automated fashion.
- Xinderen, on 10/28/2008, -0/+9Ever been to China? because that certainly ain't the case.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 10/28/2008, -0/+9Until it turns out that you all know the same guy ...
- LeekMibles, on 10/28/2008, -0/+9The only REAL thing that sucks about living here behind the Great(fire)wall is that all porn sites are blocked.
That would really suck if:
1. I didn't have my trusty Gladder plug-in in Firefox and
2. DVD dudes didn't sell porn on every other corner in the city.
DVD dudes are awesome. They chill on the corner with a big ass wagon thing full of DVDs all organized n *****. That's one of the good things about China. You can get high quality copies of movies that have just been released in the states and 360 and PS3 video games for 70 cents. Every foreigner out here has like every game made for 360 and PS3 and 100s, if not 1000's of DVDs.
btw, that article is wrong. You don't really lose the ability to browse for 15 minutes after going to a blocked site. You just get a "connection cannot be established" error. - inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+8check out the source code while you are wearing your tin foil hat.
- craighamnett, on 10/28/2008, -1/+9ROT?
- JYoungest1, on 10/28/2008, -2/+10Your not missing to much from the HuffPo so dont worry.
- Tichondrius74, on 10/28/2008, -1/+8Yea, I love how stupid you are too.
- ElectroStep, on 10/28/2008, -1/+7China has a high rate of English speaking people anyway.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5you will only be ***** over the guys who are nice enough to set up a free proxy service.
- LeekMibles, on 10/28/2008, -1/+6that was a pretty dumb comment...
- hawkspur, on 10/28/2008, -1/+6Large amounts of fail have been detected in this sector.
- inactive, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5I use one of my old computers exclusively as a Tor server running 24/7 in my basement. I haven't got any complaints from my ISP yet :-x
- linuxeventually, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5Can anyone say reverse TOR?
- mitch37, on 10/28/2008, -1/+6Better add the Australian Channel real soon.
- imapluralist, on 10/28/2008, -1/+6I know one too! one more down!
- Rekutyn, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5The article implies that it is being routed through Chinese servers to achieve this effect. While I highly doubt this is the case (it's probably cross-referencing URLs against google.cn), it would be truly tragic if our comedic web browsing resulting in a few black bagging incidents tonight.
- elliott9, on 10/28/2008, -0/+5so i enabled it and was able to look up democracy and freedom on wikipedia. sounds to me like it something isn't working correctly.
- apophenic, on 10/28/2008, -1/+5Thanks dude :D
- mdew, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3is there a Guantanamo Bay extension too?
- Dotcommer, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3DICK. It was shoot anyone in the DICK! Jesus, get it right. -1000 for you.
- Navicerts, on 10/28/2008, -1/+4China probably has more English speaking people total than the US.
- Putman, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3I'm in Shanghai and I don't think I've lost my internet connection after trying to access a censored site. Maybe a few times the connection stopped for 5 seconds, but I can't be sure. That said, it still pretty frustrating. Thank god they finally stopped blocking Wikipedia and Sourceforge. They've recently started blocking the Huffington Post and the Pirate Bay isn't working for me anymore. People who don't understand how important net neutrality should experience this. Having your connection mucked with is no fun.
- spikeless, on 10/28/2008, -2/+5They would probably do a hell of a better job of running America than those fuktards you guys have voted in for the last 9 years. I mean seriously guys, what were you thinking?
- yuutokun, on 10/28/2008, -1/+4我々中国人
- macaca, on 10/28/2008, -0/+3I am scared, once they come to know that I am in US, they will get me killed by WalMart.
- Swipecat, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2It's mostly Chinese language content outside China that's blocked. And the Great Firewall *is* effective. It's OK if you're a visiting foreigner or a foreign business using a proxy tunnel because the authorities don't care about that, but the average Chinese citizen would think twice about drawing possible attention by using a proxy. *Probably* nothing would happen, but there always that uncertainty...
- enkideridu, on 05/15/2009, -0/+2proxies, vpns, those all miss the point.
People who would use those things are very few percentage-wise.
There's no way to completely censor the internet as long as they don't cut off the lines leading overseas and put satelite signal jammers everywhere, but the things they're doing now can effectively prevent most people from even *knowing* there's a firewall, so they won't even think to use proxies.
Why would they bother to use a blocked site like wikipedia if they have a perfectly usable self-censored wikipedia-ish site from baidu?
The people who do know about the things the government hides won't say anything in public unless they have a foreign passport or are looking to go to jail.
For the same reason, this plugin is interesting, but ultimately useless in helping people recognize the internet situation in china, since people who would bother to use this would already have a pretty good idea of what it's like anyway :S
Suggestion: somebody write up a virus that'll automatically install this into every infected computer for a week :] - PookaMan, on 10/28/2008, -0/+24chan is a godsend...if you cant take 4chan, you need to spend more time there. desensitizing is a good thing. it gets rid of a lot of whiny sissy bitches.
- leerayIG88, on 10/28/2008, -0/+2What are these delicious pictures?
